Sri Lanka Tour Package from Chennai: What to Check
A buyer checklist for a 5 to 7 day Sri Lanka package from Chennai: flights, the free ETA for Indians, what to look for in inclusions, SAARC ticket discounts, rupee rules and questions to ask before paying. Checked 24 October 2026.

What should you check in a Sri Lanka tour package from Chennai?
Quick answer: Check four things before you pay: who really runs the trip in Sri Lanka, whether the Chennai flights are inside the price, which entrance tickets are included, and what the quote says about the ETA. Indian citizens get a free 30-day tourist ETA, so a "visa fee" line needs an explanation. For a 5 to 7 day trip, ask for the day-by-day drive times in writing. Our two India itineraries show what a realistic plan looks like.
This page is a buyer checklist for people leaving from Chennai. It does not repeat the routes. For the days themselves, use our 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary from India or our 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary from India. For how to judge any package, read our wider guide to choosing a Sri Lanka tour package.
Do Indians need a visa for a Sri Lanka package?
You need an ETA, and for Indian citizens it is free. The Sri Lanka ETA site (eta.gov.lk) says that from 25 May 2026 nationals of 40 listed countries, India among them, can get a tourist ETA free of charge for 30 days. The same notice says the free visa allows double entry within the 30 days, and that anyone who wants to stay longer must apply for an extension and pay the fee.
Three practical points for a package buyer:
- The ETA still has to be applied for. Free does not mean automatic. Everyone, including those on the free list, must hold an approved ETA before arriving.
- A package seller may offer to apply for you. That can be convenient, but ask what any service fee covers. The official fee is zero for Indian citizens.
- Use only the official site. Our Sri Lanka visa guide lists the official addresses and warns about look-alike sites. It also lists what you need at entry, including a passport, not just an ID card, valid for at least 6 months from arrival, a return ticket and enough funds.
Are flights included in a Chennai package?
Ask. Some quotes are "land only", and some include flights. A package with flights should name the airline, the dates and the baggage, and say what happens if you change the date.
SriLankan Airlines lists Colombo flights from Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai on its India routes page, as noted on our 5-day itinerary. On 18 October 2026 its page showed lowest round-trip economy fares to Colombo from INR 22,131 from Chennai, for travel in late October and November 2026. The airline said these fares were collected in the previous 48 hours and may change. That figure is a "from" fare for specific dates, not a typical price, so use it only to see whether a flight line in a quote is in a sensible range for your own dates.
We do not give flight times or other airlines' fares, because we found no official timetable to cite. Check your dates directly.
Can a package include the ferry?
A package can include the Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai ferry, but it is a separate route from Chennai flights. Our India to Sri Lanka ferry guide says the ferry sails six days a week, every day except Tuesday, and that it paused for the north-east monsoon in 2025. As of our last check on 19 October 2026 no 2026 pause had been announced. The operator's travel policy gives a free checked baggage allowance of 10 kg from Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai, so a package that includes the ferry should say how your luggage is handled.
If a quote includes the ferry, ask for the sailing date in writing and a fallback if it is cancelled. The ferry guide has the details.
What should a 5 to 7 day package include?
Use this table when you read the inclusions. Every line should be a yes or a no.
| Item | What to ask | Notes from our guides |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels | Name, nights, room type, meals | Ask for named hotels, not "3 star" only |
| Vehicle | Private AC car or van, driver, fuel, tolls | A driver is not a guide |
| Guide | Is there one, and is the guide SLTDA registered? | SLTDA's rules say agencies should use registered guides |
| Heritage tickets | Which sites are paid for, and at which rate? | See the SAARC note below |
| Airport transfers | Both ways, and who meets you | Arrival day and departure day matter most |
| Meals | Breakfast only or more | Meals are an easy place to hide cost |
| Taxes | Inside the price? | Quote like for like |
| Train rides | Which train, which class, how booked | Seats open up to 30 days ahead on the railway system, per our train guide |
| Travel insurance | Included or not? | Ask. Do not assume |
For the 5-day shape, our India itinerary uses two nights in Kandy and two nights in Nuwara Eliya, with the Ramboda Hanuman temple and the Sita Amman temple area. For the 7-day shape, our India itinerary links Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Kandy around Buddhist heritage. If a package sells you something very different in 5 or 7 days, check each day's drive on a map.
Do Indian visitors get a heritage ticket discount, and does the package pass it on?
This is the question many Chennai buyers forget. The Central Cultural Fund says SAARC citizens, which includes Indians, get a 50 per cent discount on its tickets. Prices are quoted in US dollars and paid in rupees at the day's rate. On the CCF price list updated 14 October 2026, a full foreign ticket costs USD 35 for Sigiriya and USD 30 each for Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, which add up to USD 95 for the three. If the 50 per cent discount applies as the CCF states, half of that is USD 47.50, but treat that as our arithmetic, not a quoted price. The CCF list has no separate SAARC column, so confirm the discounted amount at the counter with your passport.
What to ask: "Are the heritage tickets in your price at the full foreign rate or the SAARC rate?" If a package prices tickets at the full rate for an Indian passport holder, you may be paying for the discount you could have had. The discount covers CCF sites only, not every temple or park.
Can you pay in Indian rupees in Sri Lanka?
Not for everyday payments. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka made the Indian rupee a designated foreign currency in August 2022 for banking and trade. It says that does not make the rupee legal tender, and that payments inside Sri Lanka are made in Sri Lankan rupees. Our money and ATMs guide explains UPI at LankaQR shops.
