How to Plan a Sri Lanka Trip

A first-timer checklist for planning a Sri Lanka trip in decision order: when to go, visa and ETA, how many days, route, transport, money and eSIM, tickets, and safety. Official links only, checked 23 October 2026.

How do you plan a Sri Lanka trip for the first time?

Quick answer: Plan in decision order, not by scrolling random hotel lists. First choose a season and coast, then confirm your ETA on the official site, then lock how many days and one coherent route. Only after that should you book transport, money or an eSIM, site tickets and a weather or hill-road safety check. This page is a checklist, not a second itinerary.

If you already know your dates and only need a day-by-day plan, jump to a finished route such as the 12-day first-timers itinerary, the one-week Cultural Triangle route, or the 14-day first-timers plan. Everyone else should stay on this page and work down the timeline.

The planning order that saves money

StepDecisionWhy it comes first
1Season and coastRain and sea conditions decide whether the south, east or hills make sense
2ETA and passportEntry status blocks every later booking
3Number of daysSets how many regions you can keep without long daily drives
4Route anchorsStops and night counts before hotel shopping
5Transport modeTrain only where the line is open; road for the rest
6Money, SIM, ticketsFees you can verify on official pages
7Safety bufferForecast, landslide warnings, spare day before you fly

Skip a step and you often rebook flights or hotels. The best time to visit and how many days pages sit under steps 1 and 3.

T-60: about two months out

Season first. Sri Lanka Tourism and the Department of Meteorology describe two main monsoon patterns and two inter-monsoons. In broad terms, December to February suits the west and south coasts for many visitors, while May to September suits much of the east. October and November are second inter-monsoon months with island-wide storm risk. Match your holiday window to a coast, then read the month page for that window.

Visa and ETA second. On 23 October 2026, eta.gov.lk still showed Alert 01: from 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 listed countries (including Australia, India, the United Kingdom and the United States) can get a tourist ETA free of charge for 30 days, with double entry inside that window. Every foreign national still needs an ETA before arrival, including those free nationalities and the bilateral cases named on the same alert. Apply only on eta.gov.lk. Details and exceptions sit on our Sri Lanka visa guide.

Flights and the first night. Book the inbound flight only after the ETA rules fit your passport. Keep the first night near Bandaranaike International Airport or an easy arrival base such as Negombo if you land late. The Colombo airport arrival guide covers the first hours on the ground.

Rough budget. SLTDA's 2025 Year in Review (provisional) put average tourist expenditure at about US$171.74 a day in January to July and US$148.26 a day in August to December. That is a national average, not your quote. Use the trip cost guide for dated tickets, fares and sample rooms.

T-30: about one month out

Lock the route. Pick one coherent loop. A common first-timer shape is Cultural Triangle, then Kandy, then the hill country, then the south coast, then back toward Colombo. Do not add Jaffna, the far east and a full safari loop on top of that unless you have three weeks. Compare finished templates:

Transport plan. Read getting around Sri Lanka. For the famous hill section, do not assume a through Kandy to Ella train. As of late October 2026, planning pages on this site treat the Nanu Oya to Ella section and full road options as the workable paths. Check Sri Lanka Railways media notices for your travel week, and see Kandy to Ella train vs road when you need a decision table.

Driver or self-drive. Many visitors hire a driver-guide for the Cultural Triangle and airport legs, then use a train where it is open. There is no single official private-hire tariff on the routes we checked, so get a written quote that names the vehicle, days, overtime and what happens in heavy rain.

Accommodation pattern. Book the arrival night and the departure night firmly. Keep middle nights refundable until you confirm rail sections and weather for hill transfers.

T-7: the week before you fly

Re-check weather and landslides. On 22 to 23 October 2026, Newsfirst reported landslide warnings still in effect for parts of Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura, with coastal wind risk tied to a Bay of Bengal low. Daily Mirror (22 October) reported the Disaster Management Centre urging people to reconsider planned hill-country excursions and to check road conditions (call 117). Those notices change daily. Before any hill drive, open the newest DMC landslide and weather reports rather than trusting a week-old summary.

Re-check trains. Open the Sri Lanka Railways media notices for your dates. Earth slips and repair works have repeatedly limited Upcountry services in October 2026. If your plan needs Nanu Oya to Ella, confirm that section still shows as operating and that you have a seat reservation for the right day.

Tickets and parks. The Central Cultural Fund table checked on 23 October 2026 (page stamp 14 October 2026, 7:03 am) listed Sigiriya at US$35 full / US$20 half and Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura at US$30 full / US$15 half, at 336.00 LKR per USD. Prices move with that rate. Book or pay as the CCF site instructs, and confirm park permits separately if you added Yala or another reserve.

