Unawatuna Weather in October: Rain, Sea, Swimming
Unawatuna in October: where the month ranks in the Galle year by rain days, why the bureau warns about currents until October, what a late-October day looked like on 24 October 2026, and what to do when the weather turns.

What is Unawatuna weather like in October?
Quick answer: Warm and wet. October is the second inter-monsoon, when Sri Lanka Tourism says heavy showers can fall anywhere. At the Galle station, the nearest long-term weather record, October has more rain days than any other month: about 18 days with at least 1 mm of rain. Highs sit near 29 C. The reef-sheltered bay can still be pleasant in the mornings, but the Southern Province tourist bureau warns of strong currents until the end of October, so swim only in designated safe areas.
Our Unawatuna destination page has the full 12-month table, Jungle Beach, trains and a three-town comparison. This page is only about October. If you are weighing a different month, the best time to visit guide covers the island.
Where does October rank in the Galle year?
We use the Galle station because it is the nearest long-term record to Unawatuna, which is about 5 km south-east of Galle, per Sri Lanka Tourism. This table ranks months by two rain-day counts, so it avoids the month-to-month rainfall totals that vary between sources.
| Galle station, 1991 to 2020 | Days with 1 mm or more | Days with 10 mm or more | Rank by days with 1 mm or more |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | 18.2 | 8.5 | 1st |
| May | 17.2 | 7.7 | 2nd |
| September | 17.1 | 7.4 | 3rd |
| June | 16.6 | 5.8 | 4th |
| November | 14.9 | 7.5 | 6th |
| December | 11.2 | 4.7 | 9th |
| February (driest) | 5.8 | 2.6 | 12th |

What this means: October is the wettest month of the year at Galle by both counts. On average, three days in five have some rain (18.2 of 31), and a bit more than one day in four brings 10 mm or more (8.5 of 31). That is a wetter October than the monsoon peak in May. For a 7-night stay, scale by 7 over 31, which is our own arithmetic:
- Days with 1 mm or more: about 4 (18.2 x 7 / 31 = 4.1).
- Days with 10 mm or more: about 2 (8.5 x 7 / 31 = 1.9).
How hot is Unawatuna in October?
Not much cooler or hotter than any other month. At the Galle station the October average high is 29.4 C and the average low is 24.8 C. December is almost the same (29.9 C and 23.7 C), and the whole year stays between about 29 and 32 C for highs. The difference between October and December on the coast is the rain, not the heat.
Is the sea safe for swimming in Unawatuna in October?
Check it each day. Sri Lanka Tourism describes Unawatuna as a semi-circular beach "protected by a natural reef". The Southern Province tourist bureau adds a safety line that matters for October: "Always swim in designated safe areas and watch out for strong currents, particularly during the monsoon season (May to October)." October is the last month of that window.
We found no official wave-height or lifeguard data for Unawatuna, so we do not give any. Use this table as a day-by-day habit. The advice column is ours, not an official scale.
| What you see or read | What we suggest |
|---|---|
| The Department of Meteorology says the sea may be rough at times, or very rough in thundershowers | Stay out of the water, or paddle only in the shallows in a designated safe area |
| Calm morning, no thunder forecast | A short swim in a designated safe area is more reasonable. Mornings are the half of the day the 24 October bulletin left dry (see the snapshot below) |
| Red or warning flags, or local advice not to swim | Follow it |
| You are a weak swimmer or have children with you | Use the hotel pool or wait for a calmer day |
What did late October 2026 look like?
This is a one-day snapshot of how the second inter-monsoon can behave. It will be out of date when you read it. The Department of Meteorology's forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. on 24 October 2026 said:
- A low-pressure area near the North Andaman Islands was expected to intensify and become a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of 26 October. It was not expected to affect Sri Lanka directly, but an increase in rainfall was expected over the south-western parts of the island during the next few days.
- Showers or thundershowers were expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North-western provinces. Elsewhere, including the Southern Province, they were expected after 1.00 p.m., with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm likely at some places in those areas.
- The sea areas off the coast, including those off Galle and Matara, may be rough at times, and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
The part to take away is the timing: the bulletin put the Southern Province's showers after 1.00 p.m. That is one day, not a rule, but it fits a common-sense plan of beach and walks in the morning and shelter in the afternoon. Our October guide says the same pattern is typical, with storms tending to come later in the day.
What is the best way to plan an Unawatuna day in October?
This is the planning tool this page adds. It is our suggested split, built from the bureau's own tips, not a schedule from any business.
| Part of day | Suggested plan | Where the idea comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Jungle Beach for a quiet swim, kayak or paddleboard, or the Rumassala walk | The bureau suggests Jungle Beach early in the morning and a sunrise walk up Rumassala |
| Late morning | Swim at the main beach only in a designated area, if the sea looks calm | The bureau's safety advice |
| Afternoon | Galle Fort, about 5 km away, or a cafe. Keep it flexible | The 24 October bulletin put showers after 1.00 p.m. in the south |
| Late afternoon | Optional second beach visit if the weather has cleared | The bureau suggests Jungle Beach late in the afternoon too |
Diving and snorkelling trips are listed by the bureau as daily with early morning and afternoon slots. Whether one runs on the day depends on the sea, and operators decide that. Our diving and snorkelling guide explains why a monthly label does not tell you the visibility or current on your date.
Can you go whale watching from Unawatuna in October?
Not in the southern season. The Sri Lanka Navy says its southern cruises run from Galle from November to April, and from Trincomalee from May to October. The bureau also gives November to April for whale boat tours around Unawatuna. If whales are your main goal, October is too early on the south coast. Our whale watching guide compares Mirissa and Trincomalee by month, and the Mirissa page covers boats in the season.
Is it worth going to Unawatuna in October or should you wait?
| October | December | |
|---|---|---|
| Days with 1 mm or more of rain (Galle) | 18.2 | 11.2 |
| Days with 10 mm or more (Galle) | 8.5 | 4.7 |
| Average high and low (C, Galle) | 29.4 and 24.8 | 29.9 and 23.7 |
| Sea, per the bureau | Bureau flags strong currents May to October | Outside the May to October window |
| Season, per Sri Lanka Tourism | Second inter-monsoon, can be rough | Start of the peak season, clear skies and calm seas |
| Whales | Outside the southern season | In season |
| Better for | A flexible traveller, a Galle Fort stay, a short trip | A fixed-date beach week |
October works if you can move days around and you value Galle Fort and walks over the beach. If your dates are fixed and the beach is the point, aim for December to March. For the whole picture of the south-west monsoon, see our monsoon seasons guide and Sri Lanka in December. If you cannot decide between the beach and the fort, read Galle vs Unawatuna. The south coast guide lists the bases further east, including Weligama and Galle.

Frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Unawatuna in October?
Warm and wet. The Galle station, the nearest long-term record, shows highs near 29 C, lows near 25 C and rain on about 18 days of the month, more than any other month of the year. Sri Lanka Tourism calls October and November the second inter-monsoon, with occasional heavy showers.
Is October a bad time to visit Unawatuna?
It is the wettest month at the Galle station by rain days, so it is the weakest month for a fixed-date beach trip. It can still work for a flexible traveller who plans for mornings on the beach and has a wet-weather plan. December to March is the drier stretch.
Can you swim in Unawatuna in October?
Sometimes, with care. Sri Lanka Tourism describes a reef-protected bay, but the Southern Province tourist bureau warns of strong currents, particularly during the monsoon season, May to October, and says to swim only in designated safe areas. On 24 October 2026 the Department of Meteorology said the sea off the south-west coast may be rough at times.
How many rainy days does Unawatuna have in October?
On the Galle station average, 18.2 days with at least 1 mm of rain and 8.5 days with 10 mm or more. Scaled to a 7-night stay, that is about 4 days with some rain and 2 with a heavy fall. It is an average, not a forecast.
Is Unawatuna worth visiting in October compared with December?
On the numbers, December is better: 11.2 days with at least 1 mm of rain at Galle against 18.2 in October, and 4.7 days with 10 mm or more against 8.5. December is also the start of Sri Lanka Tourism's peak season. October is for flexible dates only.
Can you go whale watching from Unawatuna in October?
Not in the southern season. The Sri Lanka Navy lists its southern cruises from Galle from November to April, and Trincomalee cruises from May to October. Confirm any sailing for your date on the Navy site.
What is there to do in Unawatuna when it rains?
Galle Fort is about 5 km away and works as a shelter, and the Southern Province tourist bureau suggests visiting Jungle Beach early in the morning or late in the afternoon and walking Rumassala at sunrise or sunset. Diving and snorkelling trips are listed as daily with morning and afternoon slots, but conditions decide whether they run.
What is the temperature in Unawatuna in October?
At the Galle station the average high is 29.4 C and the average low is 24.8 C in October, on the WMO 1991 to 2020 normals. That is almost the same as December (29.9 C and 23.7 C), so rain, not heat, separates the two months.
