Colombo Airport to Ella
Colombo airport to Ella by road: our 206 km route sample, the airport's fixed-fare card rate of Rs 36,030, bus fares to Badulla and the hill-country weather check. Checked 27 October 2026.

How far is Colombo airport from Ella, and what does the transfer cost? (Checked 27 October 2026)
Quick answer: Ella is about 206 km from Bandaranaike International Airport by road. Our map sample on 27 October 2026 gave 3 hours 51 minutes with no traffic, so plan on more. The airport's own taxi card, read the same day, lists ELLA at Rs 36,030. There is no airport bus to Ella that we could find, so most people use that taxi, a private driver or a two-leg bus journey.
Figures for this trip vary from site to site, partly because they start from different places, such as Colombo city or the airport, and end at different points in Ella. Our figure is for one stated start and one stated end. The start is the airport terminal area. The end is Ella town. A hotel up a side road adds a little to both distance and time.
| Option | Price | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport taxi counter, air-conditioned | Rs 36,030 (card line ELLA) | About 3 h 51 min with no traffic (our OSRM sample) | Airport Taxi Service page |
| Bus 187 to Colombo Fort, then a Colombo to Badulla bus | Rs 325 plus Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,117 normal fare, from NTC routes 21-6 and 99 | Not listed in the tables | Airport luxury bus page and NTC fare tables |
| Uber or PickMe | Shown in the app | Check in the app | Airport transport page |
What is our road sample from the airport to Ella?
Distance and time are the most copied and least checked numbers on this route, so here is exactly what we did. On 27 October 2026 we asked the OSRM driving router for the road route between the airport terminal area and Ella town, using OpenStreetMap data. OSRM does not include traffic, roadworks or rain.
| Route | Distance | Time | Main roads in the route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 1, the first one OSRM offers | 205.7 km | 3 h 51 min | B208 and B445 out of Katunayake, then a stretch of the B408, then the A4 for about 123 km, then the A16 |
| Route 2, via the expressways | 229.7 km | 3 h 52 min | Colombo to Katunayake Expressway (E03), the Outer Circular Highway (E02), 14.6 km of the Southern Expressway (E01), the A8, then the A4 and the A16 |
Two points stand out. First, the longer expressway route saves no time on this sample, and it would add tolls we cannot source. Second, about 60 percent of Route 1 is on the A4, a long road that runs through Ratnapura district and climbs towards the hills. That is why the weather check below matters.
Our Sri Lanka map and distances guide lists Colombo to Ella at 196 km and 3 h 38 min. That sample starts in Colombo, not at the airport terminal, so the two figures do not conflict. For the south coast side, see south coast to Ella transport, and for a route from Kandy see Kandy to Ella by road.
What is the airport taxi rate to Ella, and how does it compare with nearby towns?
| Card destination name | Rate (Rs) |
|---|---|
| KANDY | 21,384 |
| RATNAPURA | 23,328 |
| BALANGODA | 27,216 |
| NANUOYA | 30,240 |
| HAPUTALE | 33,696 |
| BANDARAWELA | 34,992 |
| ELLA | 36,030 |
| WELLAWAYA | 38,016 |
| BADULLA | 39,852 |
Compare the rungs. The card puts Ella Rs 1,038 above Bandarawela and Rs 2,334 above Haputale. It puts Wellawaya, which is lower down the hill, Rs 1,986 above Ella. The card does not explain how it prices, so do not guess from the map. Ask the counter for the exact name you want and show your booking.
If you only want to reach the hills and not Ella itself, those lower rates give you a way to split the trip. A stay in Haputale or Bandarawela cuts about Rs 2,300 or Rs 1,000 from a one-way taxi fare, according to the card, and leaves a shorter drive to Ella the next day. That is arithmetic on card rates, not a price for the second leg, which you would need to arrange yourself.
The page lists two add-ons: Rs 130 for each extra kilometre beyond the requested destination and Rs 300 for each extra drop within the agreed journey. It does not say how many passengers or bags the rate covers, or if expressway tolls are included. The counters are in the Arrival Lobby and the Arrival Outer Porch, and the phone number is +94 11 226 3096.
Is there a bus from Colombo airport to Ella?
