How far is Sigiriya from Ella, and which way is quicker? (Checked 28 October 2026)
Quick answer: On our OpenStreetMap sample of 28 October 2026, the direct drive is 183.4 km and 3 hours 54 minutes with no traffic, on back roads through Elahera, Hasalaka and Mahiyanganaya. The other plan is to go by Kandy: Sigiriya to Kandy is 89.0 km and 1 hour 47 minutes on the same tool, and our Kandy to Ella by road guide gives about 134 km and 2 hours 41 minutes from Kandy, so about 223 km and 4 hours 28 minutes with no traffic and no change time. There is no direct bus row from Sigiriya to Ella in the official fare table. The only official fare we can quote for part of the trip is Kandy to Badulla, route 21, at Rs 590 normal.
Figures for this trip vary a lot between websites, and that is because there are two different ways to do it. This page gives both, with the road names from the map, so you can see why.
| Option | Distance | Time with no traffic | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct by road (Elahera, Hasalaka, Mahiyanganaya) | 183.4 km | About 3 h 54 min | Our OSRM sample |
| By Kandy, drive all the way | About 223 km (89.0 km plus about 134 km) | About 4 h 28 min plus any stop | Our OSRM sample and our Kandy to Ella by road guide |
| By Kandy, bus for the second part | Kandy to Badulla, route 21: Rs 590 normal, Rs 885 semi-luxury | Not listed in the tables | NTC fare table |
| Taxi or car and driver | No official price list | As the car options above | Agree a price in writing |
What does the direct road look like?
| Stretch | Road named by the map | About |
|---|---|---|
| Out of Sigiriya | B162 Sigiriya Road, then the A6 Dambulla to Habarana Road | 9 km and 6 km |
| East from the A6 | B615 Dambulla to Bakamuna to Kalagahawela Road | 32 km |
| Past Elahera | B312 Elahera to Pallegama to Hettipola Road | About 29 km in three pieces |
| Past Hasalaka | B484 Hasalaka to Hettipola Road | About 22 km in three pieces |
| A short stretch on the A26 | Kandy to Mahiyanganaya to Padiyatalawa Road | 5 km |
| Towards Mahiyanganaya | C602 Pangaragammana to Loggal Oya Road | 10 km |
| South from Mahiyanganaya | B36 Badulla to Mahiyanganaya Road | About 37 km in two pieces |
| The last stretch | A16 Badulla to Bandarawela Road | 10 km |
Only stretches over 4 km are listed, so the table does not add to the total. Most of the route is on roads with B and C numbers, which are secondary roads, not the main A-class highways. The map does not tell you the road surface or how busy it is. That is why we give the time as a floor, not an estimate. Ask a driver who knows the road, and ask the hotel in Ella what time they expect you.
What about going by Kandy?
Our sample puts Sigiriya to Kandy at 89.0 km and 1 hour 47 minutes, on the A6 and the A9 Kandy to Jaffna Road. Our Kandy to Sigiriya guide covers that leg in both directions. The second part is our Kandy to Ella by road guide, which gives about 134 km and 2 hours 41 minutes on the same tool, checked 23 October 2026.
Adding them gives about 223 km and 4 hours 28 minutes with no traffic. That sum is our arithmetic. It leaves out any wait in Kandy, a meal and a change of vehicle. The direct road is about 40 km shorter and about 34 minutes quicker on paper. The Kandy plan has one benefit for a bus traveller: the fare table has a row for the second part, and none for the direct road.
The NTC table lists route 21 from Kandy (Mahanuwara) to Badulla at Rs 590 normal and Rs 885 semi-luxury. Those are end-to-end fares and Ella is not named, so confirm the fare to Ella with the conductor. We found no sourced fare for Sigiriya to Kandy, because the table has no row for it. The nearest rows are route 43 from Kandy to Anuradhapura at Rs 606 normal, and route 549/499 from Kurunegala to Sigiriya at Rs 353. We do not know the stops on either, so do not plan around them.
Is there a bus from Sigiriya to Ella?
We found no direct bus. The tables list route ends only, with no stops and no times, and none of them runs from Sigiriya to Ella. A bus plan means a change, and probably more than one. We found no official timetable and no seat reservation source for any leg. If you want to go by bus, plan to spend the whole day, ask your hotel in Sigiriya what leaves from the nearest town in the morning, and ask the conductor at each change whether the next bus stops in Ella. We have not checked train times for this page, so we make no claim about trains.
When will you arrive if you leave early?
This table is our arithmetic on the no-traffic times, with no stop. Real arrival will be later.
| You leave Sigiriya at | Direct, earliest arrival | By Kandy by road, earliest arrival |
|---|---|---|
| 06:00 | 09:54 | 10:28 |
| 07:00 | 10:54 | 11:28 |
| 08:00 | 11:54 | 12:28 |
| 09:00 | 12:54 | 13:28 |
The Met Department's forecast on 28 October 2026 expected showers or thundershowers after 1.00 pm at several places in Uva Province, where Ella is. An early start gets you to Ella before the afternoon, which is the main reason to leave in the morning. Our Badulla destination page covers the large town on the same road, and our hill country region guide covers the area around Ella.
Which way should you choose?
| If this is you | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the fewest hours | Direct by car | About 3 h 54 min with no traffic |
| You want fewer back roads | By Kandy | The second part is on a route our guide covers |
| You want the lowest fare | Bus, with changes | Route 21 is Rs 590 normal for Kandy to Badulla |
| You have big bags | Car and driver | Changes with bags are hard work |
What should you ask before you book?
- Which road. Ask which route the driver will use and how long they expect it to take.
- Price and what it covers. Ask for the total in writing, and ask if the driver's return and food are in it.
- Stops. Ask if a stop is included, and if waiting time is charged.
- Drop point. Give the name of your guesthouse in Ella or a map pin.
- Luggage. Say how many bags you have.
What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 28 October 2026)
- Landslide warning: the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) landslide early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, published by the Disaster Management Centre, is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It lists Kandy district areas at Level 2 (Amber) and Level 1 (Yellow), including Medadumbara, Kundasale and Udadumbara at Level 1, and Nuwara Eliya district areas up to Level 3 (Red). It does not list Matale, Badulla or Monaragala districts. If you go by Kandy, check the warning for every district you cross.
- Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 said the influence of cyclone Arnab on Sri Lanka's weather has gradually weakened as the storm makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh, India. It expected several spells of showers in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts and showers or thundershowers at a few places in Uva Province after 1 pm.
- What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern.
If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
