Arugam Bay to Ella: how to get there
Arugam Bay to Ella is a road transfer of about 133 km. Bus, tuk-tuk and private car options, OpenStreetMap times, dated NTC notes, and why there is no train. Checked 23 October 2026.

How do you get from Arugam Bay to Ella?
Quick answer: Go by road. There is no railway to Arugam Bay. On 23 October 2026 the OpenStreetMap route from the bay to Ella town was about 133 km and 2 hours 29 minutes with no traffic. A hired car is the simplest option with luggage. The official fare table lists a Colombo to Pottuvil bus (route 98-4), but it has no Pottuvil to Ella row and does not name Arugam Bay.
How far is Arugam Bay from Ella?
These are OpenStreetMap driving routes, with no traffic, checked 23 October 2026:
| From | To | Distance | Time with no traffic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arugam Bay | Ella town | 133 km | 2 h 29 min |
| Pottuvil | Ella town | 129 km | 2 h 23 min |
The bay sits beside Pottuvil. Pickup points on the main strip add a few kilometres. Afternoon rain and hill roads below Ella stretch the day, so leave early.
Coming the other way, from Ella down to the east, is the same road. The Arugam Bay destination page covers seasons and surf; this page is the transfer.
Is there a train from Arugam Bay to Ella?
No. There is no railway to Arugam Bay or Pottuvil. Ella is on the Main Line in the hills. The government's Kumana National Park profile lists the road into the area through Wellawaya, Monaragala, Siyambalanduwa and Lahugala to Pottuvil.
Do not plan a rail shortcut. Before any hill-country rail leg on another day, check our Kandy to Ella train status and Nanu Oya to Ella train guide. Those pages do not make Arugam reachable by train.
Can you take a bus from Arugam Bay to Ella?
The NTC inter-provincial fare table, effective 6 July 2026 (re-read on 24 October 2026), names routes to Ampara, Monaragala, Badulla and Kataragama. It lists Pottuvil as an end point on two routes only, 98-4 from Colombo and 4/86-10 from Kalpitiya. It has no Pottuvil to Ella row and does not name Arugam Bay, so this page does not invent a Pottuvil-to-Ella ticket price.
What you can do on the day:
- Search the NTC fare pages and NTC timetable for Wellawaya, Monaragala, Badulla or Ampara.
- Ask at Pottuvil, Monaragala or Wellawaya whether a departure goes through Ella, or whether you change.
- Confirm the fare with the conductor. The table's end-to-end prices are not the price for a shorter hop unless the conductor says so.
Related NTC end-to-end fares already published from the same July 2026 table, useful only as context, not as this route's ticket:
| NTC route | Named ends | Fare on the 6 July 2026 table |
|---|---|---|
| 21 | Kandy to Badulla | Rs 590 normal, Rs 885 semi-luxury |
| 31-2 | Matara to Badulla | Rs 989 |
| 98-4 | Colombo to Pottuvil | Rs 1,450 normal, Rs 2,175 semi-luxury. Pottuvil is the town beside the bay; see Arugam Bay to Colombo |
Ella sits between the coast and Badulla on other corridors. That does not prove a through bus from Pottuvil. For the south-coast approach to Ella, use Mirissa to Ella transport.
Is a car, a tuk-tuk or the bus best?
| Option | Best for | Official price | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hired car with driver | Luggage, families, stops at Wellawaya | None; private quote | Pickup at the bay, drop-off in Ella, luggage, stops, payment |
| Public bus, with a change if needed | Low budget, light bags | NTC table does not name this pair of towns | Whether it stops in Ella; bags; departure time |
| Tuk-tuk for the whole run | Short hops around the bay, not the hill climb | No official tariff | Only take it if the driver agrees the full distance in writing |
| Overnight in Wellawaya | A gentler day in the wet months | See Wellawaya | Adds a night |
This page does not publish a tuk-tuk or private-car price because no official tariff for Arugam Bay to Ella was on the NTC table or any other official source we opened on 23 October 2026.
What is the road, and where can you stop?
The official Kumana profile's road into Pottuvil is the planning spine: Wellawaya, Monaragala, Siyambalanduwa, Lahugala, then Pottuvil and the bay.
Wellawaya sits at the foot of the Ella climb and is the usual place to break the drive. From Ella it is about 27 km down to Wellawaya on the OpenStreetMap routing used in our south-coast-to-Ella guide. Lahugala Kitulana National Park sits on the Monaragala to Pottuvil road; elephants use that corridor, so avoid driving it at night.
If you want a safari instead of, or before, Ella, see Arugam Bay to Yala. Kumana (Yala East) is much closer to the bay than Yala's Palatupana side.
Rain and hill-country caution (23 October 2026)
The Ella end of this road is hill country. On the evening of 22 October 2026, the Disaster Management Centre asked travellers to reconsider planned trips to the central hills and other rain-affected areas, and to check road and weather updates on 117 before travelling (Daily Mirror). Ada Derana reported landslide early warnings the same day for parts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Badulla, Kegalle, Kurunegala and Monaragala (Ada Derana).
The Department of Meteorology's forecast for 23 October 2026, issued at 5.30 a.m. that day, said the nearby low-pressure area was moving west away from the island but that its influence may persist, with showers or thundershowers at times in Central Province among others, and mist in Central and Uva provinces in the early morning (Met forecast, PDF). This page does not claim that the Arugam Bay to Ella road is closed.
Check 117 and the newest Met and landslide bulletins before you set out. Island-wide October context is on Sri Lanka in October.
What should you sort out before you leave the bay?
- Agree the car the day before, in writing: pickup on the Arugam strip or in Pottuvil, drop-off in Ella, luggage, stops and payment.
- Leave early. OSRM times assume no traffic. Hill roads and rain add hours.
- Carry cash for bus fares and snacks. Do not assume a card machine on the road.
- Plan the next leg. Ella to the south coast is a separate road day: south coast to Ella. For general tools, use getting around Sri Lanka.
Break the drive (26 October 2026): Buttala is about 90 km from Arugam Bay and 44 km from Ella by road, with the Maligawila Buddha 17 km away. Road times from the bay to other towns are on the Arugam Bay page.
