Colombo Airport to Trincomalee
Colombo airport to Trincomalee: the airport's fixed-fare card rate of Rs 38,016, about 236 km on our road sample, NTC bus route 49 fares and when to break the journey. Checked 28 October 2026.

How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Trincomalee? (Checked 28 October 2026)
Quick answer: On the airport's own fixed-fare card, read on 28 October 2026, TRINCOMALEE is Rs 38,016 for the air-conditioned taxi. The road is about 236 km and 4 hours 19 minutes with no traffic on our map sample, so plan for a long day. The cheapest way is a bus from Colombo: the National Transport Commission lists route 49, Colombo to Trincomalee, at Rs 1,125 for a normal bus. We found no direct airport bus and no published timetable.
Trincomalee is far from Bandaranaike International Airport, much farther than the south coast beaches or Kandy. That changes the planning. The question is not only what it costs, but whether you should do it in one go after a night flight.
| Option | Price | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport taxi counter, air-conditioned | Rs 38,016 (card line TRINCOMALEE) | About 4 h 19 min with no traffic (our OSRM sample) | Airport Taxi Service page |
| Bus 187 to Colombo Fort, then NTC route 49 | Rs 325 plus Rs 1,125 normal, Rs 1,688 semi-luxury or Rs 2,147 air-conditioned luxury | Not listed in the tables | Airport luxury bus page and NTC fare table |
| Uber or PickMe | Shown in the app | Check in the app | Airport transport page |
The two bus legs add up to Rs 1,450 on normal buses, Rs 2,013 on the semi-luxury fare and Rs 2,472 on the air-conditioned luxury fare. That sum is our own arithmetic. The tables do not say where route 49 leaves Colombo, so we cannot tell you if it starts at the same place where bus 187 stops.
What is the road route and how long does it take?
We sampled one route from the airport terminal area to the middle of Trincomalee on 28 October 2026. OpenStreetMap routing gave 236.4 km and about 4 hours 19 minutes with no traffic. It leaves the airport on local roads, joins the Central Expressway (E04) for about 40 km, then follows the A6 north through Kurunegala, Dambulla and Habarana for roughly 158 km. The last stretch is the A6 east of Habarana.
| Part of the sample | About how far | Road named by the map |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to the expressway | About 31 km | Local roads (B208, B111 and B324) |
| Central Expressway | About 40 km | E04 |
| Expressway end to Dambulla area | About 53 km | A6 |
| Dambulla area to Habarana | About 21 km | A6 |
| Habarana to Trincomalee | About 84 km | A6 |
These are the map's rounded stretches, with pieces under 3 km left out, not a promise about the path any driver will take. Real trips take longer because of traffic, villages on the A6, stops and rain. We did not sample an alternative route, because the map returned only one.
If you land in the morning, the drive fits in daylight. If you land late, a four-hour road after a long flight is a real fatigue risk. You can ask the airport taxi desk about timing on +94 11 226 3096.
What does the airport taxi card say about Trincomalee?
On the AASL fixed-fare card, as read on 28 October 2026, the line TRINCOMALEE is Rs 38,016 for the air-conditioned taxi. The card has no day or night rate, no passenger limit and no luggage limit that we could read. The card shows no last-updated date, does not say how many passengers or bags a rate covers, and does not say if expressway tolls are included. The airport page adds two charges: Rs 130 for each extra kilometre beyond the destination you asked for, and Rs 300 for each extra drop within the agreed journey.
Here is how Trincomalee compares with other card lines we read on the same day. These are card lines, not an official price list for the road in between.
| Card line | Rate (air-conditioned) |
|---|---|
| DAMBULLA | Rs 24,192 |
| HABARANA | Rs 27,000 |
| ANURADHAPURA | Rs 30,240 |
| POLONNARUWA | Rs 34,020 |
| TRINCOMALEE | Rs 38,016 |
| BATTICALOA | Rs 41,796 |
On our map distance, Rs 38,016 over 236.4 km is about Rs 161 for each kilometre. That is our arithmetic, not a rate the airport publishes. The card's Wellawaya line is also Rs 38,016, so identical rates on different routes are normal on this card.
The card lists only TRINCOMALEE. It has no separate lines for the beaches north of the city. If your hotel is at Uppuveli or Nilaveli, ask the counter to name the rate to your exact address before you pay, because the Rs 130 for each extra kilometre can apply beyond the requested destination. Our Nilaveli guide and the Trincomalee destination page help you pick the area first.
Is there a bus from Colombo airport to Trincomalee?
We found no direct airport bus. The airport lists bus 187 to Colombo Fort (Rs 325 a person, about 50 minutes, 24 hours a day, boarding at the Departure Terminal Outer Porch) and a bus to the Makumbura Multimodal Centre (Rs 410 a person). From Colombo, the NTC fare table lists these Colombo to Trincomalee rows:
| NTC route | From and to | Normal | Semi-luxury | Air-conditioned luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 49 | Colombo to Trincomalee | Rs 1,125 | Rs 1,688 | Rs 2,147 |
The three fare columns follow the table's own headings: non-air-conditioned normal service, semi-luxury and air-conditioned luxury. The table lists route ends only. It gives no stops, no departure times and no seat reservation source. We found no official timetable we could read, so ask at the bus stand in Colombo before you travel. We also cannot say how long the bus ride takes. Our map sample is for a car with no traffic, and a bus that stops at towns will be slower.
Should you go straight to Trincomalee or break the journey?
For most people arriving by air, a break is kinder. The map route passes through the Cultural Triangle, so Dambulla, Habarana or Anuradhapura are natural places to sleep. Our Dambulla destination page and Habarana page explain what is there. Our Cultural Triangle region guide shows how the sites connect.
| If this is you | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You land in the morning and want the beach tonight | Taxi straight through | About 4 h 19 min with no traffic, plus stops |
| You land at night or after a long flight | Sleep near the airport or in the Cultural Triangle first | The long A6 section is better in daylight |
| You are on a tight budget and have light bags | Bus 187, then route 49 | Rs 1,450 on normal buses by our sum |
| You want to see the ancient cities on the way | Break at Dambulla or Habarana | Both are on the A6 in our sample |
What should you ask before you book the Trincomalee transfer?
- Passengers and bags. The card does not say how many people or bags the rate covers.
- Tolls. The card does not say if the expressway toll is included.
- Your exact stop. Say Uppuveli, Nilaveli or the town, not just Trincomalee.
- Waiting and stops. Ask if a lunch stop is allowed and if waiting time is charged.
- The way back. The card is for the airport counter. It does not say if the same rate applies on a trip to the airport.
Our getting around guide has a longer checklist for hiring a car and driver.
What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 28 October 2026)
- Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, published by the Disaster Management Centre, is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It puts Level 2 (Amber) on Kurunegala and Attanagalla, and Level 1 (Yellow) on Narammala, Alawwa and Mawathagama in Kurunegala district. Our road sample uses the A6 through Kurunegala district, going by the road names OSRM returned. It does not list Trincomalee, Anuradhapura or Matale districts.
- Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 said the influence of cyclone Arnab on Sri Lanka's weather has gradually weakened as the storm makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh, India. It expected strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee district.
- What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern and our east coast region guide covers the area.
If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
