Tangalle to Mirissa distance: bus, taxi and train options
Tangalle to Mirissa distance: 53 km by the expressway route, 48 km by the coast road, bus via Matara, the Matara to Mirissa train and what we could not verify. Checked 24 October 2026.

How far is Tangalle from Mirissa, and how do you get there?
Quick answer: The distance is about 53 km by road, around 52 minutes in a car with no traffic, on the fastest route, which uses the Southern Expressway. The coast road through Hiriketiya and Matara is a little shorter at about 48 km but takes about 56 minutes. A taxi is the quickest choice. By public transport you go by bus to Matara and then west to Mirissa by bus or train. There is no train from Tangalle, and we could not verify bus times.
People search for "Tangalle to Mirissa distance" when they are choosing between two bases. If that is you, our Weligama vs Mirissa vs Tangalle guide compares the places. This page is only about moving between them.
What is the distance, by each route?
| Route | Distance | Time with no traffic | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastest by car (uses the Southern Expressway) | 52.7 km | 52 min | OSRM, 24 Oct 2026 |
| Coast road via Hiriketiya (A2 all the way) | 48.0 km | 56 min | OSRM, two legs, 24 Oct 2026 |
| Tangalle to Matara, then Matara to Mirissa | 36.5 km + 11.0 km | 40 min + 14 min | OSRM, 24 Oct 2026 |
| Rail, Matara to Mirissa only | 9.3 km on the line | Check the timetable | Sri Lanka Railways station table |
Our Weligama vs Mirissa vs Tangalle guide gives about 47 km and 53 minutes for the same pair, from an OpenStreetMap route checked on 22 October. The two figures differ because the start and end points differ a little, so treat both as "about 50 km and about an hour". These are drives with no traffic, and real journeys vary with rain, buses and tuk-tuks.
The road distance differs from "as the crow flies" because the coast curves. If you are asking how far apart the two places are on a map, the road figure is the more useful one.
When does the expressway route pay off, and when does the coast road?
The expressway saves about 4 minutes on OSRM's numbers, not much. The coast road via Hiriketiya is shorter in distance but slower, because it passes through the towns. Both are about an hour. Which should you choose?
- Choose the coast road if you want to stop. It passes Hiriketiya and Matara, so you can swim, eat or visit the Dutch Star Fort museum at Matara, which our Tangalle page mentions.
- Choose the expressway if you want the shortest drive. A toll may apply, so ask the driver.
- Choose the coast road if the driver says the expressway is closed or busy. Ask for current conditions before you set off.
The Southern Expressway reached Beliatta and Hambantota in February 2020, according to the Government of Sri Lanka's news release of 24 February 2020.
Can you take a bus from Tangalle to Mirissa?
Probably with one change, but we cannot show you a timetable. The NTC list effective 6 July 2026 gives full-route fares only. These routes are relevant:
| NTC route | From and to | Full-route fare |
|---|---|---|
| 32-4 | Colombo to Tangalle | Rs 861 normal, Rs 1,292 semi-luxury, Rs 1,651 air-conditioned |
| 333 | Matara to Kataragama | Rs 598 normal |
| 2 | Colombo to Matara | Rs 681 normal, Rs 1,022 semi-luxury, Rs 1,320 air-conditioned |
Your ride is a small part of those routes, and the list does not give stops. The simple plan is to take a bus west from Tangalle to Matara, then another bus from Matara toward Galle, and ask the conductor to drop you at Mirissa. Our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide says that Matara buses are the ones to use for Mirissa, because Mirissa sits between Matara and Galle on the coast, and that you should finish with a local bus or tuk-tuk.
Can you take a train from Tangalle to Mirissa?
Not all the way. Tangalle has no railway station, and the nearest railhead is Beliatta, about 8 km away, according to our Weligama vs Mirissa vs Tangalle guide. The coast line from Colombo ends at Beliatta. So the practical train plan is bus to Matara, then train to Mirissa. Matara is 156.813 km and Mirissa 147.556 km from Colombo Fort on the Coast Line station table, so the train ride is about 9.3 km.
On the Colombo Fort fare table, dated July 2022, Mirissa is Rs 1,100 first class, Rs 550 second and Rs 280 third. Matara is Rs 1,150, Rs 600 and Rs 300. The table only gives fares from Colombo Fort, so there is no printed Matara to Mirissa fare. Ask at the counter. Train times could not be confirmed online when we looked, so ask at Matara station or check the seat reservation site on the day.
Is a taxi worth it?
For two or three people with bags, probably. There is no official tariff that we can quote for a taxi or tuk-tuk, so we publish no price. Agree one price for the whole ride, say whether it is per vehicle, and ask whether the driver will use the expressway and who pays the toll. For a tuk-tuk, 53 km is a long way. Many drivers will not want to go that far, and an open tuk-tuk is slower and tiring on a long ride.
Which base should you pick?
| If you want | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Whale trips and a busier beach | Mirissa | Boats leave from Mirissa harbour; whale season is November to April on our Mirissa page |
| A quieter, drier stretch | Tangalle | Our comparison guide notes a lower yearly rainfall at the Hambantota station |
| Both | Split your stay | Stay in one and treat the other as a day trip only if you have a car |
A day trip each way means about 105 km of driving and nearly two hours in the car on the drive times above. That is a lot for one day. If you want to see both, change your hotel rather than shuttle back and forth.
What is the weather this weekend?
On 23 October 2026 the Department of Meteorology, as reported by Colombo Tribune, said rain would continue in the south-west until 27 October. For 24 October it forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Galle and Matara districts, with strong gusts and lightning possible. Mirissa is in Matara District. The report did not name Hambantota District, where Tangalle is, so check the forecast yourself. Allow extra time and re-check on the morning you travel.
A sample transfer day: Tangalle to Mirissa by public transport
| Step | What to do | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bus from Tangalle toward Matara; ask the conductor about Mirissa | 36.5 km by road |
| 2 | At Matara, choose the next bus west or the train | 11.0 km by road, 9.3 km by rail |
| 3 | Get off at Mirissa, then a tuk-tuk to your guesthouse | Agree the price first |
Leave a morning for this. If you see a whale boat in your plans, the season is November to April, and you should book the boat before the transfer, not after.
