How much does a Sri Lanka trip cost?

Sri Lanka trip costs in GBP, USD, EUR and JPY at the Central Bank rate of 16 Oct 2026: official tickets and fares, SLTDA daily spend, and room, surf and garden prices sampled from businesses' own pages on 17 Oct 2026.

How much does a Sri Lanka trip cost?

About US$148 to US$172 a day on average, or roughly £112 to £130, €133 to €154 or ¥23,500 to ¥27,200. That is the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority's 2025 average daily tourist spend (US$171.74 from January to July and US$148.26 from August to December, provisional), converted at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka's buying rates for 16 October 2026. It is a national average, not a quote. Your own total depends mostly on your rooms and whether you hire a driver, so this page adds up the costs you can check, in four currencies.

The same SLTDA review puts the average 2025 stay at 8.29 nights. For trip length, see the how-many-days guide.

How much does a Sri Lanka trip cost in pounds, dollars, euros and yen?

Rupee prices converted at the CBSL buying rates for 16 October 2026 (CBSL daily indicative rates). The buying rate is the rate at which banks buy foreign currency, so it is close to what you get when you change money into rupees.

The CCF prices Sigiriya at US$35 but charges it in rupees at its own rate (336 LKR per US$ on 14 October), so the rupee price is what you pay. UK, US, German, Australian and Japanese passport holders are among the 40 nationalities with a free tourist ETA since 25 May 2026, so they skip the visa line. See the Sri Lanka visa guide.

What do the fixed costs add up to on a two-week trip?

Here is a worked example for the two-week Sri Lanka itinerary, using only prices we could check.

Not included, because there is no official or sampled price to use: hotel nights on most of the route, meals, a hired driver, the Yala safari permit and jeep, and international flights. A ten-day version without Polonnaruwa comes to LKR 19,159 (about £44, US$59, €52 or ¥9,297). The 10-day classic itinerary lists its costs day by day.

What do rooms, surf lessons and tours cost?

There is no official room-rate list for Sri Lanka, so we read prices on businesses' own websites on 17 October 2026. These are samples from one south coast town and one garden, not averages.

How much is the Sri Lanka visa?

Tourists from 40 listed countries have been able to obtain a tourist ETA free of charge since 25 May 2026. It is valid for 30 days with double entry. Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore ETAs are also processed at no charge; Maldivian nationals receive 90 days. Every foreign national, including those free-ETA nationalities, must obtain the ETA before arrival on the official Department of Immigration and Emigration site, eta.gov.lk.

The official fee page, checked on 9 October 2026, prices a tourist visa with double entry for 30 days at US$ 50 for non-SAARC nationals and US$ 20 for SAARC nationals. An on-arrival visa at the port of entry is listed at US$ 60 (US$ 25 for SAARC). Children under 12 of any nationality are free of charge. Gazette 2337/10 of 21 June 2023 is cited on that page for the overstay-penalty amendment, not as the heading of the tourist-fee table. Travellers who are not on the free list should confirm the amount on the official fee list before paying anyone else. See the full free-visa country list.

Extensions are a separate paid product. The same fee page lists tourist-extension bands from USD 60 to USD 200 by nationality group and length of stay (31 to 90, 91 to 180 and 181 to 270 days). The Sri Lanka visa guide covers who qualifies and how to apply; this page only records the fees.

How much is accommodation?

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority registers accommodation by category. The 2025 Year in Review lists classified tourist hotels from one to five star, plus guest houses, home-stay units, bungalows, boutique hotels and related types. That is a classification of the formal sector, not a price list. No official SLTDA page checked on 9 October 2026 published a current room rate for any star category.

Use the SLTDA daily-expenditure figures only as a national average of what recorded tourists spent, not as a nightly hotel quote. Confirm the rate, taxes and what is included with the property you actually book.

How much are trains, buses and drivers?

Trains

Sri Lanka Railways publishes passenger ticket rates by origin station. The Colombo Fort passenger ticket-rate PDF has no printed effective date. The copy checked on 9 October 2026 lists these ordinary class fares from Colombo Fort:

Destination1st class (LKR)2nd class (LKR)3rd class (LKR)
Peradeniya Junction950500240
Kandy950500240
Ella1,750900440

A fare on that PDF is not proof that the train is running. Kandy station remains closed to trains until the Peradeniya railway bridge is restored; check the Kandy-to-Ella train guide for current sections. Reserved observation, air-conditioned and other reserved products are priced in the official reservation system for the exact date, and can differ from the unreserved class table. Confirm class, date and operation before paying.

