What is the Holy Cross shrine in Marawila?
The National Shrine of the Holy Cross, known locally as Kurusa Palliya, belongs to the Diocese of Chilaw, according to GCatholic. The Sunday Times described it in 2014 as a simple open building with a sandy floor, standing in the cemetery of the Church of Our Lady of Presentation, about 350 m up the road. You can see the sea over its low wall.
Inside is a life-size statue of Christ on the cross. The paper reported that the statue was ordered from Bangalore by Fr. Ferdinand Thiri, parish priest from 1909 to 1924. It also said the shrine is open day and night and draws people of all faiths, not only Catholics. The Wayamba site calls it a sacred Catholic place near the beach where many come to pray. The Chilaw diocese has a second national shrine, St Anne's at Talawila, further north.
Dress modestly, keep quiet and avoid taking photos of people praying. Our Christian heritage guide covers churches and shrines elsewhere in Sri Lanka.
