Hiriketiya Weather November: Waves, Rain, Which Break

Hiriketiya in November: rain on the long-term record, which of the bay's two breaks suits which surfer, how to read the sea forecast, and a wet-weather plan for the Dikwella strip. Checked 24 October 2026.

What is Hiriketiya weather like in November?

Quick answer: Wet, warm and changeable. Hiriketiya is at Dikwella in Matara District, which averages 333.3 mm of rain in November. Daily highs sit near 30 C. The sea is the bigger question than the rain: November is the second inter-monsoon, when Sri Lanka Tourism says seas can be rough, and the calm-sea months it names start in December. Beginners can still learn on the sandy beach break with a coach. The reef is for experienced surfers only.

This page is about the weather and sea. Our Hiriketiya destination page has the bay layout, lesson prices, where to stay and how to get there, and the surfing guide has the safety checks for any break.

How wet is November in Hiriketiya compared with October and December?

Hiriketiya has no weather station. We use the Matara District average, plus the Galle station to the west and the Hambantota station to the east.

What this says:

  • November rain is as high as October's on the district average. It drops by about 40 percent in December.
  • The "heavy rain days" (10 mm or more) tell the story better than the monthly total. At Hambantota, the eastern end of this coast, November has more of them than October. At Galle, the western end, November has fewer. Hiriketiya is in between, so expect a mix.
  • Heat hardly changes. Highs are near 30 C in all three months, so rain and sea, not temperature, decide the trip.

For 2026, the Department of Meteorology's outlook issued on 2 October said above-normal rain was more likely for most of the country in November. We quote that from our November planning guide. It is a lean, not a forecast for your week.

Which break should you surf in Hiriketiya in November?

Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe bay with two different breaks. Dots Bay House describes a beach break for beginners and a reef break toward the left for intermediate and advanced surfers. Hiri Surf School says all of its beginner lessons stay in waist-deep, sandy areas of the bay. No source we found gives a swell height for the bay in November, so we give none.

Use this table on the day. The sea words come from the Department of Meteorology's sea-area forecast. The advice column is ours, not an official scale.

Before you pay, ask the school three things: where the lesson will take place, what happens if the sea is too strong, and whether a refund or a new date is offered. Hiri Surf School says on its site that safety comes first and its instructors will advise on or reschedule a session when conditions are not suitable. Prices on 24 October 2026 were LKR 5,000 for a group lesson, LKR 6,000 semi-private and LKR 8,000 private per guest, each 1 hour 15 minutes with board, leash and rash guard included. Those are dated samples, not a pick.

What was the Hiriketiya sea forecast on 24 October 2026?

This is a one-day snapshot of the shoulder season before November, and it will be out of date when you read it. The Department of Meteorology's sea-area forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. said:

  • Showers or thundershowers at several places in the sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara.
  • South-westerly winds of 30 to 40 kmph, rising to 50 to 60 kmph at times.
  • Sea that may be rough at times along the coast from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil, with gusts of 60 to 70 kmph and very rough seas during thundershowers.
  • A low-pressure area near the North Andaman Islands expected to become a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of 26 October. It was not expected to hit Sri Lanka directly, but more rain was expected in the south-west.

For the land forecast, the Southern Province was not in the list of provinces with showers at times. The bulletin said showers or thundershowers would come after 1.00 p.m. "elsewhere" on the island, with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm likely at some places in those areas. That is one day's forecast, not a November rule.

What does a sensible November surf day look like?

This is the planning tool this page adds. It is a suggested day, not a schedule from any business, and it keeps the weather risk away from your fixed plans.

Part of daySuggested planWhy
Early morningBook the lesson for the first slot you are offered. Hiri Surf School lists lessons from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PMThe school says mornings can have cleaner conditions and fewer people. That is its own view, not a count
Late morningBreakfast and a rest. Check the Department's bulletin and your phone for warningsGives you time to decide on a second session
Midday to afternoonKeep it free for rain. Errands in Dikwella, laundry, yoga or a napIf the afternoon turns wet, you lose nothing
Late afternoonOptional second session if the sea has settled and your coach agreesDo not book it in advance in a wet month

If you plan three lesson days, book them with a rest day between and hold one more day free. The operator's 3-day package is listed at LKR 21,000 (one 1 hour 15 minute session a day), which makes sense if you book it once the first day goes well, not before you arrive.

