Is the Kandy to Ella train running? (Status checked 17 October 2026)
Not as far as we can verify. News reports checked on 17 October 2026 show no train between Kandy and Ella, and railway.gov.lk has posted no new Upcountry notice since 18 June 2026. Kandy station is still closed to trains because the Peradeniya railway bridge has not been restored, and the Gampola–Nawalapitiya and Hatton–Nanu Oya sections are still under repair. What does run: Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola (since 2 October 2026), and Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla (Colombo Times, 2 October 2026). Trains on that scenic section do not start at Ambewela: from 20 June 2026 they start at Nanu Oya and call at Ambewela (Sri Lanka Railways notice, updated 18 June 2026).
The newly reopened Colombo–Peradeniya section was briefly suspended on 5 October after a landslip caused a derailment, and a second slip blocked the track between Peradeniya and Gelioya that evening (Newswire, 5 October 2026). On 12 October 2026 the Department of Railways started a new daily Polgahawela–Peradeniya train for schoolchildren and other passengers (Ada Derana, 12 October 2026). Repeated slips near Kadigamuwa then disrupted that section: on 14 October an embankment collapsed and the 5.15pm train was stopped at Rambukkana (Daily Mirror, 14 October 2026); the line was blocked for a third time on 16 October (Daily Mirror, 16 October 2026); and another slip caused delays on 17 October at about 5.15am (Daily Mirror, 17 October 2026; Ada Derana, 17 October 2026). On 17 October 2026 the Sri Lanka Railways media notices page still showed nothing newer than 18 June 2026. To confirm on your travel day, call the Sri Lanka Railways 1971 line (the number given in the official reservation FAQ) or ask at the station.
Book a seat in three steps: (1) open the official Sri Lanka Railways seat reservation site, linked from railway.gov.lk; (2) search the section that runs, such as Nanu Oya to Ella, up to 30 days ahead; (3) pay by card or LankaQR and keep the emailed e-ticket. Full rules are in How to book seats.
How to book seats
Booking status, 17 October 2026: no through Kandy–Ella train is running, so you cannot travel that journey now, even though the official reservation FAQ still lists Kandy–Ella among its routes. You can book the sections that run, such as Nanu Oya to Ella, where the system offers them. These rules come from the official reservation FAQ, checked on 17 October 2026.
The official e-ticket route. Book only through the Sri Lanka Railways online seat reservation platform, which is linked from the railway.gov.lk website. Create an account and log in, choose your start station, end station, date and number of passengers, pick a train, then choose the class and pay by card or LankaQR. The e-ticket is emailed to you, and you show it printed or on your phone at the station. No physical ticket is issued.
- Bookings open 30 days before travel and close two hours before departure.
- One booking covers up to five seats, and every passenger's NIC or passport number is required. Tickets are non-transferable.
- Seats are allocated automatically; you cannot choose a seat or a side of the train.
- A 5 per cent convenience fee is added. The seat is confirmed only once payment succeeds.
- To cancel, go to an mTicketing-enabled station: 75 per cent of the ticket fee is refunded more than 168 hours before departure, 50 per cent between 48 and 168 hours, and nothing inside 48 hours, always excluding the service charge. If the train is cancelled, you can request a refund at a station counter, excluding the service charge.
Class choices. The FAQ lists four reservable classes: Observation, air-conditioned saloon, second class and third class. Which ones appear depends on the train and date.
Observation car vs second class. The official pages do not describe or compare the two, so we don't either. Compare the classes and fares the reservation system shows for your train before you pay.
When seats sell out. Sri Lanka Railways publishes no sell-out timing. Its seat reservation guide (PDF) says that if no train appears for your date, all seats allocated for online booking may already be taken, though a few seats may remain at stations with a reservation counter. The FAQ adds that at busy times a seat can go to another passenger if you don't finish paying in time. If you know your date, check as soon as the 30-day window opens.
