Colombo Airport to Galle and Mirissa

From Bandaranaike International Airport to Galle, Mirissa and the south coast by expressway bus or private car. Official NTC expressway bus fares checked 15 October 2026.

For Mirissa, take an expressway bus toward Matara (NTC EX01/EX03 from Negombo at Rs 1,590, or EX 1-18 from Colombo at Rs 1,320) and a short local ride west, or a private car on the expressways. The NTC does not list a southbound bus from the airport terminal, and its fare table does not give journey times. Fares are from the NTC Expressway Full Fare table, effective from 00:01 on 6 July 2026, re-read 15 October 2026.

How do you get from Colombo airport to Galle or Mirissa? (Checked 15 October 2026)

The quickest way is a private car or taxi on the expressways. The cheapest is an air-conditioned expressway bus. The National Transport Commission (NTC) does not list a bus that starts at the airport terminal for the south, but its expressway table has buses to Galle and Matara from Negombo, Makumbura and Colombo. Mirissa sits between Galle and Matara on the coast, so Matara buses are the ones to use for Mirissa.

Fares are the NTC's full adult fares for luxury expressway services. Timings are not in the table; check the NTC timetable page or ask at the bus stand.

Which route should you pick from the airport?

  • Arriving late or with lots of luggage: a car on the expressways. Agree the fare before you leave, at the airport taxi counter or in a ride app.
  • On a budget and arriving in daylight: get to Negombo, then take a Negombo to Galle or Negombo to Matara expressway bus. That avoids crossing Colombo.
  • Already in Colombo: the Colombo to Matara expressway bus, or a coast-line train from Colombo Fort if you want the slow sea views. Read getting around Sri Lanka before you choose.

Is Galle or Mirissa the better first stop?

Galle is the nearer of the two and suits a first night if you land in the afternoon. Mirissa is further east, so it works better if you land early or want to be on a whale-watching boat soon. The south coast guide compares every beach town if you have not chosen yet, and the south coast itinerary lays out 5, 7 and 10 day routes.

How do you get from Matara to Mirissa?

Mirissa is west of Matara on the coast road. Expressway buses end in Matara, so finish with a local bus or a tuk-tuk. Agree a tuk-tuk fare before you set off; we do not quote one because there is no official tariff.

What about Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna and Weligama?

The NTC table does not list expressway buses to these towns by name. For Unawatuna, take a Galle bus and continue a short way east. For Weligama, take a Matara bus or continue from Galle. For Hikkaduwa, the coast line or the coast road from Colombo is usually more direct than the expressway.

Can you use the airport-to-Kandy tricks here?

Partly. The airport's route 187 bus to Colombo is covered in our Colombo airport to Kandy guide. From Colombo you continue south rather than east. Still deciding between coasts? Read east coast vs south coast first: October to December is south coast season.

Do you need mobile data for the drive south?

A working phone helps you contact your driver and follow the route. Our best eSIM for tourists in Sri Lanka comparison lists dated prices from Dialog, SLT-Mobitel and international eSIM providers.
