South Coast

Sri Lanka's south coast from Galle to Tangalle, compared town by town: who each beach town suits, how to get there and when to go. Checked 14 October 2026.

Pick your south coast base by what you want most: Galle for the old fort town, Unawatuna for an easy swim near Galle, Weligama for learning to surf, Mirissa for whale watching, Hiriketiya for a compact surf bay at Dickwella, and Tangalle for quieter bays further east. Most trips need one or two bases, not five. October to December is the start of the south coast season, and the Sri Lanka Navy's southern whale-watching cruises are scheduled from November to April.

Award news (checked 16 October 2026): Condé Nast Traveller readers voted Arugam Bay the best beach in Asia for 2026, and placed Bentota 9th, Tangalle 14th and Negombo 19th. See the best months for each in Sri Lanka's award-winning beaches for 2026.

Should you stay inside Galle Fort or on a beach?

Stay inside the fort if you want to walk the ramparts at dawn and dusk and eat out every night. The Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications is a UNESCO World Heritage property and a living town, so it is busier by day than by night. Stay on a beach such as Unawatuna if swimming matters more; Galle Fort is then a short ride away for an evening. If you only have one night on the coast, the fort usually wins. Our Galle Fort page covers the walls and what to see.

Is Unawatuna worth it?

Unawatuna is a sheltered bay just east of Galle. It suits travellers who want a beach day without a long transfer from Galle. We have not yet checked official sea-safety guidance specific to Unawatuna, so use the same rule as everywhere on this coast: check the Department of Meteorology's marine information and local flags on the day.

When is the best time to visit the south coast?

The south coast's main season starts in the north-east monsoon, which brings drier weather to the south-west. The Sri Lanka Navy schedules its whale-watching cruises from Galle past Mirissa from November to April, and from Trincomalee from May to October. October is the shoulder month: seas can still be rough and some boats are not yet running. On 14 October 2026 the Navy's own ship was not sailing because of maintenance. For rain by month, see the best time to visit guide, the Sri Lanka in October guide, the Sri Lanka in November guide and, for Christmas and New Year, the Sri Lanka in December guide.

How much does whale watching cost on the south coast?

On 14 October 2026, Raja and the Whales listed LKR 20,000 per adult and LKR 10,000 per child (6 to 11) from Mirissa Harbour. The Sri Lanka Navy listed US$80 per foreign adult, tax included, for its southern cruise. Full details are on the Mirissa page and the island-wide whale-watching guide.

How do you get to the south coast and around it?

The Southern Expressway is the fast route from Colombo. The NTC lists these expressway bus fares, effective 6 July 2026:

RouteFare
Makumbura to Galle (EX 1)Rs 930
Makumbura to Matara (EX 1-1)Rs 1,170
Colombo to Matara (EX 1-18)Rs 1,320
Negombo to Galle (EX 1-33/270)Rs 1,370
Negombo to Matara (EX01/EX03)Rs 1,590

From the airport, read our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide. Between towns, the coast road links Galle, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa and Matara; check rail and bus times for your date in getting around Sri Lanka. For a day-by-day plan with 5, 7 and 10 day routes, see our south coast itinerary.

Is the south coast good for swimming?

Some days, at some beaches. Beach shape, swell and currents change by place and by day. Check current marine information, follow local flags and lifeguards, and keep surfing, swimming and boat trips as separate decisions. The beach decision guide explains what to check.

East or south coast?

The two coasts have opposite seasons. From October to December the south is coming into season while the east is winding down. If you are still deciding, read east coast vs south coast. If you want wildlife too, Tangalle is the natural hand-off to the deep south safari region.
