South coast to Ella: transport options
How to get from Mirissa, Galle, Weligama, Matara or Tangalle to Ella: road distances and times for each beach, official NTC bus fares for the Matara to Badulla and Bandarawela routes, why there is no train, and stops worth breaking the drive for. Checked 23 October 2026.

How do you get from the south coast to Ella?
Quick answer: Go by road. There is no train between the south coast and Ella, because the coast line and the hill country line only meet in Colombo. From Mirissa it is about 176 km and just under 3 hours of driving with no traffic. A private car is the simplest option, and there are NTC bus routes from Matara toward Badulla and Bandarawela.
How far is Ella from each south coast beach?
These are OpenStreetMap driving routes to Ella town, with no traffic, checked 23 October 2026:
| From | Distance to Ella | Time with no traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Tangalle | 138 km | 2 h 25 min |
| Matara | 168 km | 2 h 45 min |
| Mirissa | 176 km | 2 h 54 min |
| Weligama | 178 km | 2 h 51 min |
| Unawatuna | 198 km | 3 h 5 min |
| Galle Fort | 199 km | 3 h 7 min |
| Tissamaharama | 89 km | 1 h 41 min |
Tangalle saves about 38 km on Mirissa. If you are planning the whole loop, our hill country and south coast 8-day itinerary has every leg.
Is there a train from Mirissa or Galle to Ella?
No. The Sri Lanka Railways fare table shows the coast line running south from Colombo Fort to Matara and Beliatta. Ella is on the Main Line, 271.59 km from Colombo Fort through the hills. To go by train you would have to go back to Colombo and then up the Main Line, which is not a practical route.
The Main Line has also been disrupted in 2026. Before planning any rail leg in the hills, check our Kandy to Ella train status and Nanu Oya to Ella train guide.
Can you take a bus from the south coast to Ella?
The NTC fare lists, effective 6 July 2026, include these routes from the south and towards the hills:
| NTC route | From and to | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| 31-2 | Matara to Badulla | Rs 989 |
| 31 | Matara to Bandarawela | Rs 930 |
| 31-1 | Matara to Nuwara Eliya | Rs 1,173 (normal), Rs 1,760 (semi-luxury) |
| 32-7 | Galle to Kataragama | Rs 767 |
| EX 1-74/31-2 | Makumbura to Badulla (expressway) | Rs 2,700 |
The NTC lists give the start and end of each route, not the stops in between. Ella is between the coast and Badulla, but ask the conductor at Matara whether your bus goes through Ella before you board. Buses are cheap but slow on the hill roads, and you have to carry your own bags on and off.
Is a car, the bus or a mix best?
| Option | Best for | Downsides |
|---|---|---|
| Private car with driver | Families, luggage, stops on the way | Most expensive; agree the price first |
| Direct bus from Matara (31-2 or 31) | Low budget, light bags | Ask whether it stops in Ella; slow and crowded |
| Bus to Tissamaharama, then on | Breaking the trip with a safari | Two days instead of one |
| Overnight in Wellawaya or Tissamaharama | A gentler drive in the wet months | Adds a night |
Where can you stop between the coast and Ella?
The road climbs to Ella through Wellawaya, at the foot of the hills. These stops are on or close to that route:

|---|---|---|---|
| Tissamaharama | Base for national park safaris | 89 km from Ella | See our Tissamaharama page |

When is the best time to make the trip?
The coast and the hills have different dry seasons. These are WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Galle (coast) and Badulla (the nearest station to Ella):

February and March are fairly dry at both. October and November are wet at both, so allow extra time on hill roads, and check landslide warnings from the Disaster Management Centre. Our Kandy to Ella by road guide explains how to read those warnings.
What should you sort out before you leave the coast?
- Book the car the day before and agree the price and stops in writing.
- Leave early. Hill roads are slower than the OSRM times, and afternoon rain is common in the wet months.
- Carry cash for bus fares, Buduruwagala tickets and snacks on the way.
- Plan the return. If you are flying out, Ella to Colombo airport is a long day. Our getting around guide compares the options.
