- Day 6

Can you do Sri Lanka in 2 weeks by public transport?
Quick answer: Yes. This 14-day route goes Negombo, Kandy, Sigiriya, back to Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Mirissa and Galle, all by bus, with tuk-tuks for the last kilometre. The four long legs with official fares cost Rs 2,489 in total on normal buses. It does not rely on the hill country train, which was suspended between Rambukkana and Gampola on 25 October 2026.
This page is for travellers who want to go without a private driver. If you are going with older parents or small children, the car-based 9-day route with parents is easier. For a faster bus and car loop, see the 10-day solo route.
What does the 14-day route look like?
| Days | Base | Nights | Main sights |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Negombo | 1 | Rest after the flight |
| 2 to 3 | Kandy | 2 | Temple of the Tooth, lake |
| 4 to 6 | Sigiriya | 3 | Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa |
| 7 | Kandy | 1 | Break the trip south |
| 8 to 9 | Nuwara Eliya | 2 | Horton Plains |
| 10 to 11 | Ella | 2 | Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arch Bridge |
| 12 to 13 | Mirissa | 2 | Beach, Galle Fort |
| 14 | Galle, then out | 0 | Airport |
The second night in Kandy on day 7 is there on purpose. Going from Sigiriya straight to Nuwara Eliya by bus means at least two changes and a long day on mountain roads. Splitting it makes both days easy.
How much do the buses cost?
These are the NTC fares for the long legs, in force since 6 July 2026:
| Day | Leg | Route | Normal | Semi-luxury | AC | Expressway luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Negombo to Kandy | 1/245 | Rs 513 | none | Rs 1,002 | none |
| 10 | Nuwara Eliya to Welimada | 311-2 | Rs 177 | none | none | none |
| 12 | Badulla to Matara (board at Ella) | 31-2 | Rs 989 | none | none | none |
| 14 | Matara to Katunayake (board at Galle) | 2/187 | Rs 810 | none | none | none |
| 14 | Galle to Negombo, expressway | EX 1-33/270 | none | none | none | Rs 1,370 |
On normal buses, the four long legs add up to Rs 2,489. Because you board days 12 and 14 partway along, you should pay less than the full fare there. Ask the conductor for the fare to your stop.
Not on the NTC list. Kandy to Dambulla, Dambulla to Sigiriya, Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa, Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, Welimada to Ella and Matara to Mirissa are buses inside one province, so the NTC inter-provincial list does not cover them. Ask at the bus stand, and keep small notes for the conductor.

What about the train?
On 25 October 2026, Newswire and the Daily Mirror reported that train services between Rambukkana, Peradeniya and Gampola were suspended until further notice. The Sri Lanka Railways website did not load when we checked on 26 October 2026, so this page gives no train times or fares.
That is why this route is planned by road. The suspended section is on the main line between Rambukkana and Gampola, well before Nanu Oya. We could not confirm on 26 October 2026 whether trains are running further up the line, between Nanu Oya and Ella. If they are, you could swap the train in for day 10; our Nanu Oya to Ella train guide and Nanu Oya to Nuwara Eliya guide cover that part. Check the official status the day before you travel.
Days 1 to 3: Negombo and Kandy
Negombo is the easy first night because it is about 11 km and 15 minutes from the airport by road. On day 2, take NTC route 1/245 to Kandy. It is about 116 km and 2 hours 10 minutes by road with no traffic.
On day 3, walk Kandy. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is beside the lake. The UK government says to cover your legs and shoulders and take off shoes and hats in Buddhist temples.
Days 4 to 7: Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa
Go from Kandy to Dambulla (about 72 km), then on to Sigiriya (about 17 km). Stay three nights so you are not rushing:
- Day 5. Sigiriya rock early, then the Dambulla Cave Temple, 17 km and 23 minutes away.
- Day 6. Polonnaruwa, 53 km and 1 hour 2 minutes each way by road.
- Day 7. Back to Kandy via Dambulla.
Ticket prices for these sites are listed in our entry ticket prices guide. The Central Cultural Fund website did not load for us on 26 October 2026, so we did not repeat its prices here.
Days 8 to 11: Nuwara Eliya and Ella
Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is about 75 km and 1 hour 34 minutes by road with no traffic. On day 9, Horton Plains and World's End are best at dawn. No public bus fits that start, so share a car or tuk-tuk from town.
On day 10, take route 311-2 to Welimada (Rs 177), then a local bus on to Ella. The full road trip from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is about 54 km and 1 hour 7 minutes with no traffic. On day 11, walk to Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge.
Days 12 to 14: Mirissa, Galle and the airport
Day 12 is the longest bus day. Board the Badulla to Matara bus (route 31-2) at Ella and change at Matara for Mirissa. The road trip is about 178 km and 2 hours 54 minutes with no traffic. Leave early so you arrive in daylight.
On day 13, Galle Fort is about 33 km and 36 minutes away by road. On day 14, take a bus from Galle towards Katunayake (route 2/187) or the expressway service to Negombo (EX 1-33/270), then a short tuk-tuk to the airport. Galle to the airport is about 151 km and 2 hours by road with no traffic, so allow much longer by bus before a flight.
How do you ride Sri Lankan buses safely?
The UK government's travel advice says public buses are often driven fast, rarely give way and are often poorly maintained, and that there have been serious bus accidents. It also says crowded places, including buses and bus stations, are where harassment and pickpocketing are most often reported. So:
- Travel in daylight. The advice also says road accidents are frequent, especially at night.
- Keep your bag with you. A small bag on your lap is safer than one in the rack.
- Think about a transfer for the longest day. The same advice says tourist buses are usually driven more professionally, though standards can vary.
- Allow for weather. The same advice says heavy rain and landslips can close roads and affect transport. Check the news before hill country days.
How do tuk-tuks fit in?
Bus stands are often a short ride from your guesthouse. In Western Province, the tuk-tuk fare reported in March 2026 is Rs 110 for the first km and Rs 90 for each km after. Outside that province, use it as a benchmark and agree the price first. See our tuk-tuk fares guide and the Colombo airport arrival guide.
How can you change the route?
- Add the east coast. From Ella, Arugam Bay is about 133 km by road; see the Arugam Bay to Ella guide.
- Cut it to 10 days. Drop day 7 and one Nuwara Eliya night, or follow the 10-day solo route.
- Plan more days. See how many days you need in Sri Lanka and the 2-week standard pace itinerary.
