Buddhism

A visitor-oriented map of active Buddhist places in Sri Lanka, from Anuradhapura and Mihintale to Kandy and Sri Pada.

This page maps active Buddhist places for visitors; it is not a complete history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. UNESCO, the Central Cultural Fund and individual temples provide the strongest starting points for the named sites in this corpus.

Where to begin

Shared sacred landscapes

Sri Pada and Kataragama are described through several traditions. Do not use the label “multi-faith” to imply that those interpretations or rituals are identical. Shared landscapes are grouped on the multi-faith sacred sites page.

Visiting

Check each site's current clothing, footwear, photography, entry and ceremony guidance. Follow temple staff and avoid obstructing worship. The Buddhist pilgrimage circuit helps with routing; the etiquette guide covers preparation.

Understand the visitor's role

Many Buddhist places in Sri Lanka remain active places of worship. Heritage importance does not remove that function. Dress according to current site guidance, remove footwear where instructed, avoid turning your back to sacred imagery for photographs when local rules prohibit it, and leave clear space around worshippers and offerings.

Plan by landscape

Anuradhapura needs movement between places across a large sacred city. Kandy concentrates attention around a living temple and ceremony schedule. Dambulla combines a climb, protected interiors and worship. Sri Pada is a pilgrimage route whose physical and seasonal demands need a separate decision.

Verify institution-specific rules

Opening, ticketing, photography and ceremony access can change. Use the official temple or managing authority where available. General etiquette helps you prepare, but staff instructions at the named place always take precedence.

Places associated with more than one tradition are listed on the multi-faith sacred sites page.
