How far is Tangalle from Colombo airport?

Our sample gave 211.3 km and about 2 hours 47 minutes with no traffic. The map named three roads for the drive:

StretchRoadAbout
Airport to the Outer Circular HighwayColombo to Katunayake Expressway (E03)17 km
Around ColomboOuter Circular Highway (E02)27 km
Down the coastSouthern Expressway (E01)152 km
The last stretchBeliatte to Tangalle Road (B141)7 km

The stretches are rounded and do not add exactly to the total. The map leaves the expressway at its Beliatte end and finishes on a local road for only about 7 km. That makes this a different kind of trip from Ahangama, where the expressway ends at Galle. The expressway is the main part of the journey here, so ask about tolls. Our Tangalle destination page gives about 195 km from Colombo. The airport is north of Colombo, so the longer figure here is expected, and the two pages measure from different places.

What does the airport taxi card say about Tangalle?

On the AASL fixed-fare card, as read on 28 October 2026, THANGALLE is Rs 37,692 for the air-conditioned taxi. The card shows no last-updated date, does not say how many passengers or bags a rate covers, and does not say if expressway tolls are included. The airport page adds two charges: Rs 130 for each extra kilometre beyond the destination you asked for, and Rs 300 for each extra drop within the agreed journey.

The card has lines for the towns near it, so you can see what a different base on the coast would cost.

Card lineRate (air-conditioned)Difference from Tangalle
MATARARs 33,048Rs 4,644 less
DEVUNDARARs 34,020Rs 3,672 less
DICKWELLARs 34,992Rs 2,700 less
HIRIKETIYA (near Dickwella)Rs 35,380Rs 2,312 less
THANGALLERs 37,692
HAMBANTOTARs 39,744Rs 2,052 more

The differences are our arithmetic from the card. On our distance, Rs 37,692 over 211.3 km is about Rs 178 for each kilometre. That is our arithmetic, not a rate the airport publishes. It is also higher than the Ahangama line, which works out near Rs 166 for each kilometre on our 165.3 km distance, so the card is not a single flat rate. The card does not say how it was built, and we do not guess. It does not say if a rate is for the whole car or per passenger, so confirm that with the counter before you pay. Our Tangalle to Hiriketiya guide covers the short trip west if you want to split the stay.

How do you get from the airport to Tangalle by bus?

There is no direct airport bus to Tangalle. The airport lists bus 187 to Colombo Fort (Rs 325 a person, about 50 minutes, 24 hours a day, from the Departure Terminal Outer Porch), with an extra fee equal to the ticket price for baggage over 23 kg.

The NTC inter-provincial table lists route 32-4 from Colombo to Tangalle, which is listed as one Colombo to Tangalle route, so we found no change of bus in the table.

Fare classRoute 32-4With bus 187 (our sum)
NormalRs 861Rs 1,186
Semi-luxuryRs 1,292Rs 1,617
Air-conditioned luxuryRs 1,651Rs 1,976

The expressway table lists Colombo to Matara (EX 1-18) at Rs 1,320 and Makumbura to Matara (EX 1-1) at Rs 1,170. Those buses end in Matara, which is short of Tangalle. We found no sourced fare for the Matara to Tangalle leg, so we do not add one.

The sums are ours. The table lists route ends only, with no stops and no times. We found no official timetable and no seat reservation source for route 32-4. Ask where route 32-4 leaves in Colombo, because the airport bus drops at the Fort and we found no source for the stand.

Should you go straight to Tangalle?

Tangalle is about two and three quarter hours from the airport on our no-traffic sample, which is a long day after a long flight. If you land at night, or the flight is delayed, a first night near the airport or in Galle is easier. Our Negombo destination page covers the closest beach town, our Galle destination page covers the fort town on the way, and our Colombo airport arrival guide covers the airport itself.

  • Tolls. The card does not say if expressway tolls are included, and this route is mostly expressway.

What is the weather and landslide check for this route? (Checked 28 October 2026)

  • Landslide warning: the Disaster Management Centre's early warning LEWM-27-10-2026-1600-34, prepared with the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), is valid from 16:00 on 27 October to 16:00 on 28 October 2026. It put Level 3 (Red) on Dodangoda and Bulathsinhala in Kalutara district, which lies between Colombo and Galle, and Level 2 (Amber) on seven other Kalutara areas. In Galle district it listed only Level 1 (Yellow) areas (Neluwa, Thawalama, Niyagama, Karandeniya and Elpitiya), and in Matara district only Level 1 areas (Pitabeddara and Kotapola). It did not list Hambantota district.
  • Forecast: the Department of Meteorology forecast issued at 5.30 am on 28 October 2026 expected several spells of showers in the Western Province and in Galle and Matara districts, and strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph at times in Hambantota district. Its sea forecast for the next 24 hours said the sea area from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota may be very rough at times, with waves of about 2.0 to 2.5 m from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
  • What to do: call 117, the Disaster Management Centre hotline, and check the Department of Meteorology bulletin before you leave and again at your first stop. Our Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide explains the wider pattern, and our south coast region guide covers the area.

If a warning applies on your travel day, tell your driver, ask for a daylight arrival, and be ready to change the plan. A short delay costs less than a risky road.