What is running now, section by section
The Kandy-to-Ella journey uses the Upcountry (Main) Line. Trains from Kandy run back to Peradeniya Junction, then climb through Gampola, Nawalapitiya, Hatton and Nanu Oya to Ella. Every one of those sections has to be open for the journey to work.
| Section | Status on 17 October 2026 (latest report per section) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Colombo Fort – Rambukkana | Running | Colombo Times, 2 Oct 2026 |
| Rambukkana – Peradeniya – Gampola | Reopened 2 October 2026; disrupted by landslips on 5 October; repeated Kadigamuwa slips on 14, 16 and 17 October (embankment collapse on 14 October stopped the 5.15pm train at Rambukkana; the line was blocked for a third time on 16 October; another slip caused delays at about 5.15am on 17 October) | Newswire, 28 Sep 2026; Newswire, 5 Oct 2026; Daily Mirror, 14 Oct 2026; Daily Mirror, 16 Oct 2026; Daily Mirror, 17 Oct 2026; Ada Derana, 17 Oct 2026 |
| Peradeniya – Kandy | Closed until the Peradeniya "Black Bridge" is restored | Colombo Times, 2 Oct 2026 |
| Gampola – Nawalapitiya | Closed; repairs under way | Hiru News, 4 Oct 2026 |
| Nawalapitiya – Hatton | Operating normally (limited services on 9 Sep, per Daily Mirror) | Colombo Times, 2 Oct 2026 |
| Hatton – Nanu Oya | Closed; repairs under way | Colombo Times, 2 Oct 2026 |
| Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla | Running | Sri Lanka Railways notice, 18 Jun 2026; Colombo Times, 2 Oct 2026 |
So the scenic hill running near Ella is back, but it does not yet connect towards Kandy. Re-check close to your travel date, because news reports and status pages can lag what is actually running.
Why the line is closed
Cyclone Ditwah badly damaged the Upcountry line in late 2025. The Railway Department reported that the Rambukkana–Gampola section alone was damaged at 103 locations, including 36 large-scale landslides (Newswire, 28 September 2026). Sri Lanka Railways has been reopening the line in stages since then.
After the 5 October derailment, the National Building Research Organisation said it had approved the restart but that the risk of landslides and falling rocks on the line remains (The Morning, 6 October 2026; Ada Derana, 6 October 2026). The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) is investigating the repeated embankment collapses on the Upcountry railway line (Pulse, 16 October 2026). Expect short-notice suspensions in heavy rain.
When will the Kandy to Ella train reopen?
There is no official reopening date. On 17 October 2026 we re-checked the Sri Lanka Railways media notices. The latest Upcountry notice is still the one from 18 June 2026, which says trains between Badulla and Nanu Oya have resumed. No notice gives a date for trains between Kandy and Ella.
What government officials have said, as reported in the press:
- On 2 October 2026, the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development said work on the Peradeniya Black Bridge was being sped up and that a new railway bridge will be built next to it. He gave no completion date (Newswire, 2 Oct 2026).
- The Department of Railways said about 75 per cent of the Upcountry line was running on 2 October 2026, and that trains to Kandy and Matale should resume once the bridge is restored (Colombo Times, 2 Oct 2026).
The table below lists the target dates engineers have given for each section. None of them is an official notice. Until a Sri Lanka Railways notice appears, plan the Kandy to Nanu Oya leg by road and take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella.
Expected reopening dates, and who said them
| Section | Expected | Who said it, and when |
|---|---|---|
| Peradeniya – Kandy (Black Bridge) | No date announced; work "expedited" | Minister of Transport and Highways, reported by Daily Mirror, 2 Oct 2026 |
| Kandy train service | "By February" if a damaged bridge can be fixed quickly | Superintendent Engineer (Upper) Danushka Dissanayake, reported by The Sunday Times, 4 Oct 2026 |
| Gampola – Nawalapitiya | Expected December 2026 | Upcountry Railway Line Development Project engineers, reported by Hiru News, 4 Oct 2026 |
| Great Western – Nanu Oya, allowing Nawalapitiya–Badulla services | Repairs expected to finish by December 2026 | Restoration engineers, reported by Daily Mirror, 9 Sep 2026 |
| Full Upcountry line | Earlier target of 31 December 2026, itself a revised date | Ministry of Transport official, reported 19 April 2026 (The Morning) |
Treat every date above as an intention, not a confirmed service. An earlier statement that the Peradeniya–Colombo service would resume in October 2026 (Daily Mirror, 10 September 2026) has been met, but that service stops at Peradeniya, not Kandy station, even though headlines called it a Colombo–Kandy service. Only a Sri Lanka Railways notice or a live result in the official reservation system confirms a train for your date.
