One Week, First Visit
A focused 7-day first route through the Cultural Triangle, with Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Dambulla instead of a four-region sprint.
One week is better used for one coherent Sri Lanka route than for a sprint through Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and Galle. This first-visit template stays in the Cultural Triangle before returning toward Colombo, trading geographic breadth for more meaningful time at three World Heritage properties.

The day allocations are editorial planning choices, not official minimums. Reverse, shorten or remove a stop when the live transfers or your pace require it.
Days 2–3: choose within Anuradhapura
The Sacred City of Anuradhapura covers multiple sacred and archaeological places. Choose the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya or other sites deliberately, verify current access, and plan transport between them. Do not assume one ticket or compact walking loop covers every priority.
Days 4–5: centre the route on Sigiriya
Use the Ancient City of Sigiriya guide to check current tickets, physical demands and access. The extra route time is a buffer for the archaeological property and transfer uncertainty, not a promise that every visitor needs two full days at the monument.
Day 6: visit Dambulla as a living sacred site
The Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple remains an active Buddhist site. Verify entry arrangements, dress appropriately, follow footwear and photography instructions, and assess the climb for the group.
Day 7: protect the departure
The final base depends on flight time and confirmed transport. Do not copy a generic airport duration. Check the exact origin, destination, date and mode, then keep enough contingency for the booking you cannot miss.
What this route intentionally leaves out
Kandy, Ella, Galle, beaches and safaris are omitted because each adds another cluster or long transfer. If those are non-negotiable, use the 10-day or two-week frameworks and still verify every operational segment.
Why this is a first-route option
The route concentrates on three World Heritage contexts rather than claiming to represent the whole country. It suits a traveller whose main interest is archaeology, sacred landscapes and a measured introduction to the Cultural Triangle.
It does not suit a traveller whose non-negotiable priority is surfing, whale watching, hill-country rail or a national-park drive. Those interests require a different one-week route, not extra stops squeezed into this one.
Base strategy
Avoid changing hotels for every listed destination. Compare Sigiriya and Dambulla as bases, and decide whether Anuradhapura requires its own nights based on the selected sacred sites. The route table shows daily priorities, not mandatory accommodation moves.

A possible daily workflow
Day 1: arrival
Use the day to arrive, recover and reconfirm the next transfer. Add Negombo sightseeing only if flight timing and the actual accommodation location support it.
Days 2–3: Anuradhapura
Choose sacred and archaeological priorities before arrival. Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanwelisaya are active worship settings; the wider Ancient City includes distinct sites. Plan transport between them and leave room for current access or ceremony changes.
Mihintale is not automatic. Add it only if hillside access, transport and the group's capacity fit.
Days 4–5: Sigiriya area
Use one day for the Ancient City of Sigiriya and retain the other as a transfer buffer, a second verified place or a slower base day. Confirm official tickets, weather exposure and physical demands.
Do not substitute an informal “eighth wonder” label for the property's documented World Heritage status.
Day 6: Dambulla
Visit the cave temple as a living Buddhist site. Prepare suitable clothing, follow footwear and photography rules, and check the ascent and current entry arrangement.
If Dambulla is the accommodation base, the day can be sequenced differently. The route should follow the exact property and transfers, not this page's headings.
Day 7: departure positioning
Move toward the departure side based on the actual flight. Confirm the route and contingency. Do not add Colombo sightseeing unless the available time remains meaningful after transport.
If the route is still too busy
Remove Dambulla if Sigiriya is the only essential rock/heritage visit. Remove Anuradhapura if the traveller prefers a Sigiriya-and-Dambulla base with less movement. Keep the route coherent rather than reducing every heritage property to a few hours.

- Intercity transport by exact date.
- Weather and physical-demand alternatives.
One week is enough for this focused purpose only when the verified route preserves time at the places that justify it.

Day 1
Negombo
Arrival base; confirm the actual airport transfer and recovery needs before adding sightseeing.
Day 2
Anuradhapura
Use days 2–3 for a selected sacred-city plan rather than attempting every monument.
Day 4
Sigiriya
Use days 4–5 for the Ancient City and a route buffer; verify tickets, access and physical demands.
Day 6
Dambulla
Visit the living cave-temple property respectfully after checking current entry and site rules.
Day 7
Colombo
Return toward the departure side of the island; confirm flight timing and the actual road or rail transfer.
