Quick answer: Arugam Bay is a surf beach on Sri Lanka's east coast. Condé Nast Traveller readers voted it the best beach in Asia for 2026, with a score of 98.84. Go between April and October, when the surf is on. From November to April it is the off season, so most beach trips are better on the south coast then.

Why was Arugam Bay voted Asia's best beach?

In the 2026 Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards, Arugam Bay Beach came first in the "Best beaches in Asia" list with a score of 98.84. Railay Beach in Thailand was second (94.44) and Coral Beach on Pangkor Island, Malaysia, was third (93.33). The awards were published on 6 October 2026. Condé Nast Traveller says this is the 29th edition and that the results are based only on votes from its UK readers. Three more Sri Lankan beaches made the Asia top 20: Bentota (9th), Tangalle (14th) and Negombo (19th). Arugam Bay at a glance (checked 16 October 2026). Arugam Bay is a surf and beach bay on Sri Lanka's south-east coast, beside the fishing town of Pottuvil in Ampara District. Sri Lanka Tourism says the surf season starts in April and ends in October, so mid-October is the tail of the season. The driest time to visit is the south-west monsoon, May to September, when Sri Lanka Tourism names Arugam Bay as a place to explore. From December to February the north-east monsoon brings rain to the east, so this is not a winter beach stop. For October to December 2026 the Department of Meteorology expects above-normal rainfall in most parts of the country.

Where is Arugam Bay?

The bay is in Ampara District, in the Eastern Province. The Ministry of Justice's list of divisional secretariat divisions (PDF) places Pottuvil (spelled Pothuvil) in Ampara District, and Pottuvil is the town the bay depends on. Sri Lanka Tourism places the bay 320 km due east of Colombo. That is a straight line, not the road distance. Trincomalee and Batticaloa are separate bases further north on the same east coast.

Sri Lanka Tourism describes a wide white beach, clear water and a fishing community, and calls the bay at its best at sunrise, when the night boats come in. It lists surfing, sea bathing, photography and sightseeing as the things to do.

Which Arugam Bay surf spots suit your level?

Sri Lanka Tourism says there are four main surf points and names Arugam Point, Crocodile Rock, Pottuvil Point and Peanut Farm (two separate breaks, one north and one south of the bay). It does not grade breaks by level. The levels below come from two surf guides written by operators in the area (Go Asia, updated March 2026, and Surf and Stays, updated June 2026). Treat them as a starting point and ask a local surf school on the day.

Sri Lanka Tourism says Pottuvil Point can give 800 metre rides from the outside section to the beach, that the surf builds through the day, and that surfers should be on the beach by ten in the morning. The drive to Peanut Farm goes through a forest where elephants live; Sri Lanka Tourism puts it at nearly 20 minutes through the forest. Surf and Stays says Whiskey Point has been less consistent in recent years, so check current reports before you book a stay there for the wave.

All the main breaks are right-handers, according to the surf guides. Use the surfing guide to match a break to your ability, and see the south coast comparison if you are travelling outside the east's season. Sri Lanka Tourism says that when the Arugam Bay season ends, the season begins on the south coast at Hikkaduwa, Wewala and Narigama.

What are the best months to visit Arugam Bay?

The official statistical abstract and Sri Lanka Tourism's weather page divide the year into four seasons:

• May to September (south-west monsoon). Rain falls mostly on the south-west of the island. Sri Lanka Tourism names Arugam Bay, Trincomalee and Jaffna as dry-zone places to explore in this season. This is the core of the surf season.
• October and November (second inter-monsoon). Showers can fall anywhere, often in the afternoon or evening. Sri Lanka Tourism says seas can be rough. The statistical abstract calls this the rainiest period for the island as a whole. The surf season ends in October.
• December to February (north-east monsoon). Rain comes to the eastern half of the island. This is the south-west coast's peak season instead.
• March and April (first inter-monsoon). Warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Sri Lanka Tourism's surf season opens in April.

A season name does not tell you whether the sea is safe on a given day. Check the Department of Meteorology forecast close to your dates, and use the best time to visit guide to fit this coast into a wider route.

What is Arugam Bay like in the off season (November to April)?

Quick answer: November to March is Arugam Bay's off season, and April is when the surf season opens again. Sri Lanka Tourism ends the surf season in October, and the north-east monsoon brings rain to the east from December to February. If you are in Sri Lanka in these months, base your beach days on the south coast and come to Arugam Bay between April and October.

What is the weather like?

The rain builds through the end of the year. These are the Department of Meteorology's district averages for Ampara, where the bay is:

The Met Department's seasonal outlook, issued on 2 October 2026, expects slightly above-normal rain in October, above-normal rain in November and slightly above-normal rain in December 2026 across most of the country.

What is open in the off season?

We found no official list of which guesthouses, cafes and surf schools stay open between November and March. Email or message your guesthouse before you book, and ask whether the places around it are open on your dates too. Transport still runs by road, as described in the getting there section below, but confirm your bus or driver ahead.

Can you surf Arugam Bay in the off season?

Sri Lanka Tourism gives the surf season as April to October, so it does not point surfers to the bay from November to March. Waves and wind change day to day, so a single good day is possible, but do not plan a surf trip around it. If you do paddle out, check a current surf report, ask a local surf school, and remember that rip currents are a real risk on this coast.

Where should you surf instead?

