Colombo Airport to Anuradhapura
Colombo airport to Anuradhapura distance: 169 to 182 km on two road samples, the airport's fixed-fare card rate of Rs 30,240, and two bus plans from NTC fares. Checked 28 October 2026.

How far is Anuradhapura from Colombo airport? (Checked 28 October 2026)
Quick answer: About 169 to 182 km by road, and 3 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours 27 minutes with no traffic, on the two OpenStreetMap routes we sampled on 28 October 2026. The airport's fixed-fare card, read the same day, lists ANURADHAPURA at Rs 30,240 for the air-conditioned taxi. The cheapest bus plan we can source is two buses through Kurunegala, at Rs 921 on normal fares by our sum of two official tables. Going through Colombo Fort costs more, at Rs 1,186.
Anuradhapura is one of the first stops many visitors choose for the Cultural Triangle. Our Anuradhapura destination page explains why people go. This page is only about getting there from the airport.
| Option | Price | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport taxi counter, air-conditioned (ANURADHAPURA) | Rs 30,240 | About 3 h 20 min to 3 h 27 min with no traffic (our OSRM samples) | Airport Taxi Service page |
| Bus 5/245 to Kurunegala, then bus 15-17 to Anuradhapura | Rs 331 plus Rs 590, normal | Not listed in the tables | NTC fare table |
| Bus 187 to Colombo Fort, then route 4-3 | Rs 325 plus Rs 861 normal, Rs 1,292 semi-luxury, Rs 1,651 air-conditioned luxury | Not listed in the tables | Airport luxury bus page and NTC fare table |
| Uber or PickMe | Shown in the app | Check in the app | Airport transport page |
What do the two road routes look like?
| Sample | Distance | Time with no traffic | Roads named by the map |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 1 | 182.3 km | About 3 h 20 min | A3 from Negombo up the coast to Puttalam (about 94 km), then the A12 to Anuradhapura (about 67 km) |
| Route 2 | 169.0 km | About 3 h 27 min | Back roads from Negombo to Kurunegala, then the A28 to Anuradhapura (about 80 km) |
Route 1 is 13 km longer but 7 minutes quicker. The map makes it the better choice on the numbers, although a no-traffic model cannot show the many towns on a coast road. Route 2 is shorter but slower, and it goes through Kurunegala. The two routes go through different districts: route 1 stays near the west coast through Puttalam district, and route 2 goes inland.
For other trips from the airport, our Colombo airport to Sigiriya guide covers the next stop in the Cultural Triangle, and our airport to Kandy guide covers the hill road.
What does the airport taxi card say about Anuradhapura?
On the AASL fixed-fare card, as read on 28 October 2026, ANURADHAPURA is Rs 30,240 for the air-conditioned taxi. The card shows no last-updated date, does not say how many passengers or bags a rate covers, and does not say if expressway tolls are included. The airport page adds two charges: Rs 130 for each extra kilometre beyond the destination you asked for, and Rs 300 for each extra drop within the agreed journey.
The card has lines for several places on or near the way, so you can see how the rate rises with distance.
| Card line | Rate (air-conditioned) |
|---|---|
| CHILAW | Rs 11,340 |
| KURUNEGALA | Rs 15,444 |
| PUTTALAM | Rs 20,520 |
| DAMBULLA | Rs 24,192 |
| HABARANA | Rs 27,000 |
| SIGIRIYA | Rs 28,188 |
| ANURADHAPURA | Rs 30,240 |
| MIHINTHALE | Rs 33,372 |
| POLONNARUWA | Rs 34,020 |
On our route 1 distance, Rs 30,240 over 182.3 km is about Rs 166 for each kilometre. That is our arithmetic, not a rate the airport publishes. The card does not say if a rate is for the whole car or per passenger, so confirm that with the counter before you pay. MIHINTHALE is also a line on the card, at Rs 33,372, which is Rs 3,132 more than Anuradhapura. Our Mihintale page explains the site.
How do you get from the airport to Anuradhapura by bus?
The airport lists bus 187 to Colombo Fort (Rs 325 a person, about 50 minutes, 24 hours a day, boarding at the Departure Terminal Outer Porch). That route goes the wrong way, since Colombo is south of the airport and Anuradhapura is north. The NTC table has a better choice. It lists a Katunayake to Kurunegala bus, route 5/245, and a Kurunegala to Anuradhapura bus, route 15-17.
| Plan | Legs | Normal fare | Our sum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Through Kurunegala | 5/245 (Rs 331) then 15-17 (Rs 590) | Normal only in the table | Rs 921 |
| Through Colombo Fort | 187 (Rs 325) then 4-3 (Rs 861) | Semi-luxury Rs 1,292 and air-conditioned luxury Rs 1,651 on route 4-3 | Rs 1,186 normal |
The sums are ours. The table lists route ends only, with no stops and no times. We found no official timetable and no seat reservation source for either leg. The Kurunegala plan costs Rs 265 less than the Colombo plan on normal fares, and it avoids the trip into the city. Its risk is the change at Kurunegala: the tables give no waiting time and no stand, so ask a conductor where the next bus leaves. If you land late, the Colombo plan may be the one to try, since bus 187 runs 24 hours a day on the airport's own page.
Route 15-17 shows a normal fare only. A bus with a higher fare class on that route is not listed in the table.
Should you stay near the airport first?
If you land in the morning with energy, the taxi gets you to the ancient city in the afternoon of the same day. If you land at night, a first night closer to the airport is easier on everyone. Our Negombo destination page covers the closest beach town. Our Colombo airport arrival guide covers the airport itself.
| If this is you | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You land in the morning | Taxi straight through | About 3 h 20 min with no traffic, plus stops |
| You land at night | Sleep near the airport first | A long road at night is harder to judge |
| You want the cheapest way | Bus 5/245, then 15-17 | Rs 921 on normal fares by our sum |
| You want Sigiriya as well | Taxi to Sigiriya first | Rs 28,188 on the card, a line below Anuradhapura at Rs 30,240 |
Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa first?
Both ancient cities are on the card, and Polonnaruwa is Rs 3,780 more than Anuradhapura at Rs 34,020. Our Anuradhapura versus Polonnaruwa guide explains how the two differ, and our Cultural Triangle region guide shows how they fit with Sigiriya and Dambulla. For a first visit with a short time, the closer one is the simpler plan.
What should you ask before you book the Anuradhapura transfer?
- Which road? The two routes pass through different districts. Ask which your driver will use.
- Passengers and bags. The card does not say how many people or bags the rate covers.
- Tolls. The card does not say if expressway tolls are included.
- Stops. Ask if a meal stop and a stop at Mihintale are allowed, and if waiting time is charged.
- Return. The card is for the airport counter. It does not say if it applies on a trip to the airport.
What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 28 October 2026)
- Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, published by the Disaster Management Centre, is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It puts Level 2 (Amber) on Attanagalla in Gampaha district and on Kurunegala, and Level 1 (Yellow) on Narammala, Alawwa and Mawathagama in Kurunegala district. It does not list Anuradhapura or Puttalam districts.
- Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 said the influence of cyclone Arnab on Sri Lanka's weather has gradually weakened as the storm makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh, India. It expected strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces.
- What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.
If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