What can you do in Hiriketiya when it rains?

Not much is sourced inside the bay, so we keep this short and honest. Dikwella town beside the bay has the shops and services, and the coastal road leads east to Tangalle and west to Mirissa. Our south coast yoga guide lists studios near Hiriketiya with their own details. For room price samples, see Hiriketiya and Mirissa guest houses. If you would rather have a wide bay with more beginner schools, compare Weligama.

Do not plan a fixed whale-boat morning and a hotel move on the same day. The Navy lists southern whale cruises from Galle from November to April (Navy whale-watching site), and boat trips can be cancelled in rough weather.

Should you choose November or December for Hiriketiya?

If the weather is your first concern, December wins. If you can stay flexible and want to arrive before the peak months, November works with spare days. For the next month, see Sri Lanka in December, and for the wider picture of why the south coast changes in December, the Sri Lanka monsoon seasons guide. If you are still planning the coast as a whole, the south coast guide and getting around Sri Lanka cover the route.

What does this page not tell you?

  • It does not give wave heights, water temperature or a crowd count. We found no official source for Hiriketiya.
  • It does not give weekly rain, only monthly averages and counts.
  • It does not recommend a school. Prices are dated samples from one operator's own page.
  • It does not say that the reef is safe in any month. Ask a local on the day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weather in Hiriketiya in November?

Warm, humid and wet. Matara District, which includes Hiriketiya at Dikwella, averages 333.3 mm of rain in November on the Department of Meteorology's 1991 to 2020 figures. The long-term records at Galle and Hambantota put daily highs near 30 C in November. Sri Lanka Tourism calls October and November the second inter-monsoon, with occasional heavy showers.

Can you surf in Hiriketiya in November?

Yes, beginners can take lessons on the beach break, but it depends on the day's sea. Sri Lanka Tourism describes the south-west calendar as calm from November to March, while also warning that seas can be rough in the second inter-monsoon. Hiri Surf School says it checks conditions daily and reschedules when the sea is not suitable.

Is Hiriketiya good for beginners in November?

On the beach break, yes, with a coach. Hiri Surf School says all beginner lessons stay in waist-deep, sandy areas of the bay. Dots Bay House puts intermediate and advanced surfers on the reef break to the left. Beginners should not paddle onto the reef.

How much rain does Hiriketiya get in November?

On the district average, 333.3 mm, almost the same as October (339.1 mm) and about 40 percent more than December (200.3 mm). Scaled to a 7-night stay, the Galle and Hambantota station records suggest about 3 to 4 days with at least 1 mm of rain. That is an average, not a forecast.

Is it crowded in Hiriketiya in November?

We found no official crowd data. Sri Lanka Tourism calls December to February the peak season on the south-west coast, so November comes just before it. Hiri Surf School says morning sessions can be less crowded, which is an operator's view, not a count.

How do I read the sea forecast for Hiriketiya?

Use the Department of Meteorology's sea-area forecast for the coast off Matara and Hambantota. On 24 October 2026 it said the sea off that coast may be rough at times, with very rough seas during thundershowers. Treat the words rough and very rough as a reason to skip the reef and to ask your coach whether to surf at all.

What can I do in Hiriketiya when it rains?

Not much is sourced in the bay itself. Dickwella town beside the bay has the shops and services, and Tangalle is on the coast road to the east. Our south coast yoga guide lists studios near Hiriketiya. Keep one flexible day for travel or rest.

Is November better than December in Hiriketiya?

December is the drier month on the averages and is in Sri Lanka Tourism's peak season, so for weather December wins. November costs you more rain risk but is before the peak months. Neither month gives a guaranteed sea, so keep your plan flexible.
