What is the best Ramayana trail itinerary for Sri Lanka?
Quick answer: Ten days by road covers the main sites on Sri Lanka Tourism's own Ramayana list. Start near Chilaw for Munneswaram and Manavari, cross to Trincomalee for Koneswaram, climb into the hills for Ramboda, Seetha Eliya and Ravana Cave near Ella, then finish on the south coast at Kataragama, Ussangoda and Rumassala. Each site has its legend from the Ramayana; these are traditions, not archaeological findings.

What is the day-by-day plan?
Day 1: Airport to Chilaw
Land at Colombo airport and drive about 53 km north to Chilaw, around 1 hour on our route. Visit Munneswaram, then Manavari, and check the afternoon hours at Manavari (4.00 to 7.00 pm). Sri Lanka Tourism says Munneswaram holds two annual festivals, in February and August, and Manavari a ten-day festival in July.
Day 2: Chilaw to Trincomalee
| Leg | Distance | Time (no traffic) |
|---|---|---|
| Chilaw to Anuradhapura | about 129 km | about 2 h 20 min |
| Anuradhapura to Trincomalee | about 107 km | about 2 h |
This is the longest day. Break it in Anuradhapura for lunch. To add Thiru Ketheeswaram, the third lingam in the legend, add a night in Mannar: Sri Lanka Tourism puts the temple 112 km from Anuradhapura and 8.7 km from Mannar.
Day 3: Trincomalee
Visit Koneswaram Temple inside the old fort in the morning, then the Kanniya hot wells about 10 km away. See our Trincomalee guide for beaches and stays.
Day 4: Trincomalee to Kandy
About 180 km, around 3 h 30 min. In the evening, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic if you wish. See our Kandy guide.
Day 5: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya via Ramboda
Kandy to Ramboda is about 50 km (1 h), and Ramboda to Nuwara Eliya about 22 km (30 min). Stop at the Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple at Ramboda on the way up, then visit Gayathri Peedam in Nuwara Eliya. The hills are cool, so bring a warm layer.
Day 6: Seetha Eliya and Divurumpola to Ella
| Leg | Distance | Time (no traffic) |
|---|---|---|
| Nuwara Eliya to Seetha Eliya | about 7 km | about 9 min |
| Seetha Eliya to Welimada | about 18 km | about 23 min |
| Welimada to Ella | about 31 km | about 39 min |
Visit the Sita Amman Temple first, then Divurumpola near Welimada, and sleep in Ella.
Day 7: Ravana Cave
Sri Lanka Tourism says you turn off 3 km from Ella on the Wellawaya road, go 2 km up to the Ravana Ella temple, then climb. It puts the climb at about 45 minutes and suggests 2 hours at the site. Wear good shoes and carry water.
Day 8: Ella to Kataragama
Drive about 89 km (1 h 40 min) to Tissamaharama, then about 17 km (20 min) to Kataragama, a place sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims. Our Kataragama pilgrimage guide explains how to plan a respectful visit to the active precinct. Sleep in Tissamaharama.
Day 9: Ussangoda to Unawatuna
Tissamaharama to Ussangoda is about 47 km (1 h), and Ussangoda to Unawatuna about 97 km (1 h 25 min). Sri Lanka Tourism says the soil at Ussangoda is still dark, unlike the land around it. End the day at Rumassala above Unawatuna.
Day 10: Kelaniya and the flight home
Unawatuna to Colombo is about 124 km (1 h 45 min), and Colombo to the airport about 34 km (30 min). Kelaniya is about 10 km from Colombo on the Kandy road, so it fits between the two. Sri Lanka Tourism says murals at the Buddhist temple show the crowning of Vibeeshana.
