How do you drive from Colombo to Jaffna in 4 days?
Quick answer: Take the slow way and sleep in Anuradhapura, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu before you reach Jaffna. That is about 450 km in short legs, the longest about 3 hours 21 minutes on day 1. The east coast detour adds about 58 km compared with the same stops on the A9.
Most trips to the north go straight up the A9 in a day. This plan is for travellers with a car and driver who want to see the Vanni, the flat country of tanks and small towns between Anuradhapura and the Jaffna peninsula. For a week based in Jaffna itself, see Jaffna and the North in 7 Days.

What do you see on day 1 and day 2?
Day 1, Anuradhapura. The drive from the airport is the longest of the trip. Arrive by mid afternoon and see the sacred city in the late light. Our Colombo airport to Anuradhapura guide covers the drive and the bus options.
Day 2, Mihintale and Vavuniya. Climb Mihintale early, before the heat. Then drive north on the A9 to Vavuniya. The Northern Province tourism bureau says the Vavuniya museum shows finds from the fifth to eighth centuries and opens 8.30 am to 5 pm, closed on Tuesdays and public holidays. The ruins of Madukanda Vihara, which the bureau says was a resting place of the Tooth Relic on its way to Anuradhapura, are about 4 km out of town on the A29.
What do you see on day 3 in Mullaitivu?
From Vavuniya the road runs east about 74 km to Mullaitivu on the coast. The bureau lists Nanthi Kadal, a lagoon whose name means the sea of conches, 10.7 km from town on the A35. The Oddusuddan Shiva temple is 25 km inland on the A34 if you want a temple stop.
Check the sea before you swim. The Department of Meteorology forecast at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 said the sea from Puttalam to Mullaitivu via Kankesanthurai could be very rough at times, with winds of 60 to 65 kmph. Our Mullaitivu page has more.
What do you see on day 4 on the way to Jaffna?
Drive west on the A35 to Paranthan and the A9. The bureau says Iranamadu tank, the second largest reservoir in the Northern Province, is about 10 km south of Kilinochchi town on the A9, so it is a short detour. The Murukandy Pillaiyar temple on the A9 south of Kilinochchi is where, the bureau says, drivers stop to pray for a safe journey.
North of Kilinochchi, the A9 crosses Elephant Pass onto the Jaffna peninsula. Jaffna town is about 69 km from Kilinochchi. Our Jaffna page and Nallur Kandaswamy temple page cover what to do next.
