How long does it take to get from Kandy to Colombo airport? (Checked 28 October 2026)

Quick answer: About 2 hours on the road with no traffic. Two OpenStreetMap routes sampled on 28 October 2026 came out at 112.1 km in 1 hour 58 minutes (mostly the Central Expressway) and 101.2 km in 1 hour 59 minutes (the old A1 road). The airport asks you to arrive at least 4 hours before departure, so a flight needs you to leave Kandy about 6 hours before take-off, before any buffer. A bus costs far less than the card's taxi rate: route 1 from Kandy to Colombo is Rs 521 on a normal bus and the airport lists a Rs 325 bus from the airport to Colombo Fort, but we could not confirm that the second leg runs in your direction.

What do the road routes from Kandy to the airport look like?

The two routes are 10.9 km apart in length and 1 minute apart in time, so the expressway does not save time in our sample, and the old road is shorter. The map's figures have no traffic in them, and we cannot give a figure for delays. Ask your driver which road they will use on the day and how long they expect it to take.

When must you leave Kandy for a flight?

The airport's Departure Procedures page, read on 28 October 2026, says to arrive at the airport at least 4 hours before the time of departure, because there may be long queues depending on the time of day. Add the no-traffic drive of about 1 hour 59 minutes and you have the latest start with no buffer. This table is our arithmetic. Leave earlier than any time in it, because the drive time has no traffic, no stops and no weather in it.

What are the bus fares from Kandy to the airport?

We found no bus table row that goes from Kandy to the airport. The tables list route ends only, with no stops and no times. These are the rows that matter, all as effective from 6 July 2026.

The expressway rows carry one fare class in that table. The airport lists two buses that start at the terminal: bus 187 to Colombo Fort (Rs 325 a person, about 50 minutes, 24 hours a day, boarding at the Departure Terminal Outer Porch) and a bus to the Makumbura Multimodal Center (Rs 410 a person, about 50 minutes, boarding at the Arrival Outer Porch). The Makumbura page shows its timetable as an image, so confirm how often it runs on that page. Both charge an extra fee equal to the ticket price for baggage over 23 kg.

The sums are ours, and they carry one big gap. The airport pages describe boarding at the airport. We found no page that lists a stop in Colombo or Makumbura for the return trip, so ask before you plan around either airport bus. Route 1/245 is the nearest match in the table, since Negombo is the town next to the airport, but we found no sourced fare for the last leg. The tables give no times either, so a bus plan needs a larger buffer than a taxi. Newswire and the Daily Mirror reported on 25 October 2026 that train services between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola were suspended until further notice. The Sri Lanka Railways website did not load on 28 October 2026, so we could not confirm train times or any restart, and this page gives no train times or fares.

Is there a taxi price card for Kandy to the airport?

Not for this direction. The airport's fixed-fare card, as read on 28 October 2026, lists KANDY at Rs 21,384 for the air-conditioned taxi, and GALAGEDARA (KANDY) at Rs 21,276. The counters are in the Arrival Lobby, and the card is for rides from the airport. We found nothing on the airport pages that says the same rate applies when you are going to the airport. Treat these figures as a reference only, and agree the price in writing with your driver or hotel before you set off. The card shows no last-updated date, does not say how many passengers or bags a rate covers, and does not say if expressway tolls are included.

• Landslide warning: the Disaster Management Centre's early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, prepared with the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It put Level 2 (Amber) on all 11 Kegalle district areas, on five Kandy district areas (Pasbage Korale, Ganga Ihala Korale, Udunuwara, Yatinuwara and Udapalatha), and on Kurunegala, with Level 1 (Yellow) on eight other Kandy district areas and on Narammala, Alawwa and Mawathagama in Kurunegala district. It listed no Level 3 (Red) area in Kandy, Kegalle or Kurunegala districts. The A1 route crosses Kegalle district.
• Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 expected several spells of showers in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy district, and strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the North-western Province.
