Weligama

A wide, sandy bay on the south coast between Galle and Mirissa, known for beginner surf lessons, stilt fishermen and Taprobane Island. Surf season runs November to March.

Is Weligama a good place to learn to surf?

Quick answer: Yes. Weligama is a wide, sandy bay on the south coast with gentle beginner waves, and on 17 October 2026 two local schools listed lessons from LKR 5,000 (about US$15) per person. The surf season runs from November to March. Mirissa's whale-watching harbour is under 5 km away along the line.

The Southern Province tourist bureau describes Weligama Beach as "renowned for its golden sands and beginner-friendly waves" and says the name means "Sandy Village" (Ruhunu Tourist Bureau, Weligama Beach). It sits in Matara District, between Unawatuna and Galle to the west and Mirissa to the east.

How much do surf lessons cost in Weligama?

These are the public prices on two schools' own websites on 17 October 2026. They are dated samples, not a market average. US dollar figures use the Central Bank's buying rate for 16 October 2026 (LKR 326.67 per US dollar) and are rounded.

Value check: Party Wave's group lesson works out at about LKR 4,000 per hour of total lesson time (LKR 5,000 for 1 hour 15 minutes), and Weligama Surf Center's private beginner lesson at about LKR 4,000 per hour too (LKR 6,000 for 1 hour 30 minutes). For roughly the same rate, the private lesson gives you one-to-one coaching.

When is the best time to visit Weligama?

November to March. The bureau gives November to March as the best time for surf lessons. Galle is the nearest long-term weather station, about 29 km west along the railway, so treat its numbers as a guide for Weligama rather than an exact match (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations).

Sri Lanka Tourism calls December to February the "peak tourist season on the southwest coast. Clear skies, calm seas" (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page). November is in the season window but is still wet on the long-term average, so January to March is the safer choice for a short trip. Source: Ruhunu Tourist Bureau, read 17 October 2026. On Taprobane Island: reaching it on foot at low tide does not give you the right to go onto a private island, so ask locally before you wade out, and watch the tide. If you photograph stilt fishermen, ask first.

The bureau also lists a Weligama Surf Festival in February. We could not find confirmed 2027 dates, so treat it as unconfirmed.

Can you go whale watching from Weligama?

Yes, from neighbouring Mirissa. Sri Lanka Tourism says blue, Bryde's, sperm and fin whales and several dolphin species are found "from Weligama to Mirrissa", within eight to ten nautical miles of Mirissa harbour (Sri Lanka Tourism, whale and dolphin watching). The Sri Lanka Navy lists southern cruises from November to April. On 17 October 2026, whalewatching.navy.lk showed that seasonal calendar and did not state a maintenance pause; confirm sailings there. Compare prices and the legal distance rules on the Mirissa destination page, or read the wider whale watching in Sri Lanka page.

How do you get to Weligama?

Weligama has a station on the Coast Line, and the bureau says trains connect it "with major cities like Colombo and Galle", with buses and tuk-tuks for short hops.

Weligama, Mirissa or Unawatuna?

The three-town decision table lives on the Unawatuna page. Stay in Weligama if you want the wide beginner bay as your daily base. Stay in Mirissa if the harbour for whale boats matters more. Stay in Unawatuna if you want a reef-sheltered swim close to Galle Fort. For a small horseshoe surf bay further east, see Hiriketiya.

Is Weligama good for a wellness or yoga trip?

It can work as a base, but check the details yourself. There are yoga schools and retreats in the Weligama area, and the bureau lists a "Health & Wellness" category for the south. We did not verify any specific yoga school, its teacher qualifications or its prices for this page, so we do not name one. For Ayurveda, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority licenses Ayurveda centres under its own regulation; our Ayurveda in Sri Lanka guide explains how to check a licence and compares dated retreat prices. For a ready-made plan based here, see the 7-day wellness itinerary.

What should you know before you go?

  • Surf with an instructor at first. Ask about the safety briefing, which Party Wave includes before every lesson.
  • Sun protection: a rash vest helps; Party Wave includes one with its lessons.
  • Temples: the bureau advises respecting dress codes and removing shoes.
  • Cash: both schools listed prices in rupees, and Weligama Surf Center takes payment on site.
