Horton Plains National Park
A component of the UNESCO-listed Central Highlands and the protected setting for the walk to World's End.
Horton Plains National Park is one of three components of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka World Heritage property, alongside Peak Wilderness Protected Area and Knuckles Conservation Forest. Visit it as a protected highland landscape, not only as a route to one viewpoint.
Why visit Horton Plains National Park?
UNESCO identifies the wider property as globally important for montane forest and biodiversity. That designation does not predict which animals a visitor will see, and this page makes no sighting promise.
What you'll see at Horton Plains National Park
The park contains the walking route to World's End. Confirm current entry, route conditions, permitted hours and any local instructions before setting out. Check the Department of Meteorology forecast close to the visit; old rules about when cloud “always” arrives are not a forecast.
Use Nuwara Eliya as a planning base only if its location and transport options fit the rest of the route. Carry out what you bring in, stay on permitted paths and treat barriers and ranger instructions as safety controls.
Is Horton Plains National Park worth visiting?
Worth an early start for the World's End walk and the plains' quiet landscape. Access, weather and visibility decide the day, so keep a fallback.
Where Horton Plains National Park fits in your route
Base the visit on Nuwara Eliya and read the World's End page for the viewpoint walk itself.
Horton Plains is one component of the UNESCO Central Highlands, not a synonym for the entire property.
Rules to follow on site
The plains are a strictly protected area: stay on the marked trail and carry everything out. Confirm tickets, opening hours and weather with the park authority before you set out.
