How do you get from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya? (Checked 28 October 2026)

Quick answer: By road it is about 158 to 167 km and 3 hours 3 minutes to 3 hours 10 minutes with no traffic, from Colombo Fort, on our two OpenStreetMap samples of 28 October 2026. The National Transport Commission lists a direct bus, route 79 from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya, at Rs 844 normal, Rs 1,266 semi-luxury and Rs 1,619 air-conditioned luxury. That table gives no times and no stops, so we have no timetable to quote. It is a hill road in a wet month, so check the weather the day you go.

Our Nuwara Eliya destination page explains what the town is for. This page is about getting there from Colombo city. Our Ella versus Nuwara Eliya guide helps if you are still choosing between the two hill towns.

What do the two road routes look like?

SampleDistanceTime with no trafficRoads named by the map
Route 1157.7 kmAbout 3 h 3 minAvissawella Road (B435 and AB10), the A4 High Level Road, then the A7 through Yatiyantota, Hatton and Talawakelle to Nanu Oya Road
Route 2167.0 kmAbout 3 h 10 minThe A1 Colombo to Kandy Road (about 31 km), the B445 through Nittambuwa and Urapola to Ruwanwella (about 28 km), then the same A7 climb

Route 1 is 9.3 km shorter and 7 minutes quicker. Both routes join the A7 and share the last long climb, 38 km on the Gingathena Road, then 19 km on the Hatton Road, 15 km on the Talawakelle Road and the last 16 km on the Nanu Oya Road. The first part is different, so a driver has a choice of road, and on a landslide day that choice may matter more than 9 km. Our Sri Lanka map and distances guide compares the long legs on the island.

The map does not show how steep or slow the A7 climb is. We give a floor, not an estimate. Allow more, and ask your driver how long they expect it to take on the day.

What does the direct bus cost?

The NTC inter-provincial table lists route 79 from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya, with one row and three fare classes.

RouteFrom and toNormalSemi-luxuryAir-conditioned luxury
79Colombo to Nuwara EliyaRs 844Rs 1,266Rs 1,619

The semi-luxury fare is Rs 422 more than normal, and air-conditioned luxury is Rs 775 more. Those differences are our arithmetic. The table lists route ends only, with no stops and no times. We found no official timetable and no seat reservation source for route 79, so we cannot tell you where it leaves in Colombo, how often it runs or when the last one goes. Ask at the bus stand, and ask the conductor if the bus stops in the town centre or on the main road.

There are other rows that end in Nuwara Eliya, but none from Colombo. For example, route 31-1 runs from Matara to Nuwara Eliya at Rs 1,173 normal and Rs 1,760 semi-luxury, and route 311-2 runs from Nuwara Eliya to Welimada at Rs 177. They do not help you from Colombo, but they show the table has the town as a route end.

Is Nuwara Eliya a day trip from Colombo?

On the arithmetic it is a very long day. The drive alone is about 3 hours 3 minutes each way with no traffic, so about 6 hours 6 minutes before you have seen anything, and the bus table gives no journey time. Most people stay at least one night. Our Nanu Oya to Nuwara Eliya guide explains that Nanu Oya is the station for Nuwara Eliya, about 8 km away by road, and covers the transfer. Newswire and the Daily Mirror reported on 25 October 2026 that train services between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola were suspended until further notice. The Sri Lanka Railways website did not load on 28 October 2026, so we could not confirm train times or any restart, and this page gives no train times or fares.

When is the wet season on this road?

Our hill country altitude and weather guide reuses the World Meteorological Organization 1991 to 2020 normals from our Ella versus Nuwara Eliya guide. Nuwara Eliya averages 246.6 mm in October and 226.4 mm in November, against 132.4 to 168.3 mm a month from June to August and 72.2 to 115.6 mm from January to March. That is a long-term average and not a forecast. The same guide gives the town as about 1,868 m high, about 800 m above Ella, so expect it to be cooler than Colombo. It does mean that late October is a time to check the day's weather before you go, and to leave early rather than late.

  • Pick-up and drop. Give the exact pick-up place in Colombo and your Nuwara Eliya hotel's name or a map pin.
  • Price and what it covers. Ask if tolls, the driver's food and a night's stay are in it, if the trip is one way.
  • Route. Ask which road the driver will use and why.

What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 28 October 2026)

  • Landslide warning: the Disaster Management Centre's early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, prepared with the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It put Level 3 (Red) on Norwood and Ambagamuwa Korale in Nuwara Eliya district, Level 2 (Amber) on all 11 Kegalle district areas (including Ruwanwella and Yatiyanthota) and on Kotmale West and Kotmale East in Nuwara Eliya district, and Level 1 (Yellow) on Nuwara Eliya and Thalawakele and on Seethawaka in Colombo district. Both of our routes pass through Kegalle district and then climb the A7 through Nuwara Eliya district.
  • Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 expected several spells of showers in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, and strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times over the western slopes of the central hills.
  • What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.

If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