For a package, ask:
- Which parts are prepaid in INR?
- Is the quote fixed in INR, or priced in US dollars and converted on the day? Ask for the exchange rate in writing.
- Which costs must you pay in LKR on the trip, such as meals and tips?
How do you check the Sri Lankan operator behind a Chennai package?
A Chennai seller may be an agent who sells a trip that a Sri Lankan operator runs on the ground. Either way, you should know who the operator is.
SLTDA, Sri Lanka's tourism regulator, says travel agencies must register under the Tourism Act No. 38 of 2005 and hold a licence. Its rules for new agencies say the agency must be run from a fixed office in Sri Lanka and cannot operate from overseas.
Ask the seller for the name and SLTDA registration number of the Sri Lankan agency that will run the trip. Then look that business up in the travel agents directory on srilanka.travel and check SLTDA's blacklisted agencies page. Our main package checklist walks through the steps.
What are the red flags for a Chennai package?
- No named Sri Lankan operator, or an operator with no SLTDA registration number.
- A visa line for an ETA that is free for Indians.
- A flight price with no airline or dates.
- A fixed INR price with no stated exchange basis for dollar costs.
- Heritage tickets at the full foreign rate with no explanation.
- A day plan with a very long drive and four stops.
- "Or similar" instead of hotel names.
- A promise of a through Kandy to Ella train. Our Kandy to Ella train vs road guide explains why that is not a safe default.
- Pressure to pay a large deposit today, or to a personal account.
What does the weather mean for a late October or November package?
Rain is possible almost anywhere in October and November, and hill roads and trains can be disrupted by landslides. Our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide has the month-by-month pattern. Ask the seller what the plan is if a train, a road or a hill-country stop is affected. A good package states a fallback in writing. Our Colombo to Kandy train guide tracks the current rail status, which changes quickly in wet weather.
What questions should you ask before paying?
- Who is the Sri Lankan operator, and what is its SLTDA registration number?
- Are the Chennai flights inside the price? Which airline, dates and baggage?
- Is the ETA handled by you, and what do you charge, if anything?
- Which hotels, by name, and how many nights each?
- Is the vehicle private and air conditioned, and who is the driver?
- Is there a guide, and is the guide SLTDA registered?
- Which heritage tickets are included, at the full foreign rate or the SAARC rate?
- Which meals are included?
- What is the price in INR, what is prepaid, and what must I pay in LKR?
- What are the payment dates and the cancellation terms?
- What is the plan if rain, a landslide or a cancelled train changes a day?
- Who is the contact in Sri Lanka at night?
Sri Lanka Tourism's hotline, 1912, is listed in our safety guide as a 24-hour number for tourists.
How should you decide between a package and building the trip yourself?
If you want one payment and one contact, a package can be convenient, especially for a short trip. If you are comfortable booking hotels and a driver yourself, you can build the same 5 or 7 day route from our itineraries and ask a licensed operator for a driver-only quote to compare. We do not claim either route is cheaper, because we found no price comparison to cite. Start with our how to plan a Sri Lanka trip guide if you want to see everything you would need to book.
Frequently asked questions
Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka in 2026?
Indian citizens need an ETA before travel, and it is free. The official eta.gov.lk site lists India among 40 countries whose nationals get a free tourist ETA valid for 30 days with double entry, from 25 May 2026. You still apply online before you fly. A package should not charge you a visa fee on top without explaining what the charge is for.
What should a Sri Lanka tour package from Chennai include?
Ask for written details of the hotels and nights, the vehicle and driver, any guide, airport transfers, meals, entrance tickets, activities and taxes. Also ask whether the Chennai flights are inside the price. Some quotes show a land-only price, so check the first line before comparing totals.
Are flights included in a Chennai to Sri Lanka package?
It depends on the quote, so ask. SriLankan Airlines lists Colombo flights from Chennai on its India routes page. On 18 October 2026 it showed a lowest round-trip economy fare of INR 22,131 from Chennai for travel in late October and November 2026, and says fares can change. Compare that kind of fare with the flight line in any package.
Do Indian tourists get discounts on Sri Lankan heritage tickets?
Yes, at Central Cultural Fund sites. The CCF says SAARC citizens, which includes Indians, get a 50 per cent discount. Its price list updated 14 October 2026 shows a full foreign ticket of USD 35 for Sigiriya, so confirm the discounted amount at the counter with your passport. Ask whether your package prices tickets at the full foreign rate or the SAARC rate.
Can I use Indian rupees in Sri Lanka?
Not for everyday payments. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka says the Indian rupee is a designated foreign currency for banking and trade but is not legal tender. Payments inside Sri Lanka are made in Sri Lankan rupees. Ask your package seller which costs are prepaid in INR and which you must pay in LKR on the trip.
Is there a ferry from India that a package can include?
There is a passenger ferry from Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai near Jaffna, but Chennai is not the ferry port. It sails six days a week except Tuesdays and has paused for the north-east monsoon in the past. If a package includes the ferry, ask for the sailing date in writing and what happens if it is cancelled.
How do I check that a Chennai package seller's Sri Lankan operator is licensed?
Ask for the SLTDA registration number of the Sri Lankan travel agency that will run the trip, then look it up in the travel agents directory on srilanka.travel and check SLTDA's blacklist page. SLTDA says travel agencies must register under the Tourism Act and cannot operate from overseas, so ask who the local operator is.
