What is the best 3-week itinerary for Sri Lanka?
Quick answer: Do a loop. Spend the first week on the ancient cities (Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa), the second on Kandy, the hill country and a Yala safari, and the third slowly on the south coast. From May to September, swap the south coast week for the east coast, which is drier then.
Three weeks is the length where Sri Lanka stops feeling rushed. You can give the Cultural Triangle three full days, sleep two nights in most places, and still keep a week for the beach. If you have less time, start with how many days you need in Sri Lanka or the one-week first visit.
What does the route look like, day by day?

| 14 to 15 | Tangalle | 2 | Quiet bays | Road |
| 16 to 17 | Mirissa | 2 | Whale boat (November to April) | Road or Coast Line train |

How should you handle Kandy to Ella in October 2026?
Do not plan on a through train. As of 17 October 2026, the Kandy to Ella line was not running through. This route goes from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by road, then uses the Nanu Oya to Ella train for the section that runs. If that section is also disrupted on your date, the Kandy to Ella by road guide has the alternatives. The Kandy to Ella train guide is where we track the line's status.
Which version should you pick for your month?
The south coast and the east coast have opposite seasons. These long-term averages show why (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations):
| Month | Galle rain (mm) | Trincomalee rain (mm) | Anuradhapura rain (mm) | Version to pick |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 86.8 | 152.4 | 86.0 | South coast |
| Feb | 71.1 | 96.1 | 60.1 | South coast |
| Mar | 89.9 | 54.8 | 62.1 | Either; both coasts work |
| Apr | 201.9 | 48.1 | 180.1 | East coast, or south with showers |
| May | 315.9 | 71.8 | 93.8 | East coast |
| Jun | 184.0 | 25.9 | 15.4 | East coast |
| Jul | 172.6 | 51.0 | 23.6 | East coast |
| Aug | 161.9 | 66.6 | 42.6 | East coast |
| Sep | 260.9 | 112.6 | 66.5 | East coast |
| Oct | 344.5 | 215.6 | 259.0 | Wet everywhere; keep plans flexible |
| Nov | 282.6 | 375.6 | 281.4 | Wet everywhere; south improves late in the month |
| Dec | 175.9 | 339.0 | 224.6 | South coast |
Sri Lanka Tourism calls December to February the "peak tourist season on the southwest coast" and May to September the "best time to explore the dry zone: Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, and Jaffna" (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page). For month detail, read Sri Lanka in February, March or April, or the best time to visit guide.
What is the east coast version for May to September?
Keep days 1 to 12 the same, then swap the south for the east:
| Days | Base | Nights | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 to 14 | Arugam Bay | 2 | Surf season on the east coast; road from Ella |
| 15 to 16 | Batticaloa | 2 | Lagoon town on the way north |
| 17 to 20 | Trincomalee | 4 | Beaches and whale boats; the Navy runs its cruises from Trincomalee from May to October |
| 21 | Colombo | Long road day back, or fly out after a night near the airport |
The east coast itinerary and the east coast vs south coast guide have more detail. On 17 October 2026, whalewatching.navy.lk listed the seasonal calendar and did not state a pause; confirm sailings there.

Frequently asked questions
Is 3 weeks enough for Sri Lanka?
Yes. Three weeks is enough for the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country, a safari and a slow week on the coast without rushing. It also fits inside the 30-day stay that Sri Lanka's ETA gives most visitors.
What is the best 3-week route in Sri Lanka?
A loop works best. From the airport go north to Anuradhapura and Sigiriya, south to Kandy and the hills, down to Yala, then west along the south coast through Tangalle, Mirissa, Weligama and Unawatuna, finishing near Colombo.
Can you take the train from Kandy to Ella?
Not all the way as of 17 October 2026, because the line was not running through. This plan goes from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by road and uses the Nanu Oya to Ella train for the section that runs. Check the status for your date before you travel.
When is the best time for a 3-week trip to Sri Lanka?
December to March for this south and west version. On the WMO normals, Galle averages 71.1 mm of rain in February against 315.9 mm in May. From May to September, swap the south coast week for the east coast, where Trincomalee averages 25.9 mm in June.
What should I change for a 3-week trip from May to September?
Replace the south coast week with Trincomalee and the east coast. Sri Lanka Tourism calls May to September the best time to explore the dry zone, naming Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna. The Navy also runs its whale cruises from Trincomalee from May to October.
How much does 3 weeks in Sri Lanka cost?
It depends on hotels and drivers, which we did not price. The fixed costs we checked on 17 October 2026 include the ETA, free for 40 countries and US$50 for most others, and the Navy's whale cruise at US$80 for a foreign adult. Ask for written quotes for the rest.
Do I need a visa for 3 weeks in Sri Lanka?
Every visitor needs an Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival. The Department of Immigration and Emigration says it allows a stay of up to 30 days with double entry, which covers a 21-day trip.
Can I add Jaffna or Kalpitiya to a 3-week trip?
Yes, but swap something out. Jaffna fits after Anuradhapura if you drop two south coast nights. Kalpitiya, about 150 km north of Colombo, fits at the start for kitesurfing from mid-December to mid-March or mid-May to mid-October.
