Tangalle to Hiriketiya: distance, bus and tuk-tuk options

Tangalle to Hiriketiya: 15 km on the A2, taxi, tuk-tuk or local bus, why there is no train, what to agree with a driver and what we could not verify. Checked 24 October 2026.

Small rocky cove with a tide pool, a weathered driftwood log and cliffs covered in forest

How do you get from Tangalle to Hiriketiya?

Quick answer: It is about 15 km by road, roughly 17 minutes in a car with no traffic, on the A2 coast road. A tuk-tuk or taxi is the easy choice. A local bus on the coast road is the low-cost choice, but we could not verify bus times or a last bus, so ask on the day. There is no train: Tangalle has no station, and Hiriketiya has none either.

Tangalle is a group of quiet bays, and Hiriketiya is a compact surf bay at Dikwella. They are close, which makes this one of the easiest hops on the south coast. The Tangalle page says the town is 35 km east of Matara, and our Hiriketiya page puts the bay east of Matara on the same road.

How far is it, and what does each option look like?

OptionWhat it involvesDistance and time (OSRM, no traffic)
Taxi or car with driverOne ride from your Tangalle door to the bay14.9 km, 17 min
Tuk-tukShort ride, bags on your lap14.9 km
Local busBoarding on the coast road toward MataraSame road, A2
Bike or scooterYour own risk and licenceSame road, A2

The road is the A2 and OSRM does not use the expressway for this hop. You do not need to join the Southern Expressway to get to Hiriketiya from Tangalle.

Is there a train from Tangalle to Hiriketiya?

No. Our Weligama vs Mirissa vs Tangalle guide says Tangalle has no railway station and that the nearest railhead is Beliatta, about 8 km away. Our Hiriketiya page lists Matara and Beliatta as the nearest rail anchors. The coast line itself ends at Beliatta, which is Rs 1,300 first class, Rs 650 second and Rs 340 third from Colombo Fort on the July 2022 fare table. That table is old, so confirm the fare at the station. A train does not help for a 15 km hop between two places that both lack a station.

Can you take a bus from Tangalle to Hiriketiya?

Buses on the A2 pass along this coast, and the NTC lists several routes that start or end around Tangalle. In its inter-provincial fare list effective 6 July 2026, route 32-4 runs from Colombo to Tangalle at Rs 861 normal, Rs 1,292 semi-luxury and Rs 1,651 air-conditioned for the whole route. Route 32-7 runs from Galle to Kataragama at Rs 767 for the whole route. The NTC does not publish the stops, only the two ends, so we cannot say which of these stops at Dikwella.

How to do it without guessing:

  1. Ask at the Tangalle bus stand or at the roadside which bus goes west toward Matara and stops at Dikwella.
  2. Tell the conductor "Dikwella" and "Hiriketiya" and ask the fare before you pay.
  3. Get off in Dikwella town. The bay is about 1.4 km from the middle of town by road on OSRM, so plan a short tuk-tuk or walk for the last part.

We could not verify a last bus time. If you are going for sunset, plan to come back by tuk-tuk or taxi, and agree the return before you set off.

Which is better: bus, tuk-tuk or taxi?

Use this table as a rule of thumb. The prices are not given because there is no official tariff we could quote, and the bus fare for a short ride is set by the conductor.

What should you agree with a tuk-tuk or taxi driver?

There is no official tuk-tuk tariff that we can quote. Our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide makes the same point for another short coast hop. Before you get in:

  • Agree the price for the whole ride and say whether it is per vehicle.
  • Say which bay you want. "Hiriketiya" is the horseshoe bay, and "Dikwella" is the town.
  • Ask the driver to wait if you want a return ride, and agree that price too.
  • Show the driver the place on your phone map if you can.

What is the weather this weekend?

On 23 October 2026 the Department of Meteorology, as reported by Colombo Tribune, said rain would continue in the south-west until 27 October. For 24 October it forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Galle and Matara districts. Hiriketiya is in Matara District. Tangalle is in Hambantota District, and that report did not name Hambantota District for 24 October, so check the forecast yourself on the day. Matara District averages 339.1 mm of rain in October and 333.3 mm in November on the Department of Meteorology's 1991 to 2020 figures, according to our Hiriketiya page. That is a wet shoulder season, so keep a plan B for surf days.
