Colombo Airport to Jaffna
Colombo airport to Jaffna by bus: NTC route 87 fares from Colombo, the airport's fixed-fare card rate of Rs 69,660, about 377 km on our road sample and how to split the trip. Checked 28 October 2026.

How do you get from Colombo airport to Jaffna by bus? (Checked 28 October 2026)
Quick answer: We found no direct airport bus, so the usual public route is two legs: bus 187 from the airport to Colombo Fort (Rs 325), then a National Transport Commission bus from Colombo to Jaffna. On the fares effective 6 July 2026, route 87 costs Rs 1,701 for a normal bus, Rs 2,552 for semi-luxury and Rs 3,256 for air-conditioned luxury. The road is about 377 km and nearly 7 hours with no traffic on our map sample. The airport's own taxi card lists JAFFNA-PE at Rs 69,660.
Jaffna is the farthest big town on this list from the airport. That makes the bus question more important than usual, because the difference between a Rs 1,701 ticket and a Rs 69,660 taxi card line is large. This page lays out both, and the time you should expect to spend.
| Option | Price | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus 187, then NTC route 87 (normal) | Rs 325 plus Rs 1,701 | Not listed in the tables | Airport luxury bus page and NTC fare table |
| Bus 187, then NTC route 87 (air-conditioned luxury) | Rs 325 plus Rs 3,256 | Not listed in the tables | Airport luxury bus page and NTC fare table |
| Airport taxi counter, air-conditioned | Rs 69,660 (card line JAFFNA-PE) | 6 h 53 min to 7 h 4 min with no traffic (our OSRM samples) | Airport Taxi Service page |

Which Colombo to Jaffna bus routes does the NTC list?
The NTC table lists more than one Colombo to Jaffna service. We checked these rows against the rendered table.
| NTC route | From and to | Normal | Semi-luxury | Air-conditioned luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 87 | Colombo to Jaffna | Rs 1,701 | Rs 2,552 | Rs 3,256 |
| 15/87 | Colombo to Jaffna | Rs 1,733 | Rs 2,600 | Rs 3,320 |
The three fare columns follow the table's own headings: non-air-conditioned normal service, semi-luxury and air-conditioned luxury. Routes 87 and 15/87 differ by Rs 32 on the normal fare. The table does not say why. It lists route ends only, with no stops and no times.
What the table does not tell you:
- Times. There are no departure or journey times. We found no official timetable we could read, so ask at the Colombo bus stand.
- Where it leaves. The table does not say where in Colombo these buses start, so we cannot say if they leave from the same place as bus 187.
- Seats. We found no seat reservation source for these routes.
- Service quality. Semi-luxury and air-conditioned are fare classes, not a promise about the vehicle. Ask what you are boarding.
Two other Jaffna rows are useful if you plan to come back by another way. Route 43/87 from Kandy to Jaffna is Rs 1,399 normal and Rs 2,099 semi-luxury. Our Kandy guide covers the hill capital and our airport to Kandy guide explains how to reach it.
What is the road route and how long does it take?
We sampled two routes from the airport terminal area to the middle of Jaffna on 28 October 2026. Both start on local roads (B208, B111 and B324), join the Central Expressway (E04) for about 40 km, then follow the A6 to Kurunegala for about 53 km.
| Sample | Distance | Time with no traffic | What differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 1 | 376.8 km | About 6 h 53 min | Reaches the middle of Jaffna on the A9 |
| Route 2 | 384.7 km | About 7 h 4 min | Leaves the A9 near the end and uses the Manipay to Kaithadi road and the Jaffna to Kankesanthurai road |
On route 1, the A9 does most of the work: the map names about 47 km of the Anuradhapura road, about 30 km after that, and about 164 km of the Jaffna to Kandy road, roughly 241 km in all. That is why this trip is long but simple. It is mostly one road. The cost of that simplicity is time. Our sample has no traffic in it, and real speeds on a long single road will be lower.
If you are landing in the afternoon, a straight run to Jaffna means arriving after dark. Plan your arrival with your accommodation, and agree where the driver will drop you.
What does the airport taxi card say about Jaffna?
On the AASL fixed-fare card, as read on 28 October 2026, the line JAFFNA-PE is Rs 69,660 for the air-conditioned taxi. We do not know what the PE on the end of that label stands for. The card shows no last-updated date, does not say how many passengers or bags a rate covers, and does not say if expressway tolls are included. The airport page adds two charges: Rs 130 for each extra kilometre beyond the destination you asked for, and Rs 300 for each extra drop within the agreed journey.
The card also has lines for places nearer to the north. They help show how the rate rises with distance.
| Card line | Rate (air-conditioned) |
|---|---|
| PUTTALAM | Rs 20,520 |
| ANURADHAPURA | Rs 30,240 |
| MANNAR | Rs 45,684 |
| THALEIMANNAR | Rs 49,896 |
| KILINOCHCHI | Rs 50,004 |
| JAFFNA-PE | Rs 69,660 |
On our route 1 distance, Rs 69,660 over 376.8 km is about Rs 185 for each kilometre. That is our arithmetic, not a rate the airport publishes. A rate this large is worth confirming in writing at the counter, together with the passenger and bag limit, before you set out.
Should you fly, drive or break the journey?
AASL's own website lists Jaffna International Airport among the airports it runs. We have not checked whether any airline flies between Colombo and Jaffna, or what it costs, so we make no claim about flights. If a flight matters to you, check airline sites directly.
For road travellers, a break makes the day easier. Anuradhapura sits on the way, about 182 km from the airport on our other map sample (see our airport to Anuradhapura guide). Our Anuradhapura destination page says what is there.
| If this is you | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the lowest cost and travel light | Bus 187, then route 87 normal | Rs 2,026 by our sum, with the wait between buses unknown |
| You want more comfort and can accept a long day | Bus 187, then the air-conditioned luxury fare | Rs 3,581 by our sum |
| You have a lot of luggage or a group | Taxi, with the rate agreed first | The card line is Rs 69,660, per vehicle basis unknown |
| You land late | Sleep near the airport or in Anuradhapura | The road is long and the A9 is better in daylight |
What should you plan for when you reach Jaffna?
Jaffna is best planned as a base, not a quick add-on. Our Jaffna destination page explains the city, fort and island choices, and our Jaffna and the north in 7 days itinerary shows how to use a week. The northern Sri Lanka region guide helps with sequencing. If you plan to see the fort, our Jaffna Fort page is the place to start.
What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 28 October 2026)
- Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, published by the Disaster Management Centre, is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It puts Level 2 (Amber) on Attanagalla in Gampaha district and on the Kurunegala Divisional Secretariat Division, and Level 1 (Yellow) on Narammala, Alawwa and Mawathagama in Kurunegala district. Our road sample uses the A6 through Kurunegala district, going by the road names OSRM returned. The warning lists no district in the Northern or North-central provinces.
- Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 said the influence of cyclone Arnab on Sri Lanka's weather has gradually weakened as the storm makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh, India. It expected strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces. It did not forecast showers for the Northern Province that day.
- What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.
If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
