The sums are ours. The table lists route ends only, with no stops and no times. We found no official timetable and no seat reservation source for either leg. The change at Kurunegala is the weak point: the tables do not say where the second bus leaves, how often it runs, or when the last one goes. Ask a conductor. If you plan to arrive on the same day, start in the morning and ask at Kurunegala about the last bus to Sigiriya before you board the first.

If you want to see Dambulla on the way, route 549 gets you there for Rs 276 from Kurunegala. Our Sigiriya versus Dambulla guide explains which base suits you, and our Dambulla destination page covers the town.

Can you take the train to Sigiriya?

We have not checked train times for this page, so we give no times, no fares and no claim about whether any train is running. Our Colombo airport to Sigiriya guide reports that no train goes to Sigiriya itself and that Habarana is the nearest station on the Railways fare table it cites. It also notes that Habarana is about 13 km from Sigiriya by road. Check the Sri Lanka Railways site and ask at the station for the day you travel, and plan the last leg by road.

What should you ask before you book?

  • Pick-up and drop. Give the exact pick-up place in Colombo and your Sigiriya hotel's name or a map pin.
  • Price and what it covers. Ask for the total, and ask if the expressway toll is in it.
  • Stops. Ask if a stop is included, and if waiting time is charged.
  • Last bus. If you take the bus, ask where the last bus leaves Kurunegala for Sigiriya.
  • Luggage. Say how many bags you have.

What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 28 October 2026)

  • Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, published by the Disaster Management Centre, is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It puts Level 2 (Amber) on Attanagalla in Gampaha district and on Kurunegala, and Level 1 (Yellow) on Narammala, Alawwa and Mawathagama in Kurunegala district. Our road sample uses the A1 and the A6 through Gampaha and Kurunegala districts, going by the road names OSRM returned. It does not list Matale district, where Sigiriya is.
  • Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 said the influence of cyclone Arnab on Sri Lanka's weather has gradually weakened as the storm makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh, India. It expected several spells of showers in the Western Province and strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times in the North-central and North-western provinces.
  • What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.

If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
