Vavuniya
The gateway town of the Northern Province, on the A9 between Anuradhapura and Jaffna. The Vavuniya museum, Madukanda Vihara and the Murugan hill temple, official bus fares from Colombo, Kandy and Anuradhapura, road times, the airport taxi rate and the heat by month. Checked 28 October 2026.
Is Vavuniya worth visiting?
Quick answer: Vavuniya is a good stop, not a holiday base. It is the first big town of the Northern Province on the A9, about 60 km north of Anuradhapura and 144 km south of Jaffna by road. Give it two or three hours for the small archaeology museum, the ruins of Madukanda Vihara and lunch, then drive on.
Vavuniya is where the dry plains of the north-central region give way to the Vanni, the flat, tank-dotted country between Anuradhapura and the Jaffna peninsula. Buses from Colombo, Kandy, Trincomalee and Mannar all meet here, which is why it works as a break on the long drive to Jaffna.
What is there to see in Vavuniya?
The Northern Province tourism bureau lists these sights in Vavuniya district. Distances and directions are the bureau's own.
| Sight | What it is | How to get there (bureau directions) |
|---|---|---|
| Vavuniya museum | Archaeology museum opened in 1970 | On the A9, about 500 m from the clock tower |
| Madukanda Vihara | Ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery | About 4 km along the A29 Horowpathana road from the bus stand, then left |
| Palanimalai Murugan temple, Sithamparapuram | Hill temple at about 200 m, reached by 400 steps | A9 to Thaandikulam junction, then the Vappankulam road |
| Kalvarimalai, Periyakomarasankulam | Catholic shrine on a hill with scenes from the life of Jesus | Korappoththanai road, then the Madukanthai Iraperiyankulam road |
| Puthur Nagathampiran temple | Shiva temple linked with cobras | A9 to Omanthai and Puliyankulam, then 1.8 km on an inner road |
| Pottkovil, Vannarkulam | Temple where Kannaki Amman is said to have rested | Omanthai area |
What is in the Vavuniya museum?
The bureau says the museum was set up in 1970 to hold archaeological finds from Vavuniya and the area around it. It shows objects from the fifth to the eighth centuries: Buddha statues, statues of Hindu gods, old pottery and terracotta figures.
The bureau gives the hours as 8.30 am to 5 pm, closed on Tuesdays and public holidays. We found no official ticket price on 28 October 2026. If you drive north on a Tuesday, see Madukanda Vihara instead.
What is Madukanda Vihara?
The bureau says Madukanda Vihara was one of the resting places of the Sacred Tooth Relic on its journey to Anuradhapura in the 4th century AD, in the reign of King Mahasen. Today you see the outer wall, a few stone pillars, and steps with a balustrade and guard stone. It is a short detour from town: about 4 km along the A29, then a left turn, says the bureau.
If you plan to see the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy later in the trip, this is a quiet place to start that story.
Which temples near Vavuniya can you visit?
- Palanimalai Murugan temple, Sithamparapuram. The bureau calls it the Eelathu Palani Murugan temple. It stands about 200 m up and you climb 400 steps from the road. Go early, before the heat.
- Kalvarimalai. A Catholic shrine in hilly ground at Periyakomarasankulam, with scenes from the life of Jesus. The bureau says pilgrims walk here from Mannar in Lent, and that prayers run for 40 days in March and April.
- Puthur Nagathampiran temple. A Shiva temple where, the bureau says, many devotees gather on full moon days and cook milk rice in the courtyard. Our festival calendar lists the full moon Poya days.
Dress for a temple visit: covered shoulders and knees, shoes off. Our guide to visiting sacred sites has more.
