Arugam Bay to Yala: how to get there

Arugam Bay to Yala's Palatupana side is a long road day via Tissamaharama. Kumana (Yala East) is much closer, entered from Panama. OSRM times, NTC notes, no invented jeep fares. Checked 23 October 2026.

How do you get from Arugam Bay to Yala?

Quick answer: Decide which park you mean. Kumana (Yala East) is a short road south of Arugam Bay, entered from Panama. Yala National Park on the Palatupana side is a much longer road via Tissamaharama. There is no train. This page quotes OpenStreetMap times, not jeep prices.

Kumana (Yala East) or Yala from Tissamaharama?

Do not treat "Yala" as one gate.

Kumana National Park is managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. The government's park profile says it covers 35,665 hectares, is also known as Yala East, and is known for birds and wetlands. The entrance is at Panama, south of Pottuvil, and the park office is 22 km from Panama. You need a permit and must pay the prescribed fee. The ePermit portal shows remaining permits for a date.

Yala's Palatupana side, the blocks most visitors mean when they search "Yala safari", is reached from Tissamaharama in the deep south, not from Panama. Our Yala page holds opening, bungalow and permit facts. This page does not change that title or meta.

If you are choosing parks rather than roads, use Udawalawe vs Yala and national parks compared.

How far is each option from Arugam Bay?

OpenStreetMap driving routes, with no traffic, checked 23 October 2026:

FromToDistanceTime with no traffic
Arugam BayPanama (Kumana approach)18 km38 min
Arugam BayTissamaharama154 km2 h 48 min
Arugam BayPalatupana (Yala side)167 km3 h 10 min

Tissamaharama is about 16 km from Palatupana on the routing used on our Tissamaharama page (checked 21 October 2026). A Yala drive from Arugam Bay without an overnight in Tissa is a long day on both sides of the park.

Real journeys take longer than OSRM times. The Panama road is a jungle road in Sri Lanka Tourism's Okanda notes; elephants use forest on the way to Peanut Farm and around Lahugala. Avoid night driving.

Is there a bus or a train?

There is no railway to Arugam Bay, and Tissamaharama has no station.

The NTC inter-provincial fare table effective 6 July 2026 (re-read on 24 October 2026) lists Pottuvil as an end point on two routes only, 98-4 from Colombo and 4/86-10 from Kalpitiya, and does not name Arugam Bay, Palatupana or Yala. This page therefore does not invent a bus fare for Arugam Bay to Yala or Kumana. Ask at Pottuvil or Tissamaharama for a service toward Kataragama or Tissa, and confirm the fare with the conductor. Search the NTC fare pages by named towns, not by park gates. The same table does list Panama, the Kumana entrance, as an end point: 98-8 from Colombo (Rs 1,525 normal, Rs 2,288 semi-luxury, Rs 2,913 air-conditioned) and 303-1 from Monaragala (Rs 398 normal). Neither starts in Arugam Bay or Pottuvil.

A hired car is the usual way to combine the bay, Panama and Tissa on your own timetable. There is no official private-car tariff, so get a written quote. The getting-around guide lists what that quote should include.

Why this page quotes no jeep price

Safari jeeps and the park permit are separate. The DWC says visitors enter national parks under a permit and prescribed conditions. Day-visitor permits are applied for on the ePermit portal. The department does not publish a standing public price list on the pages we opened, so confirm the amount in the portal for your date and group.

No official DWC or NTC tariff for hiring a jeep as a transfer from Arugam Bay to Yala was found on 23 October 2026. This page does not invent one. Ask the operator which entrance and block they use, and show the permit receipt at the gate.

Is Yala open, and can you book bungalows?

Blocks 1 and 2 were scheduled to reopen from 6 am on 16 October 2026, per the Department of Wildlife Conservation on 13 October, as reported on our Yala National Park page. We have not found a 16 October source confirming that the gates opened. Reservations for in-park bungalows and campsites open from 1 November 2026. Confirm with the DWC before you pay.

Kumana's opening on your date is a separate check on the same ePermit portal. Do not assume both parks share one closure calendar.

Which overnight makes sense?

  • Stay at Arugam Bay for a Kumana morning from Panama, then surf in the afternoon in season (April to October on Sri Lanka Tourism's Arugam calendar).
  • Stay in Tissamaharama for a Palatupana Yala drive. The Tissamaharama guide has road times to Palatupana, Kataragama and Mattala.
  • Do not stack a Palatupana safari and a same-day return to Arugam Bay unless you accept a very long road day.

Heading to Ella instead? Arugam Bay to Ella covers that transfer.