Sri Lanka Tourism says that as the Arugam Bay season ends, the surf season begins on the south coast at Hikkaduwa, Wewala and Narigama. Use the surfing guide to match a break to your level, and the south coast guide to pick a beach town such as Hikkaduwa, Mirissa or Hiriketiya. Is Arugam Bay worth visiting in December?

Not for a beach or surf trip. December is in the north-east monsoon, and Ampara averages 326.7 mm of December rain. Spend Christmas on the south or west coast, using our Sri Lanka in December guide, and keep Arugam Bay for a trip between April and October.

How do you get to Arugam Bay?

There is no railway to Arugam Bay. You arrive by road, by bus or hired car.

• From Ella and the hill country. The road route listed in the official Kumana National Park profile runs through Wellawaya, Monaragala, Siyambalanduwa and Lahugala to Pottuvil. From Ella, you drop to Wellawaya and join that road. Arugam Bay is beside Pottuvil. The Kandy to Ella by road guide covers the leg before Ella.
• From Colombo. The same official profile lists the long road from Colombo through Ratnapura, Udawalawe, Wellawaya and Monaragala to Pottuvil. It is a full day's transfer. Sri Lanka Tourism's 320 km figure is a straight line, so the road is longer.
• By air. Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo is the main international arrival point. There is no airport at Arugam Bay. Domestic flights to the east coast change by season, so check with the airline before planning around one. Where should you stay in Arugam Bay?

No accommodation is recommended or paid for here. These are the areas people choose between:

• The main bay strip. Guesthouses, restaurants and surf schools line the main road behind the beach, between Main Point and the beginner break at Baby Point. Stay here to walk to the surf and to food.
• Whiskey Point. About 4 km north, with surf camps on the point. It feels quieter than the main bay. Stay here if you want that wave and a slower pace, after checking current surf reports.
• Pottuvil town. The local town a short way north, with shops and local services. Better for transport links than for beach life.
• South towards Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock. More remote, reached through forest. Good for quiet and early surf, but you will need transport for food and supplies. In August 2026 the tourism minister announced plans to develop the Elephant Rock area with roads, electricity, water and sanitation, so expect change there.

Most stays are short-term guesthouses and surf camps. The how many days guide helps decide how many nights the transfer justifies. As a rule, one night does not earn the road day.

Is Arugam Bay safe?

• Rip currents and strong waves. Sri Lanka Tourism warns that the waves can be too strong for an amateur. Rip currents kill surfers on Sri Lanka's coasts: in August 2026 a 21-year-old tourist died after a rip took him off Weligama on the south coast. Do not assume a lifeguard is on duty. Swim near other people, take lessons from an established surf school, and stay out when the sea is rough.
• Dress. Pottuvil and Arugam Bay are mainly Muslim and Tamil communities. Fact-checkers found in 2025 that there is no "no bikini" rule on the beach, but locals ask that swimwear stays on the beach and in the sea. In July 2025 police arrested a tourist for walking half-naked between hotels. Cover your shoulders and legs on the road and in shops. • Security. In March 2026 the Daily Mirror reported that police and the Special Task Force had put a 24-hour security plan in place in the Arugam Bay tourist zone. Check your government's travel advice before you go.
• Wildlife on the road. Elephants live in the forest on the way to Peanut Farm and around Lahugala. Avoid driving at night and keep your distance.

What trips can you take near Arugam Bay?

Kumana National Park. Kumana is a national park managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, in Ampara and Monaragala districts. The government's park profile says it covers 35,665 hectares, is also known as Yala East, and is known for birds and wetlands. The entrance is at Panama, south of Pottuvil, and the park office is 22 km from Panama. Its mangrove swamp is the main feature, and birds nest there in May. You need a permit and must pay the prescribed fee. The Department's online permit service shows how many permits remain for a date. Lahugala Kitulana National Park. One of Sri Lanka's smallest national parks, 15.54 square km, managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Okanda. Sri Lanka Tourism puts Okanda Beach 28 km from Arugam Bay, reached by a jungle road. It describes Okanda as a point break with about three line-ups: the front two for intermediate surfers and the last for experienced surfers, with rocky cliffs beside the waves that make it risky for beginners. Sri Lanka Tourism calls the Okanda and Kudumbigala area the country's first Heritage Conservation Zone, a sacred grove where traditional laws take precedence, held sacred by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Magul Maha Viharaya. An ancient temple complex at Lahugala, inside the Lahugala Kitulana forest reserve. Sri Lanka Tourism says it was built to mark the marriage of King Kavantissa of Rohana to the daughter of King Kelanitissa in the 2nd century BC, and describes a 200-acre archaeological site with three courtyards, ponds and granaries. The Central Cultural Fund's ticket list, checked on 14 October 2026, includes a "Lahugala (Ampara)" site at USD 3 (LKR 1,008 at that day's rate), or USD 1.50 (LKR 504) for a half ticket. The list does not name the monument, so ask at the site which ticket applies. Dress as for any Buddhist temple.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya. An ancient Buddhist site by the sea near Pottuvil. It is a religious site, so dress modestly. See visiting sacred sites.

Arugam Bay or Trincomalee?

Choose Arugam Bay for surf and a south-east beach stay between April and October. Choose Trincomalee for the harbour city, marine trips and Koneswaram Temple. Batticaloa sits between them. Combining all three needs transfer days. The east coast itinerary gives the bay its own days.