Not directly, as far as we can tell. The airport lists two buses: the 187 to Colombo Fort (Rs 325 a person, about 50 minutes, boarding at the Departure Terminal Outer Porch) and a bus to the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre (Rs 410 a person, about 50 minutes, boarding at the Arrival Outer Porch). Baggage over 23 kg costs the same again on each.
The NTC fare tables, effective 6 July 2026, list buses toward Ella's end of the line:
| NTC route | From | To | Normal | Semi-luxury | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 99 | Colombo | Badulla | Rs 1,117 | Rs 1,676 | Rs 2,131 |
| 21-6 | Colombo | Badulla | Rs 1,100 | Rs 1,650 | Not listed |
| 21/1/245 | Badulla | Katunayake | Rs 1,057 | Not listed | Rs 2,019 |
| EX 1-74/31-2 | Makumbura | Badulla | Rs 2,700 | Not listed | Not listed |
The tables give no timetable, no departure point and no list of stops, and not which road each Colombo to Badulla route takes, so we cannot say that any of these calls at Ella. Ask the driver or conductor before you pay. The NTC tables are printed in Sinhala. We read only the route number, the two end points and the three fare columns (normal, semi-luxury and air-conditioned luxury), and we have not read anything else into them.
Adding two legs gives a rough floor. Bus 187 (Rs 325) plus route 99 normal (Rs 1,117) is Rs 1,442. The Makumbura bus (Rs 410) plus the expressway route (Rs 2,700) is Rs 3,110. Both ignore the time between connections and any local ride in Colombo. Route 21/1/245 suggests there is a bus between Badulla and the airport area, but we do not know whether it stops at the terminal. Do not plan around it until you have asked.
Should you go straight to Ella or break the journey?
| Your situation | Suggested plan | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You land in the morning and feel fresh | Drive straight, with stops | About 4 hours with no traffic, more with stops and rain |
| You land in the evening or after a long flight | Sleep near the airport or in Colombo first | A mountain road is harder when tired. See Colombo airport to Colombo city |
| You want a tea-country stop | Split at Nuwara Eliya | See Colombo airport to Nuwara Eliya |
| You prefer a lower, cheaper fare | Split at Haputale or Bandarawela | The card rates are lower, and the last leg is shorter |
| You are comparing places | Read Ella vs Nuwara Eliya first | The two towns feel very different |
Ella sits at about 1,041 m, according to our hill country altitude and weather guide. The road climbs most of the way, so expect cooler air and changeable weather at the end of the trip. For the town itself, see our Ella destination guide and the wider hill country region page.
What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 27 October 2026)
- Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, published by the Disaster Management Centre, is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It replaces LEWM-26-10-2026-1800-33, which expired at 18:00 on 27 October, and lists the same divisions at the same levels. It puts Level 3 (Red) on Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood in Nuwara Eliya district and on Kuruwita, Elapatha, Ayagama, Openayake, Pelmadulla and Ratnapura in Ratnapura district. It puts Level 2 (Amber) on Balangoda, Kiriella, Nivithigala, Kalawana, Eheliyagoda and Godakawela in Ratnapura district, and on Kegalle district areas including Deraniyagala and Yatiyanthota. Our Route 1 sample runs along the A4 through the Ratnapura area, going by the road names OSRM returned. Badulla district, where Ella is, is not listed in this warning.
- Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 27 October 2026 said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, with fairly heavy falls above 75 mm likely at some places. It expected winds of 40 to 50 kmph at times on the western slopes of the Central hills. It said cyclone Arnab, a very severe cyclonic storm about 890 km north-east of Kankesanthurai, is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka.
- What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave, again at your first stop, and again if rain turns heavy. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.
If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
What should you check before you book?
- The card on the day: it has no last-updated date.
- The total: ask the counter for the full amount, passengers and bags included, and tolls if any.
- Your drop point: Ella is a small town, and a hotel outside it can mean extra kilometres at Rs 130 each.
- Daylight: a 4-hour drive plus stops is easier to do before dark.
- Cash and data: see our Colombo airport arrival guide for the airport steps, SIMs and money.

A straight drive is about 4 hours with no traffic, which is long after a flight. You can break it at Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Haputale or Bandarawela. We give the card rates for several of these so you can compare. Choose by how tired you are, not by the fare alone.
