Buy a local tourist SIM or eSIM at Colombo airport if you can spare a few minutes after landing. Buy an international eSIM before you fly if you want data the moment you land. Roaming needs the least setup, but this page has no sourced roaming prices. Published local and Airalo prices below were checked on the operators' own pages (Dialog and SLT-Mobitel rechecked 14 October 2026; Airalo checked 10 October 2026). This page has no affiliate links.

Airport arrival tips

Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo) is where Dialog, SLT-Mobitel and Airtel say they issue tourist SIMs. Dialog puts two Airport Stores in the arrival lobby right after the customs desk. SLT-Mobitel lists counters in that lobby (and at Mattala and Jaffna airports). Airtel asks you to collect a form at its Bandaranaike counter and hand it in with a passport copy. We found no official opening hours for these counters, so this page does not quote any.

Bring your passport. For a local eSIM, your phone must be unlocked and eSIM-compatible. After you have data, the Colombo airport to Kandy guide covers the official taxi counter and the airport buses onward.

Which eSIM or SIM should I get for Sri Lanka? (Prices checked 10 October 2026)

A local tourist plan is the cheapest published option. Dialog and SLT-Mobitel both sell tourist SIMs and eSIMs, at counters in the arrival lobby of Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo) and online. Their own pages listed (Dialog and SLT-Mobitel rechecked 14 October 2026; Airalo checked 10 October 2026):

  • Dialog: Rs. 1,399 for 20 GB, 30 days (dialog.lk)
  • SLT-Mobitel: Rs. 821 for 15 GB, 7 days, or Rs. 1,540 for 30 GB, 30 days (mobitel.lk)
  • International eSIM (Airalo): from US$ 12.50 for 3 days of unlimited data on the Mobitel network, bought before you fly (airalo.com)

Pick an international eSIM if you want data the moment you land and don't mind paying more; pick a local plan if you can spend a few minutes at the airport counter. Bring your passport either way. This page has no affiliate links.

Best eSIM for tourists in Sri Lanka

For most visitors, a local tourist eSIM from Dialog or SLT-Mobitel is the best value. An international eSIM is the best choice only if you must be online the minute you land. We compared each provider's own page on 17 October 2026. We have no deal with any of them and this page has no affiliate links.

How to choose:

  1. Two weeks, normal use: Dialog's 20 GB plan or SLT-Mobitel's 30 GB plan (Rs. 1,540) costs under US$5. Buy it at the arrival-lobby counter or online before you fly.
  2. You need maps and messages at the airport: buy a short international eSIM at home, then switch to a local plan once you are in town.
  3. One week or less: SLT-Mobitel's 7-day plan is the cheapest published plan we found.
  4. Your phone is locked to your home network: none of the eSIMs above will work. Ask your home operator about roaming instead.

The honest trade-off: a 7-day international eSIM costs about 10 times more than SLT-Mobitel's 7-day local plan, but you skip the airport queue. Coverage depends on the local network each one uses, so check which network a plan runs on before you buy.

Can I buy a SIM card at Colombo airport?

Yes, per the operators' own pages on 10 October 2026:

  • Dialog: "Right after the customs desk in the Arrival lobby, you'll find two Dialog Airport Stores." Staff verify your passport and activate the SIM or eSIM. You can also reserve online and collect at the airport store with your passport and order number.
  • SLT-Mobitel: counters in the arrival lobby at Bandaranaike International Airport, and at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport and Jaffna International Airport, plus any SLT-Mobitel outlet.
  • Airtel: collect an application form at the Airtel counter at Bandaranaike International Airport and hand it in with a passport copy.

We found no official opening hours for these counters, so we don't quote any.

Some older SLT-Mobitel pages list only three plans and leave out Plan 03; the table above follows the best travel SIM page as read on 10 October 2026. Check data with *100#.

Airtel and Hutch

Airtel's tourist SIM page explains the airport process but, when we checked, did not show a fixed tourist bundle price we could quote. Hutch's site lists eSIM and a "Visiting Sri Lanka" section, but its tourist-package page did not load on 10 October 2026, so no Hutch price appears here.

Can I get a local Sri Lankan eSIM?

Yes. Dialog sells a tourist eSIM online through its new connection page and at the airport store. SLT-Mobitel offers eSIMs through its eSIM portal and at its arrival-lobby counter. Your phone must be unlocked and eSIM-compatible.

How do international eSIMs compare?

Airalo's Sri Lanka page, read on 10 October 2026, listed two families of plans (prices in USD):

Airalo plan (network)ValidityDataPrice
Sri Lanka (Mobitel)3 daysUnlimitedUS$ 12.50
Sri Lanka (Mobitel)5 daysUnlimitedUS$ 19.00
Sri Lanka (Mobitel)7 daysUnlimitedUS$ 27.00
Sri Lanka (Mobitel)10 daysUnlimitedUS$ 35.00

Sri Lanka (Hutch)7 days3 GB, 30 mins, 30 SMSUS$ 7.50
Sri Lanka (Hutch)7 days10 GB, 100 mins, 100 SMSUS$ 12.00

The trade-off: you can install it at home and land connected, but per gigabyte it costs more than the local tourist plans above. Unlimited plans usually carry fair-use limits, so read the provider's terms.

What do I need to buy a SIM?

Your passport. SLT-Mobitel says a foreign passport is the only document needed. Dialog verifies your passport before activation. Airtel asks for its application form and a passport copy.

Before you land

Sort your ETA and visa first, then decide on data. A working phone makes it easier to follow the transfer checks in getting around Sri Lanka from Colombo onwards, and you can add the plan to the trip cost guide. Planning your first week? Start with the one-week first visit itinerary.
