Palm-lined coastal road at golden hour leading toward a distant city skyline, with a tuk-tuk parked at the roadside.

How do you get from the south coast to Colombo?

Quick answer: The expressway bus to Colombo from Matara is the usual public option. The coast line train to Colombo Fort is the slower, cheaper one. A private car or taxi is door to door. From Hiriketiya, the OpenStreetMap road route to Colombo Fort is about 175 km and 2 hours 33 minutes with no traffic, so allow far more. Tangalle has no railway station, so use a bus or car, or go 8 km to Beliatta for the train.

If you are going the other way, from the airport to the coast, read our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide. This page is for the trip back.

These are OpenStreetMap (OSRM) road routes, with no traffic, between the town or station point and Colombo Fort or the airport, checked 24 October 2026. Real journeys take longer.

The NTC table gives the start and end of each route, not the stops, the timetable or the departure times. Confirm at the Tangalle bus stand or with your guesthouse before you plan around a departure. Our Tangalle guide has more on the town.

What does the expressway bus cost?

These are NTC fares effective 6 July 2026. They are full adult fares. Timings are not in the tables.

Two cautions. First, Makumbura is a bus hub outside the city, not Colombo Fort. Second, the routes listed as Colombo are what the NTC names; the exact drop-off point is not in the table, so ask before you board. Our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide explains the same fares from the airport side.

What does the train cost from the south coast to Colombo Fort?

These are fares from Colombo Fort on the Sri Lanka Railways fare table dated July 2022, still the published table on 23 October 2026. The table lists fares from Colombo Fort, so confirm the fare for the return direction at the ticket counter.

On 23 October 2026 the railway's media notices page had no notice about the coast line, as noted on our Colombo to Galle train guide. That is not a promise that every train runs on time. We could not reach the railway website on 24 October 2026, so we cannot give departure times. Check at the station or on the seat reservation site.

To reserve a seat, the railway's guide says to use seatreservation.railway.gov.lk up to 30 days ahead for up to 5 passengers at a time, then collect the ticket at a station with a reservation counter. The guide lists counters at Colombo Fort, Galle, Matara (041 222 2271) and Beliatta (047 312 8188). Our train booking and prices guide explains classes and tickets.

How do you get to the airport from Colombo?

The airport is at Katunayake, north of the city. Our Colombo airport arrival guide lists the airport's route 187 air-conditioned bus between the airport and Colombo Fort at Rs 325 a person, taking about 50 minutes, plus Rs 325 more for baggage over 23 kg. That guide describes boarding at the airport; confirm where the 187 leaves in Colombo before you rely on it. The airport also has an official taxi counter, and ride apps work in the city. We do not quote taxi fares, because none is published.

A train or bus to Colombo Fort, then the 187, is a long day. For an international flight, plan the whole day around the flight, not around the bus.

When should you leave for the airport?

There is no official rule we can cite, and your airline sets its own check-in cut-off, so check that first. Our advice, not an official figure:

  • Treat the no-traffic road time as the minimum, not the plan.
  • October is the wettest month at Galle (344.5 mm on WMO 1991 to 2020 normals, as on our Colombo to Galle train guide), so allow for rain delays.
  • If your flight is in the early morning, sleep nearer Colombo or Negombo the night before.
  • If you have a connecting flight with a strict ticket, do not travel on the same day with a single-seat buffer.

Which option should you pick?

If you wantPickWatch out for
The simplest day with luggagePrivate car or taxiNo tariff, so agree the price in writing
The cheapest public routeNormal bus or 3rd class trainSlow, crowded, no reserved seat on 3rd class
A faster public routeExpressway bus from MataraCheck where it drops you in Colombo
Sea viewsCoast line trainCheck times at the station; no timetable verified
A connecting flight the same dayCar, plus a large bufferDo not trust no-traffic times

What should you check on the day?

  • Notices. The railway's media notices page and your guesthouse for any weather delays.
  • Departure. Ask where the bus or train leaves, not just when.
  • Cash. Carry small notes for buses and 3rd class tickets.
  • Phone. Our eSIM guide compares data options if you need to reach a driver.
  • Tickets. Keep the booking code offline if you reserve a train seat.

Can I take a bus straight to the airport from the south coast?

We found no south coast bus to the airport terminal on the NTC lists. The NTC expressway table has route EX01/EX03 between Matara and Negombo at Rs 1,590, and Negombo is the nearest listed town to the airport. Other plans are a private car, or a bus or train to Colombo and then the airport's route 187 bus, which our airport guides list at Rs 325.

When should I leave the south coast for an international flight?

We do not publish a fixed rule, because check-in cut-offs vary by airline and the road time varies by day. Use the no-traffic road time as a floor, add a large buffer for rain and traffic, and check your airline's check-in time. If the flight is early in the morning, sleeping closer to Colombo or Negombo the night before is the safer plan.
