Quick answer: By road it is about 54 km and 1 hour 7 minutes with no traffic, on our OpenStreetMap sample of 28 October 2026. The route goes through Bandarawela and Welimada and finishes on the A5. We found no official bus row from Ella to Nuwara Eliya. The one official fare we can quote is for the last part: route 311-2, Nuwara Eliya to Welimada, at Rs 177 normal. This is a short hop between two hill towns that people often compare. Our Ella versus Nuwara Eliya guide helps you decide how many nights to give each. This page covers the move itself.

What does the road look like?
The sample returned one route of 53.9 km. The roads are named as the map names them.
| Stage | Road named by the map | About how far |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving Ella | A23 Wellawaya to Ella Road | About 3 km |
| Towards Bandarawela | A16 Badulla to Bandarawela Road | About 8 km |
| The middle stretch | B44 Bandarawela to Welimada Road | About 17 km |
| Into the high hills | A5 Nuwara Eliya to Badulla Road | About 19 km |
| Final approach | A5 Badulla Road | About 4 km |
Those stage lengths are rounded from the map's own steps. The B44 is the longest single stretch, and the A5 is the last road before Nuwara Eliya. The map names the A5 as the Nuwara Eliya to Badulla Road. We have no source on road surface, speed or bends on either road, so we give no estimate beyond the no-traffic figure.
Why is this different from the 55 km on our map guide?
Our Sri Lanka map and distances guide lists Nuwara Eliya to Ella at 55 km and 1 hour 9 minutes, from an OpenStreetMap sample of 24 October 2026, driven from Nuwara Eliya. This page gives 53.9 km and 1 hour 7 minutes for Ella to Nuwara Eliya. Different start points, end points and direction can move the result by a kilometre or two. Treat both as "about 54 to 55 km and about 1 hour 10 minutes with no traffic".
Is there a bus?
The NTC table has no row from Ella to Nuwara Eliya, and no row from Ella to Welimada. One row we found that covers part of the road is route 311-2 from Nuwara Eliya to Welimada. The table also lists route 31-1 from Matara to Nuwara Eliya, at Rs 1,173 normal and Rs 1,760 semi-luxury. It does not say which road it takes, so we cannot say that it passes Ella, and we do not use it.
| Route | From and to | Normal fare |
|---|---|---|
| 311-2 | Nuwara Eliya to Welimada | Rs 177 |
The map names the B44 as the Bandarawela to Welimada Road, and the A5 stretch after it is about 23 km, so on our route Welimada is where the B44 ends and the last part of the trip begins. We cannot say that the bus follows the same road. The row gives no times, and it does not tell you how to get from Ella to Welimada. Do not add a fare to it. We have no fare for the first part from the official table. If you try the bus, ask at Ella and Bandarawela what changes you would need, how long each wait is, and what the total fare is. Allow for a change at Bandarawela or Welimada, because the table lists route ends only.
For a car or tuk-tuk, no official tariff exists on our sources. Agree the price in writing before you start.
How different are the two towns?
Our hill country altitude and weather guide gives Ella at about 1,041 m and Nuwara Eliya at about 1,868 m. That is a climb of about 800 m in 54 km. The guide uses Bandarawela, about 12 km from Ella by road, as the weather station for Ella.
| Measure | Bandarawela (for Ella) | Nuwara Eliya |
|---|---|---|
| Station height | 1,226 m | 1,894 m |
| Mean daily high | 25.3 C | 20.2 C |
| Mean daily low | 16.7 C | 12.2 C |
| Mean temperature | 21.0 C | 16.2 C |
| October rain | 347.1 mm | 246.6 mm |
| November rain | 338.1 mm | 226.4 mm |
These are long-term averages, not a forecast. Two things follow. First, the mean temperature drops about 5 C (21.0 C to 16.2 C), and the mean daily low drops about 4.5 C. Second, October and November are wet at both places, and Bandarawela is wetter than Nuwara Eliya in those two months. The same guide says Ella's side is the drier choice from June to August and Nuwara Eliya is drier from January to March.
If your plan includes Horton Plains, the park has its own rules and access to check, and our Nuwara Eliya page says to confirm the entrance, transport and weather before you commit to an early start.
Is this a day trip?
On the arithmetic you could go one way in about 1 hour 7 minutes with no traffic, which is about 2 hours 14 minutes for the round trip. That ignores traffic, rain and time at the other end. If you are moving bases, our Nuwara Eliya destination page helps you plan the stay. For a trip from the capital to Nuwara Eliya, see our Colombo to Nuwara Eliya guide.
| If this is you | Pick | Why |

| You want the lowest cost | Ask about the bus, with the changes | The official table gives only the last part |
| You have a fixed arrival time | A car and driver | The only no-traffic time we have is for the road |
| The forecast is bad | Wait or leave early | The route ends about 800 m higher than it starts |