Colombo to Kandy by train
Trains from Colombo Fort have run to Peradeniya and Gampola since 2 October 2026, but they stop short of Kandy station. Railway officials said a six-kilometre stretch remains blocked because the Peradeniya railway bridge has not been restored (PTI via News18, 2 October 2026). Advance seat reservations are available under the new timetable (Colombo Times, 2 October 2026).
To reach Kandy itself, finish the journey from Peradeniya by road. The getting-around guide explains how to compare the options. Check which reservable trains run on your date in the official seat reservation system, or ask the Sri Lanka Railways 1971 line.
Alternatives if the train isn't running
A road transfer is a valid itinerary decision, not a failed version of the trip. These are the realistic options until the line reopens. Prices and journey times vary with the vehicle, the season and traffic, so we do not publish figures we cannot verify. The Kandy to Ella by road guide compares each option, with the official bus fare.
Road to Nanu Oya, then the train to Ella
This keeps the most scenic rail section. Travel by road from Kandy to Nanu Oya (the station for Nuwara Eliya), then take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella, a section that is running (Colombo Times, 2 October 2026). Book the Nanu Oya–Ella leg through the official reservation system where it is offered (published times are on our Nanu Oya to Ella timetable page), and confirm how you will get from your Nuwara Eliya accommodation to Nanu Oya station.
Bus
Public buses connect Kandy with the hill country. Buses are the cheapest option, but they can be crowded and are hard work with big luggage. Ask at the bus station in Kandy for the current route and departure times on the day, and allow plenty of margin.
Private driver or taxi
A car and driver is the most flexible option and the easiest with luggage. It lets you stop on the way and can be combined with the Nanu Oya–Ella train: the driver drops you at Nanu Oya and meets you, with your luggage, in Ella. Agree the price, the route, the pickup station and what happens if the train is late or cancelled before you set off.
Reservations do not prove operation
A reservable route in the official FAQ shows that the booking system covers that kind of service. It does not prove that the train runs on your date, or that seats remain. The FAQ itself says a "no seats" message can mean no train is running on the selected date. Use the reservation result for your date together with current notices, instead of copying a timetable from an undated travel article.
Timetable, classes and tickets
Timetable. Sri Lanka Railways publishes train times through the "Train Schedule" link on railway.gov.lk and through the official seat reservation system. We do not copy times here, because the Upcountry timetable has changed several times since the cyclone. Search the exact stations and date you need.
Classes. The official reservation FAQ lists four reservable classes: Observation, air-conditioned saloon, second class and third class. Not every train carries every class.
Ticket prices. The Sri Lanka Railways fare table for trips from Colombo Fort (a PDF on railway.gov.lk) gives these standard fares. The file is dated 4 July 2022, so the reservation system's price for your train is the one that counts, and reserved and Observation seats can cost more.
| From Colombo Fort to | Distance | 1st class (LKR) | 2nd class (LKR) | 3rd class (LKR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peradeniya Junction | 114.85 km | 950 | 500 | 240 |
| Kandy | 120.74 km | 950 | 500 | 240 |
| Hatton | 174.91 km | 1,250 | 650 | 320 |
| Nanu Oya | 207.06 km | 1,450 | 750 | 360 |
| Ella | 271.59 km | 1,750 | 900 | 440 |
| Badulla | 292.39 km | 1,800 | 900 | 460 |
Tickets. Book reserved seats online up to 30 days ahead (see How to book seats above), or buy unreserved tickets at the station on the day.
Stations on the line and what is reservable
The official reservation system's station list includes the corridor stations between Kandy and Badulla, among them Peradeniya, Gampola, Nawalapitiya, Nanu Oya, Ohiya, Haputale, Idalgashinna, Diyatalawa, Bandarawela, Ella, Demodara and Badulla. When we last searched the portal on 13 September 2026 it listed no reservable Kandy-to-Ella service. Treat the station list as the system's coverage, not as proof that a given station is served on your date.
