Nuwara Eliya weather in December 2026
Nuwara Eliya in December: station normals for rain, cold nights and rain days, the Met Department's 2026 outlook and a dated 29 October 2026 warning snapshot. Checked 29 October 2026.

What is the weather in Nuwara Eliya in December?
Quick answer: December at Nuwara Eliya is cold and wet, but not the wettest month of the late year: on the 1991 to 2020 WMO normals the station at 1,894 m averages 182.9 mm of rain on 14.9 days. The average high is 19.4 C (67 F) and the average low is 11.5 C (53 F), about 12 C cooler than Colombo. The Department of Meteorology expects December 2026 to be slightly wetter than normal in most of the country, and its model ensemble names Nuwara Eliya district. Pack for rain and nights near 11 C, and keep one spare day.
Here are the long-run averages for the Nuwara Eliya station, which sits at 1,894 m. The town itself is a little lower, at about 1,868 m on our hill country altitude guide.
| What | December at Nuwara Eliya |
|---|---|
| Rain in the month | 182.9 mm |
| Days with 1 mm of rain or more | 14.9 of 31 |
| Days with 10 mm of rain or more | 5.8 |
| Average daytime high | 19.4 C (67 F) |
| Average night low | 11.5 C (53 F) |
| Coldest night recorded in December, 1991 to 2020 | 2.6 C (37 F) |
| Warmest day recorded in December, 1991 to 2020 | 24.0 C (75 F) |
| Wettest single day recorded in December | 109.5 mm |
Rain on 14.9 days of 31 means about every second day has some rain. Only about 5.8 of those days bring 10 mm or more, which is the sort of rain that soaks you on a walk. Most wet days are lighter. The record day of 109.5 mm is a reminder that one storm can be much wetter than the average suggests.
The "days of 10 mm or more" column comes from the same WMO sheet as the other figures. We use it because it separates a showery day from a washout better than the plain rain-day count.
How does December compare with the months around it?
| Month | Rain (mm) | Rain days (1 mm or more) | Days of 10 mm or more | Average high | Average low |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct | 246.6 | 18.9 | 8.2 | 19.7 C (67 F) | 12.6 C (55 F) |
| Nov | 226.4 | 17.6 | 7.0 | 19.8 C (68 F) | 12.3 C (54 F) |
| Dec | 182.9 | 14.9 | 5.8 | 19.4 C (67 F) | 11.5 C (53 F) |
| Jan | 115.6 | 9.5 | 3.5 | 19.9 C (68 F) | 10.4 C (51 F) |
| Feb | 72.7 | 6.7 | 3.0 | 21.0 C (70 F) | 10.2 C (50 F) |
Three things stand out.
- December is the first drier month after the autumn rains. October has 246.6 mm and November 226.4 mm. December drops to 182.9 mm, about 19 per cent below November.
- It is still much wetter than January or February. December has about 1.6 times the rain of January and about 2.5 times the rain of February. If you can choose, late January and February are the drier part of this stretch on the averages.
- The cold deepens through the month. Average lows fall from 12.3 C in November to 11.5 C in December and 10.4 C in January. Daytime highs barely move, staying near 19 to 20 C all winter.
These are averages over 30 years. A given December can be wetter or drier, and the normals do not show which part of the month will be wet.
What does the 2026 outlook say?
On 2 October 2026 the Department of Meteorology issued its consensus outlook for October to December. It says there is "a higher probability of slightly above-normal rainfall across most parts of the country, while near-normal rainfall is expected in the Northern Province during December 2026." The same document says its multi-model ensemble gives above-normal December rain as likely over the Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ampara districts. It links the pattern to a continuing El Nino.
So the outlook leans wetter than the normals above for Nuwara Eliya district. It is a probability for the whole month and it cannot tell you whether 20 December will be dry. Our Sri Lanka in December guide puts this in the island picture, and our monsoon seasons guide explains why the hills get rain in this season.
What is the weather warning today? (Checked 29 October 2026)
This block is a dated snapshot, not a December forecast.
- Rain. The Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 29 October 2026 expected several spells of showers in Nuwara-Eliya district, and in Kandy district and the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces.
- Landslides. The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-28-10-2026-1600-35, published by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), is valid from 4 pm on 28 October to 4 pm on 29 October 2026 and lists no area at Level 3 (Red). In Nuwara Eliya district it puts Norwood and Ambagamuwa Korale at Level 2 (Amber), both moved down one level from Red, and Kothmale West and Kotmale East at Level 1 (Yellow). The Nuwara Eliya division itself is not listed. A lower level is not an all clear.
- What to do. Call 117, the DMC hotline, and read the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. We cannot confirm road status. Our hill country region guide has the wider setting.
What should you pack for Nuwara Eliya in December?
The numbers point to a short, practical list.
- A warm layer for every evening. The average low is 11.5 C (53 F), and the coldest December night in the record was 2.6 C (37 F). Wear a fleece or jumper, and bring a hat if you plan an early start.
- A waterproof jacket, not just an umbrella. With rain on about every second day and wind forecast at times on the western slopes, a hooded shell works better.
- Shoes that can get wet. The record shows 5.8 days a month of 10 mm or more. Grippy shoes matter on tea estate paths and on stone steps.
- A dry bag or zip bags for phones and documents.
- Layers, not one thick coat. The daytime high is 19.4 C (67 F), so it feels mild when the cloud lifts and cold when it settles.
Our what to wear guide covers the island-wide list. We did not check hotel heating, so ask your hotel whether rooms have heaters or extra blankets before you book.
Is a Horton Plains morning realistic in December?
Horton Plains National Park is the usual reason to be up early near Nuwara Eliya, and the walk to World's End is the main route. Our park pages say that visibility can change quickly, that no departure time guarantees a view, and that you must confirm current entry, route conditions and hours before you travel. We repeat that here and make no promise about views.
What the normals add is a risk picture. The park is at about 2,100 m on our altitude guide, higher than the Nuwara Eliya station at 1,894 m, so expect it to be at least as cold and wet as the figures above. If the forecast shows heavy rain, treat a Horton Plains morning as a day to move, not a day to force.
When do these numbers help, and when do they not?
Use the normals to decide whether to come and what to bring. Use the forecast on the day to decide what to do. In practice:
- Book flexible rooms if you can, so a bad forecast does not cost a night.
- Keep one indoor option in the plan, such as a tea factory visit or a long lunch. We did not check which factories are open, so ask locally.
- Do the long drive in daylight and check the Met bulletin and DMC warnings the evening before.
- Compare with Ella. If you are choosing between the two hill bases, our Ella or Nuwara Eliya guide compares them, and our Ella December weather guide gives the same month for the lower, warmer town. Both are wet in December, and Ella is warmer.
For the town itself, see the Nuwara Eliya destination guide.
Who should come in December, and who should wait?
Come in December if you want cool, green hills, you do not mind rain on about half the days, and you can keep your plan loose. The cold is a feature if you are travelling from the heat of the coast.
Wait for late January or February if you want the best chance of dry walking. On the averages, January has about 63 per cent of December's rain and February about 40 per cent. Nights are colder then, though, with an average low of 10.2 C in February.
Skip it if your plan depends on a clear view at a set time, or if the DMC lists the district at a higher warning level for your travel days.
