Haputale

A small ridge-top tea town in Uva Province, on the running Nanu Oya to Ella railway. Known for Lipton's Seat, Adisham Bungalow and the Haputale Gap. Driest from June to August; wettest in October and November.

Is Haputale worth visiting?

Quick answer: Yes, for quiet tea-country views on the hill railway. Haputale is a small ridge town in Uva Province, about one hour by train before Ella. Go for Lipton's Seat at sunrise, Adisham Bungalow and the Haputale Gap. The trains from Nanu Oya and Ella are running, and June to August is the driest time to visit.

Haputale is good for a slower stop between Nuwara Eliya and Ella. It has fewer cafes and guesthouses than Ella, so it suits travellers who want views and walks more than nightlife. It is also a real station on the hill railway, which makes it one of the easiest tea towns to reach without a car while the line west of Nanu Oya is closed.

Where is Haputale?

Haputale is in Badulla District, in Uva Province. It sits on a ridge at the southern edge of the hill country, and the Uva Province tourism site describes the Haputale Gap nearby at about 1,400 m above sea level, with long views over the lowlands (Visit Uva, Haputale Gap).

On the railway, Haputale station is 247.97 km from Colombo Fort, between Idalgashinna and Diyatalawa (Sri Lanka Railways fare table). By road, on an OpenStreetMap route we checked on 19 October 2026 (car, no traffic):

From Haputale toRoad distanceDrive time, no traffic
Adisham Bungalow3.3 kmabout 6 min
Bandarawela10.4 kmabout 13 min
Lipton's Seat15.4 kmabout 29 min
Ella21.9 kmabout 26 min
Nuwara Eliya46.3 kmabout 57 min

Hill roads are narrow and slow, so allow more time than these figures, especially in rain.

How do you get to Haputale by train?

By the running hill section only. As of 19 October 2026, the line from Nanu Oya through Haputale to Ella and Badulla is running, but no train runs from Kandy or Colombo to Nanu Oya. Our Nanu Oya to Ella train guide tracks that status, and the Kandy to Ella train guide explains which sections are still closed.

These are Haputale's times in the Sri Lanka Railways notice in force from 20 June 2026, which we re-read on 19 October 2026 (SLR notice, PDF):

Seats. The notice says these trains carry first-class (air-conditioned) and second-class reserved seats, bookable on the official reservation site from 30 days ahead. The reservation FAQ says you pay the fare for the train's full booked section even if you get on or off at a station in between, such as Bandarawela (SLR reservation FAQ). Our train booking guide has the full steps.

Ella Odyssey fares. The railway's Ella Odyssey fare sheet lists reserved seats from Nanu Oya to Ella at LKR 3,000 in first class, LKR 2,000 in second and LKR 1,500 in third (SLR, PDF). The sheet is undated, so check the price shown when you book.

What can you do in Haputale?

The Uva Province tourism site names these as the main sights. We could not find an official ticket price for Lipton's Seat or Adisham on 19 October 2026, so ask locally before you go.

Lipton's Seat tips from the Uva tourism site: go early to catch the sunrise and avoid the afternoon mist, bring water, snacks and a jacket because it gets chilly at the top, and think about hiring a local guide (Visit Uva). The walk up passes working tea estates, so stay on the road and don't pick leaves.

Waterfalls. The Uva site also recommends Diyaluma Falls and Bambarakanda Falls as trips from Haputale. Both need a vehicle, and after heavy rain the paths are slippery, so check the landslide warning first.

What is the weather like in Haputale?

Haputale has no WMO station, so we use Bandarawela, about 10 km away by road and 1,226 m above sea level. Haputale is a little higher, so expect it to be slightly cooler and mistier. These are the 1991 to 2020 WMO climate normals (NOAA archive of WMO normals):

What this means: June to August is the driest stretch here, the same months when Colombo and Galle are wet on the same 30-year normals. October and November are the wettest, with rain on most days. The Uva site adds that Haputale stays cool all year, with a slight dip in December and January.

Is it safe to travel to Haputale now? (Checked 19 October 2026)

On 18 October 2026, the NBRI's landslide warning valid from 6 pm that day to 6 pm on 19 October put the Haputale Divisional Secretariat Division at Level 1 (Yellow), along with Haldumulla and Passara in Badulla District (landslide early warning, 18 October 2026). Level 1 is the lowest of three levels. It still means you should avoid steep paths and road cuts after heavy rain, and check the newest warning the night before a road day. Our Kandy to Ella by road guide explains how to read these warnings.

How do you get to Haputale from Kandy or Colombo?

By road to Nanu Oya, then the train, or by road all the way. As of 19 October 2026 there is no train from Kandy or Colombo to Nanu Oya. The Nanu Oya to Nuwara Eliya transfer guide explains the short road link to the station if you stay in Nuwara Eliya the night before.

The old Colombo Fort fare table lists Haputale at LKR 1,600 in first class, LKR 800 in second and LKR 400 in third. That table is dated July 2022 and covers the whole line from Colombo, which is not running through right now, so treat it as a reference only.
