Kandy to Sigiriya
Kandy to Sigiriya and back: about 89 km each way, the A9 route, Dambulla on the way, the nearest NTC bus row and a day trip time budget. Checked 28 October 2026.

How far is Kandy from Sigiriya, both ways? (Checked 28 October 2026)
Quick answer: About 89 km and about 1 hour 48 minutes each way by road with no traffic, on our OpenStreetMap samples of 28 October 2026: 89.1 km and 1 hour 48 minutes from Kandy to Sigiriya, and 89.0 km and 1 hour 47 minutes the other way. Almost all of it is on one road, the A9 Kandy to Jaffna Road, then a short stretch on the A6 and the B162. There is no direct bus row from Kandy to Sigiriya in the official fare table, so we cannot quote a bus fare for the trip. A day trip is possible on the road arithmetic, with about 3 hours 36 minutes of driving before you have seen anything.
This one page covers both directions, so it also answers "Sigiriya to Kandy". Our Kandy destination page and Sigiriya destination page cover the two towns, and our Sigiriya place guide covers the rock.
| Direction | Distance | Time with no traffic | Roads named by the map |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kandy to Sigiriya | 89.1 km | About 1 h 48 min | A9 Matale Road, A9 Kandy to Jaffna Road, A6 Dambulla to Habarana Road, B162 Sigiriya Road |
| Sigiriya to Kandy | 89.0 km | About 1 h 47 min | The same four roads in reverse |
The map found only one sensible road each way, so there is no second route to compare. The stretches over 4 km were 5 km and 8 km on the A9 Matale Road out of Kandy, then 48 km on the A9 Kandy to Jaffna Road, then 6 km on the A6 and 9 km on the B162 into Sigiriya.
Is Dambulla on the way?
On the A9 and A6 the answer looks like yes. We ran the same tool from Kandy to Dambulla. It gave 72.2 km and 1 hour 25 minutes on the shorter of two routes, and 74.8 km and 1 hour 29 minutes on the other. Sigiriya is 89.1 km, so it is about 17 km past Dambulla on our sample. That is our arithmetic from two map results, not a measured stop. If you want the cave temple and the rock in one trip, Dambulla can fit on the way in or out. Our Dambulla destination page covers the town and our Dambulla cave temple guide covers the site. Our Sigiriya versus Dambulla guide explains which one suits a night's stay.
What does a bus from Kandy to Sigiriya cost?
We found no row in the NTC inter-provincial table that goes from Kandy (Mahanuwara) to Sigiriya, or from Kandy to Dambulla. The tables list route ends only, with no stops and no times, so we do not guess a fare. These are the nearest rows, all as effective from 6 July 2026.
| Route | From and to | Normal | Air-conditioned luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43 | Kandy (Mahanuwara) to Anuradhapura | Rs 606 | Rs 1,178 |
| 549/499 | Kurunegala to Sigiriya | Rs 353 | Not listed |
| 549 | Kurunegala to Dambulla | Rs 276 | Not listed |
Route 43 runs from Kandy to Anuradhapura, which is further north than Sigiriya. The table does not say if it stops at Dambulla or at the turn for Sigiriya, so do not assume that it does. The Rs 606 is the end-to-end fare, so ask the conductor what you will pay to get off at Dambulla or at the Sigiriya junction. We found no official timetable and no seat reservation source for any of these routes. If you take the bus, expect to finish with a local ride or a tuk-tuk, and agree a price before you set off, because there is no official tuk-tuk tariff.
We have not checked train times for this page, so we make no claim about trains.
Can you do Kandy to Sigiriya as a day trip?
On the road arithmetic, yes, but it is a long day. Driving alone takes about 1 hour 48 minutes each way with no traffic, so about 3 hours 36 minutes before any stop. This table shows when you would reach Sigiriya if you leave Kandy early. The times are our arithmetic, with no traffic and no stops.
| You leave Kandy at | You reach Sigiriya at | If you leave Sigiriya at 15:00, you reach Kandy at |
|---|---|---|
| 06:00 | 07:48 | 16:47 |
| 07:00 | 08:48 | 16:47 |
| 08:00 | 09:48 | 16:47 |
The last column does not depend on when you left, only on when you leave Sigiriya. Check the opening hours and the ticket price on our Sigiriya place guide before you decide how long to stay, because the rock takes time and the hours decide the day. If you can, stay a night. Our Sigiriya versus Dambulla guide helps you choose a base, and our Cultural Triangle heritage itinerary shows how the sites fit together.

- Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 said the influence of cyclone Arnab on Sri Lanka's weather has gradually weakened as the storm makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh, India. It expected several spells of showers in Kandy district and strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times on the western slopes of the Central hills and in the North-central Province.
- What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.
If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
