Why does Ella's December rain figure change from site to site?

Quick answer: Ella has no weather station of its own, so we use the two nearest official stations on the 1991 to 2020 WMO normals: Bandarawela (1,226 m, about 12 km away by road) and Badulla (670 m). In December they give 231.3 mm and 269.9 mm of rain, and rain on 19.5 and 17.0 days. Ella sits at about 1,041 m, between them, so a working range of about 230 to 270 mm is our own reading, not an official Ella figure. Days are mild at 22.7 C (73 F) on the higher station, nights are cool, and the Department of Meteorology expects December 2026 to run slightly wetter than normal in Uva Province.

Different sites quote different numbers for Ella in December. That is because Ella has no official station, so each site picks a different nearby point, district or model.

We do not invent an Ella number. We show the two nearest official stations side by side and say which one we trust for what.

Ella itself is at about 1,041 m. These are the nearest official points, with Bandarawela higher than Ella and Badulla lower. The gap between the two, about 39 mm, is a fair measure of how much the answer depends on where you stand.

Our December guide quotes a Badulla district average of 318 mm. That is a district-wide average from a different dataset, so it is not the same thing as the station value above. Both say the same thing: December is wet here.

What are the temperatures in Ella in December?

Ella is cooler than the coast and warmer than Nuwara Eliya. The two stations are about 2.9 C apart by day, so Ella should fall between those figures. On both stations, December is the first month after the autumn peak to ease off. At Bandarawela, rain falls from 347.1 mm in October and 338.1 mm in November to 231.3 mm in December. Rain days drop from 24.2 in November to 19.5 in December and 10.3 in February. If your dates are flexible, February is much drier at both stations (96.4 mm and 102.3 mm).

What does the 2026 outlook say for Uva Province?

The Department of Meteorology's consensus outlook, issued 2 October 2026, gives "a higher probability of slightly above-normal rainfall across most parts of the country" for December 2026. Its multi-model ensemble names the Uva Province, along with the Western, Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces, among the places where above-normal December rain is likely. Ella and Badulla district are in Uva.

That leans the odds toward wetter than the normals, not toward a fixed amount. Plan for a wet December and treat a dry spell as a bonus.

What is the weather warning today? (Checked 29 October 2026)

This is a dated snapshot, not a December forecast.

• Rain. The Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 29 October 2026 expected showers or thundershowers at a few places in Uva Province after 1.00 pm.
• Landslides. The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-28-10-2026-1600-35, published by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), is valid from 4 pm on 28 October to 4 pm on 29 October 2026 and lists no area at Level 3 (Red). It does not list Badulla district, where Ella is.
• What to do. Call 117, the DMC hotline, and read the Met bulletin before any walk or drive. We cannot confirm road status. Our hill country region guide has the wider setting.

How should you plan the Ella walks around the rain?

The two best-known outings from Ella are on foot, and each has its own rule. Neither can be planned from rainfall averages alone.

• Little Adam's Peak. Our place guide says not to rely on an "easy" or "under one hour" label, because the path, the weather, your shoes and the daylight change the walk. Check the path locally, check the forecast, and leave enough daylight for the return. After rain, expect slippery ground.
• Nine Arch Bridge. It is a railway bridge. Choose a lawful viewpoint, stay off the track and do not plan around a train time. This page does not cover train times or train status, so check them with Sri Lanka Railways if you need them. Our place guide says the visit should still be worth it if no train appears.

The normals have no hourly data, so we cannot say whether December mornings are drier than afternoons. The 29 October forecast expected showers after 1.00 pm in Uva, but that is one day. A sensible habit is to do the outdoor walk early and keep the afternoon flexible, then adjust to the forecast.

What should you pack for Ella in December?

• A waterproof jacket with a hood. Rain days are about 19.5 of 31 at Bandarawela.
• Shoes with grip for wet steps and clay paths.
• A light layer for nights near 15.8 C.
• Quick-dry clothes that you can wash and dry between showers.
• A dry bag for phones and cameras.

Should you choose Ella in December?

Think twice if your trip rests on one dry morning for a viewpoint. At Bandarawela the average December has 8.1 days of 10 mm or more.