The Ella Odyssey tourist train
Sri Lanka Railways promotes the Ella Odyssey, a slow tourist train on this corridor with scenic photo stops, and publishes an official fare notice for it (a PDF in Sinhala) on its website. As of our last check on 13 September 2026, no official English timetable was found and the reservation portal did not list the service, so confirm the current operating days on railway.gov.lk before planning around it, and book through the official reservation portal wherever it is offered.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Kandy to Ella train running?
Not as far as we can verify. News reports checked on 17 October 2026 show no train between Kandy and Ella, and railway.gov.lk has posted no new Upcountry notice since June 2026. Kandy station is closed to trains until the Peradeniya railway bridge is restored, and the Gampola–Nawalapitiya and Hatton–Nanu Oya sections are still under repair. The Nanu Oya–Ella–Badulla section does run.
Why is the Kandy to Ella train closed?
Cyclone Ditwah damaged the Upcountry railway line at many locations in late 2025. Sri Lanka Railways has been reopening it section by section, and the sections between Kandy and Nanu Oya are not all restored yet.
Have Colombo to Kandy train services resumed?
Partly. Since 2 October 2026 trains run from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola, but not into Kandy station, because the Peradeniya railway bridge is still being restored. A landslip caused a derailment and a temporary suspension on 5 October. Repeated Kadigamuwa slips then disrupted the reopened section: an embankment collapse on 14 October stopped the 5.15pm train at Rambukkana; the line was blocked for a third time on 16 October; and another slip caused delays at about 5.15am on 17 October. Check before travelling.
When will the Kandy to Ella train run again?
No official date has been announced. Engineers have said they expect Gampola–Nawalapitiya and the Great Western–Nanu Oya repairs to be completed in December 2026, and a railway engineer said Kandy services could resume by February if a damaged bridge is fixed quickly. These are expectations, not a timetable.
How far in advance can I book Kandy to Ella train tickets?
The official online reservation system opens bookings 30 days before travel and closes them two hours before departure. A route listed in the system does not prove a train is running on your date.
Can I choose which side of the train I sit on?
Not when booking online. The official reservation system allocates seats automatically and does not let you pick a specific seat.
Which classes can I book on the Kandy to Ella line?
The official reservation FAQ lists four reservable classes: Observation, air-conditioned saloon, second class and third class. What is offered depends on the train and date. The official pages do not describe or compare the observation car and second class, so check the classes and fares shown for your train before paying.
When do Kandy to Ella train seats sell out?
Sri Lanka Railways publishes no sell-out timing. Online booking opens 30 days before travel, and its official guide says that if no train is shown, all seats allocated for online booking may already be reserved, though a few may remain at stations with a reservation counter.

How to check your journey
- Check the Sri Lanka Railways media notices for restoration, restriction or timetable updates.
- Search the official reservation service for the exact origin, destination and travel date. A listed route is not the same as available seats.
- Confirm whether the journey is through-running or needs a change or road transfer.
- Call 1971 or ask at the station close to departure, because rain, track work or operational changes can alter the service.
- Keep a road-transfer fallback that still preserves the rest of the itinerary.
Understanding the station names
Travel articles often describe a destination rather than the station actually used. A Nuwara Eliya stay can involve a transfer to or from Nanu Oya, and a "Colombo to Kandy" train currently means Colombo to Peradeniya. Confirm the exact station in the reservation result and the road connection to the accommodation. Do not book a town name, a station name and a driver pickup as though they are the same place.
Ella also needs a complete arrival plan. Decide how you and your luggage reach the accommodation, especially if the train arrives later than expected.
Where the Nine Arch Bridge fits
The Nine Arch Bridge is a separate place visit near Ella, not proof that a particular passenger service will cross at a predictable time for photography. Follow current access and rail-safety instructions. Do not stand on an active railway or rely on a crowd's behaviour as permission.
Plan the route, not just the train
If a rail segment is confirmed, treat it as one transport day and leave room for delay. If it is not, connect Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella by the sections that are running and road transfers, rather than forcing the itinerary to match an assumed through service.
This page still omits journey durations, departure times and ticket prices. All three are operational facts that need confirmation for your actual date.
Recheck timeline
Check official notices while designing the route, again before committing non-refundable bookings, and again close to departure. The correct answer to "is the Kandy to Ella train running?" belongs to the current Sri Lanka Railways result, not to this page's publication date.
