How do you get from Ahangama to Hiriketiya?

Quick answer: It is about 47 km by road, roughly 55 minutes in a car with no traffic, along the A2 coast road. A taxi is the simplest way. The cheaper way is to split the trip: train or bus from Ahangama to Matara, then a bus or tuk-tuk east to Hiriketiya. There is no train at Hiriketiya, and not every train stops at Ahangama. We could not verify bus or train times, so check on the day.

Ahangama is a surf village on the coast road between Galle and Weligama, and Hiriketiya is a small surf bay at Dikwella east of Matara. Surfers often ask about this pair because the two places are known for different kinds of waves. Our Ahangama page compares the two as surf bases. This page is about the trip between them.

What does the journey look like?

LegBy road (OSRM, no traffic)By rail
Ahangama to Hiriketiya, direct46.9 km, 55 minNo station at Hiriketiya
Ahangama to Weligama9.1 km, 10 min8.7 km on the line
Weligama to Matara16.2 km, 21 min14.0 km on the line
Ahangama to Matara24.8 km, 29 min22.7 km on the line
Matara to Hiriketiya22.3 km, 26 minNo rail

The direct road is 46.9 km. If you go in stages through Weligama and Matara, the legs on the same service add up to 47.1 km and 56 minutes, which is almost the same. Splitting the trip costs you very little extra distance. It costs you waiting time at each change.

The rail distances are our subtraction from the official Coast Line station table: Ahangama is 134.159 km, Weligama 142.824 km and Matara 156.813 km from Colombo Fort.

Which way should you go?

  1. Surfboard and bags, or you are not in a hurry to save money: take a taxi. One vehicle, no changes, and the board stays with you.
  2. Light bag and a long day ahead: train from Ahangama to Matara if one stops, then a bus east. The line runs close to the sea, and Matara is a transport hub.
  3. Budget and flexible time: bus all the way, changing at Weligama or Matara.
  4. Two or three surfers sharing: a taxi, and split the price.
  5. A day trip each way: think twice. It is about 94 km of driving for the round trip, so a day trip is better done by hiring a car for the whole day than by public transport.

Can you take the train from Ahangama?

Yes, but not every train stops there. Our Ahangama page says so, and suggests riding to Weligama and taking a short tuk-tuk if your train skips Ahangama. One guesthouse quoted on that page suggested taking the train to Weligama or Matara and a 15 to 20 minute tuk-tuk to the accommodation.

For this journey, the useful station is Matara. Ahangama to Matara is about 22.7 km on the line. From Matara you need a road transfer, about 22.3 km, to Hiriketiya. Our Hiriketiya page lists Matara and Beliatta as the nearest rail anchors. From Colombo Fort, the July 2022 fare table lists Ahangama at Rs 1,050 first class, Rs 550 second and Rs 260 third, and Matara at Rs 1,150, Rs 600 and Rs 300. There is no printed fare for Ahangama to Matara, because the table only prices trips from Colombo Fort. Ask at the counter.

We could not confirm train times online. The railway's own timetable site did not load on 18 or 23 October according to our getting around guide and Colombo to Galle train guide. Ask at Ahangama or Matara station, or try the seat reservation site on the day.

Can you go by bus?

Probably in two or three stages, but we cannot show you a timetable. The NTC fare list effective 6 July 2026 gives full-route fares, not stops. These routes matter for the eastern half of the trip:

NTC routeFrom and toFull-route fare
2Colombo to MataraRs 681 normal, Rs 1,022 semi-luxury, Rs 1,320 air-conditioned
333Matara to KataragamaRs 598 normal
32-4Colombo to TangalleRs 861 normal, Rs 1,292 semi-luxury, Rs 1,651 air-conditioned

Those are end-to-end prices. A short ride costs less and the conductor sets it. Route 2 runs between Colombo and Matara, so it should pass along the coast road near Ahangama, but the list does not show stops. A bus from Matara toward Tangalle or Kataragama should run along the A2 past Dikwella, which our Hiriketiya page places east of Matara on the coastal road toward Tangalle. We cannot confirm which bus stops where, so ask the conductor.

What to say: "Matara" at Ahangama, then "Dikwella" or "Hiriketiya" at Matara. The bay is about 1.4 km from the middle of Dikwella town by road (OSRM), so plan a short tuk-tuk or walk at the end. We could not verify a last bus, so do not plan on a late return.

What do taxis and tuk-tuks cost?

There is no official tariff that we can quote, and we publish no price we could not check. Agree one price for the whole ride, say whether it is per vehicle, and say whether the driver will wait. 47 km is a long tuk-tuk ride, and some drivers will not want to take it, so a taxi is the more usual choice. Our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide makes the same point about agreeing tuk-tuk fares first.

If you want a driver for a surf trip, ask for a price for the full day or for the exact one-way ride. Show the driver both ends on a phone map. Ahangama is a long stretch of coast, so say which beach or guesthouse you are leaving from.

Do you pass anything worth stopping for?

On the A2 you go through Weligama, Mirissa and Matara. Weligama has a wide beginner surf bay on our Weligama page, Mirissa is the whale-watching harbour on our Mirissa page, and Matara has a Dutch Star Fort museum and a lighthouse at Devinuwara according to our Mirissa page. If you split the trip by train and bus, Matara is a natural place to stop for lunch. Whale season on the south coast is November to April on our Mirissa page.

What is the weather this weekend?

On 23 October 2026 the Department of Meteorology, as reported by Colombo Tribune, said rain would continue in the south-west until 27 October. For 24 October it forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Galle and Matara districts, with a warning about strong gusts and lightning. Ahangama is in Galle District and Hiriketiya in Matara District, so your whole route is covered. Matara District averages 339.1 mm in October and 333.3 mm in November, on the Department of Meteorology's 1991 to 2020 figures quoted on our Hiriketiya page. Allow extra time and re-check the forecast on the morning you travel.