Buses

The National Transport Commission published an interim bus-fare revision effective from 00.01 hrs on 6 July 2026. The inter-provincial full-fare PDF, fetched on 9 October 2026, includes these route figures (two fare columns per row; this page does not relabel the columns as a class, because the extract does not print English class headers on those rows):

RouteFirst listed fare (LKR)Second listed fare (LKR)
Colombo to Matara1,022.001,320.00
Colombo to Gallenot listed970.00
Colombo to Nuwara Eliya1,266.001,619.00
Colombo to Anuradhapura1,292.001,651.00
Colombo to Jaffna2,552.003,256.00

Search the NTC fare page for the exact origin, destination and service type rather than copying a blog fare. A Colombo to Kandy figure was not clearly readable in the same extract, so this page does not invent one.

Hired drivers

No official national tariff for a hired car, van or driver was found on 9 October 2026. The getting-around guide lists the questions to settle in a quote: vehicle, hours, fuel, tolls, waiting and what happens if the route changes, without publishing a “standard” daily rate.

How much does food cost?

No official page checked on 9 October 2026 publishes a restaurant meal price, street-food price or recommended daily food budget. Food sits inside SLTDA's average daily tourist expenditure, which also covers beds, transport and other spending. That average cannot be split into a meal quote from the Year in Review table. Confirm current prices where you eat.

How much are entry tickets for major sites?

The Central Cultural Fund says ticket prices are quoted in US dollars, payable in rupees at the current rate, and that SAARC citizens get a 50 per cent discount. Its daily price table, last updated 14 October 2026 at 7:03 am, used 336.00 LKR per USD and listed:

Site (CCF table)Full ticketHalf ticket
SigiriyaUS$ 35.00 / LKR 11,760.00US$ 20.00 / LKR 6,720.00
PolonnaruwaUS$ 30.00 / LKR 10,080.00US$ 15.00 / LKR 5,040.00
AnuradhapuraUS$ 30.00 / LKR 10,080.00US$ 15.00 / LKR 5,040.00
Dambulla (Museum)US$ 3.00 / LKR 1,008.00US$ 1.50 / LKR 504.00

The table does not define who qualifies for a half ticket. CCF also sells a Cultural Triangle round ticket; that page does not print a round-ticket price on the daily table, so this guide does not quote one. Confirm the product and price on the CCF pricing page or the heritage ticket page before travel. The Ancient City of Sigiriya page is the place to plan the climb itself.

Dambulla Cave Temple

CCF lists Dambulla Cave Temple as a ticketed heritage site, but the daily CCF price table updated 14 October 2026 shows only Dambulla (Museum), not a cave-temple entry fee. The cave temple's own ticket-counter page on caverocktemple.lk showed a visiting charge of LKR 3,000, with free entry for children under 12. Treat that as the temple counter's published figure on the day it was fetched, and confirm at the counter. A museum ticket is not the cave visit. See the Dambulla Cave Temple place page for access and conduct.

Temple of the Tooth, Kandy

Sri Dalada Maligawa's official FAQ, fetched on 9 October 2026, prices foreign tickets at LKR 2,500 for SAARC nationals and for Thailand and Myanmar, and LKR 3,000 for all other countries. The ticket includes the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Dalada Museum, World Buddhist Museum, Tusker Museum and Royal Elephant Stable. Tickets are issued by machines at the temple; tickets sold by other people or institutions are not valid. Confirm on the temple FAQ.

How much are safari park fees?

Visitors enter national parks with a permit, on conditions, after paying the prescribed fee. That is the Department of Wildlife Conservation's own statement. The national-park and ePermit how-to pages checked on 9 October 2026 do not publish a standing foreign-visitor entrance price. The ePermit portal states that charges vary based on the national park and the group and vehicle details.

Do not copy a safari total from an undated travel article. Confirm the park, date, group size and vehicle in the DWC ePermit portal, then add any separate jeep-hire quote from the operator; this site has no official jeep-hire tariff to publish. Use the national-parks comparison for route fit, and the Yala National Park page for current access, including any block closure.

What does this page not quote?

  • International airfares.
  • An official hotel or guesthouse rate list (none was found; see the dated samples above).
  • Restaurant or street-food prices (no official list was found).
  • A hired-driver daily rate (no official tariff was found).
  • A standing DWC safari entrance fee (not published on the pages checked).
  • A CCF Cultural Triangle round-ticket price (not printed on the daily table).
  • A Colombo to Kandy bus fare (not clearly readable in the NTC extract).

Where a number is missing, the honest next step is the official source for that bucket, not a guess.
