Can you fly direct from Europe to Sri Lanka?

Quick answer: From a few cities, yes. SriLankan Airlines sells Paris and Frankfurt to Colombo, and Edelweiss flies seasonally from Zurich. From most other cities you change once in the Gulf, and on 20 October 2026 airline pages showed economy round trips from about EUR 566. German, French, Dutch, Swiss and Russian citizens all get a free 30-day tourist ETA.

Which European cities have flights to Colombo?

This table shows what each airline's own page said on 20 October 2026. "One stop" means you change planes once.

SriLankan's fare pages do not say how many times a week each route runs, so we do not give a weekly count. Gulf and Istanbul airlines also sell one-stop routes from many more European cities. Their pages would not load for us today, so check them yourself.

How much do flights from Europe cost by month?

These are the lowest economy round-trip fares each page showed for each month, read on 20 October 2026. They are samples, not quotes.

What this tells you: the one-stop Etihad fares were EUR 71 to 233 lower than SriLankan's on the same month from Paris and Frankfurt. November and December were among the cheapest months on most of these pages. December to March is also the main dry season on the south and west coasts, so a winter trip gets both a fair price and good beach weather. February and March were the dearest months from Amsterdam.

A lower fare can mean a long layover. Compare the total journey time and the baggage allowance as well as the price.

How much baggage can you take?

SriLankan Airlines' baggage page gave these allowances on 20 October 2026 for routes outside the Americas, which covers every European route:

The airline says allowances can change by period, routing and fare type, so the figure on your ticket is the one that counts. Gulf airlines set their own rules by fare type. If you connect between two airlines on separate tickets, you may need to collect and recheck your bags.

Do Europeans need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Everyone needs an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival. The official ETA site says that from 25 May 2026, citizens of 40 countries get a free 30-day tourist ETA, with double entry within the 30 days. We checked the list for the countries on this page on 20 October 2026:

Children under 12 of any nationality also get a free ETA for up to 30 days. If your passport is not on the list, the same site lists a fee of USD 50 for a tourist ETA applied for online, or USD 60 on arrival. Apply only on eta.gov.lk. Our Sri Lanka visa guide lists the lookalike websites to avoid.

What is the time difference with Europe?

Sri Lanka is on UTC+5:30 all year and never changes its clocks. Most of Europe does, so the gap changes twice a year.

Etihad's Paris page also gave the 3 hour 30 minute gap on 20 October 2026. Plan a short first day, because a long flight and the time change add up.

What about flights from Russia?

SriLankan Airlines' route map does not list Moscow. On 20 October 2026, Etihad's Moscow page sold Sheremetyevo to Colombo via Abu Dhabi, from EUR 693 for November. Russian tour operators also sell winter charter seats. How should you plan the trip from Europe?

Money tip: on 19 October 2026 the Central Bank of Sri Lanka's buying rate was LKR 365.62 for one euro and LKR 393.50 for one Swiss franc (CBSL exchange rates). Use it to check the rate you are offered at the airport.