Money and connectivity. Decide cash versus cards using the money and ATMs guide. For data, compare an eSIM and a local SIM on eSIM vs local SIM and the Sri Lanka eSIM guide. Buy nothing until you know whether your phone is unlocked and which airports or city shops you can reach on day one.

Whale watching, if relevant. The Navy's seasonal note still places southern cruises from Galle in November to April and Trincomalee cruises in May to October. When we loaded whalewatching.navy.lk on 23 October 2026, the homepage also stated that cruises were not running during routine ship maintenance. Treat that as a live operational check, not a season change. Confirm your date on the Navy site and keep a spare beach day.

Arrival day checklist

  1. Clear immigration with your approved ETA details matching your passport.
  2. Ignore random SIM and taxi touts until you have agreed a price or followed an official desk process.
  3. Message your hotel or driver with the real exit time, not the scheduled landing time.
  4. Keep the first afternoon light if you flew overnight.
  5. Save Sri Lanka Tourism's 24-hour hotline 1912 and emergency 119 / disaster information 117 in your phone before you leave Wi-Fi.

Safety and honesty checks before you pay deposits

Sri Lanka is workable for first-timers who read current notices. It is not a place to ignore rain warnings on hill roads or to invent a through train that is not running. Use Is Sri Lanka safe? for the broader picture, and treat Met and DMC PDFs as higher priority than social media itineraries.

Do not pay large cash deposits to unverified agents. Prefer operators and hotels you can verify, keep receipts, and leave one flexible day in every 7 to 10 day plan.

Two related guides: Sri Lanka on a budget if cost is the main limit, and Is Sri Lanka worth visiting? if you are still deciding whether to go. If you are weighing a package, read How to choose a Sri Lanka tour package before paying a deposit.

What this checklist deliberately skips

This page does not replace month guides, day-by-day itineraries or transport how-tos. It also does not quote private taxi prices where no official tariff exists, and it does not promise whale sightings or dry weather. When a fact cannot be checked on an official page the same day, we omit it or mark it clearly.

Next step after the checklist

When steps 1 to 4 are done, open one itinerary and one transport page only:

Then stop collecting tabs and book the first and last nights.

Frequently asked questions

How do I plan a Sri Lanka trip for the first time?

Work in this order: pick a season and coast, confirm your ETA on eta.gov.lk, choose how many days and one coherent route, then lock transport, money or eSIM, site tickets and a safety check for rain and hill roads. Do not book non-refundable stays before the visa and the season match your route.

Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival. Since 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries, including the UK, the US, Australia and India, get the tourist ETA free for 30 days with double entry. Apply only on eta.gov.lk. Other nationalities pay the fee shown on that site.

How many days do I need in Sri Lanka?

There is no official minimum. Seven days suits one region. Ten to twelve days cover the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hills and the south coast at a calm pace. Fourteen days add a safari day or a slower south-coast finish. Match days to regions in our how-many-days guide.

What should I book first for Sri Lanka?

Confirm the ETA, then flights, then the first and last nights near the airport or your arrival base. Book reserved train seats only after you check that the section you need is running. Leave some hotel nights refundable until weather and rail notices are clear for your week.

Is Sri Lanka expensive to plan?

SLTDA's 2025 provisional average tourist spend was about US$148 to US$172 a day. Fixed costs such as CCF site tickets and SIMs are listed on our trip-cost page. Rooms and a private driver usually dominate the total, so sample those for your dates rather than relying on the national average alone.

Should I hire a driver or use trains in Sri Lanka?

Many first-timers mix both. Trains are useful where the line is open, for example Nanu Oya to Ella. Long Cultural Triangle legs and airport transfers are often easier by hired car. Check Sri Lanka Railways notices before you plan a through hill-country train.

When should I apply for the Sri Lanka ETA?

Apply once your passport details and travel window are fixed, and only on the official ETA site. The free tourist ETA for the listed 40 countries is valid for 30 days from first arrival with double entry. Extensions beyond 30 days need a paid application after arrival.

What is the last thing to check before I fly?

On arrival day minus seven, re-check the Met Department or DMC forecast for each stop, any landslide warnings for hill drives, Sri Lanka Railways media notices for your train dates, and CCF or park ticket pages for price and opening changes.

Practical

eSIM vs Local SIM in Sri Lanka

A local tourist SIM or eSIM from Dialog, SLT-Mobitel or Hutch costs about USD 2.50 to 9 for a week to a month of data, priced on the operators' own pages on 20 October 2026. An eSIM saves the SIM swap and keeps your home SIM in the phone; a physical SIM works in any unlocked phone.
