Kalpitiya
A peninsula between Puttalam Lagoon and the Indian Ocean, about 150 km north of Colombo, with two kitesurfing seasons, dolphin pods offshore and bar reefs. Wind, not beach weather, sets the calendar here.
Is Kalpitiya worth visiting?
Quick answer: Yes, if you come for wind or wildlife. Kalpitiya is a flat, sandy peninsula about 150 km north of Colombo with two kitesurfing seasons (mid-May to mid-October and mid-December to mid-March) and spinner dolphin pods offshore from about November to April. It is not a classic swim-and-sunbathe beach town, so plan your days around the wind and the boat trips.
SLTDA describes the Kalpitiya region as "150km (93 miles) north of Colombo", a peninsula "that separates the Puttalam lagoon from the Indian Ocean" and "a marine sanctuary with a diversity of habitats - bar reefs, coastal plains, saltpans, mangroves swamps, salt marshes, and sandduned beaches" (SLTDA key development projects). SLTDA groups it in its "West Coast Resort Region" with Marawila and Waikkala. On this site it sits under the Colombo and west coast region.
When is the best time to visit Kalpitiya?
It depends on what you want. Kalpitiya has two wind seasons, and they line up with the two driest stretches on the long-term rain record for Puttalam, the nearest WMO station (WMO normals, Sri Lanka stations). "Rain days" counts days with at least 1 mm.
| Month | Rain (mm) | Rain days | High C (F) | Low C (F) |

| Jan | 50.5 | 5.6 | 30.7 (87) | 21.4 (71) |

| Season | Dates (Kiteclub Kalpitiya) | Wind | Puttalam rain | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer kite season | Mid-May to mid-October | All day, 18 to 20 knots, sometimes up to 30 | June to August is the driest stretch, 23 to 32 mm a month | Kiting all day, experienced riders |
| Winter kite season | Mid-December to mid-March | Afternoons, 15 to 25 knots | January to March, 42 to 57 mm a month | Morning dolphin trips plus afternoon kiting |
| Between seasons | Mid-October to mid-December | Not a kite season | October and November are the wettest months, 230.6 and 254.6 mm | Avoid for kiting |
Kiteclub says that in winter "mornings are ideal for yoga, diving, and dolphin and whale watching tours", with water at 25 to 27 C, and that no wetsuit is needed in either season (Kiteclub Kalpitiya). Why this matters: Kalpitiya's driest months (June to August) fall in the south-west monsoon, when the Galle station averages 162 to 184 mm a month. That makes Kalpitiya a good July or August stop when Unawatuna and Weligama are out of season.
How much does kitesurfing cost in Kalpitiya?
These are one resort's published rates, last updated 17 July 2026 and read on 17 October 2026 (Valampuri Resort rates). They are a dated sample, not a market average. LKR figures use the Central Bank's buying rate for 16 October 2026 (LKR 365.01 per euro) and are rounded.
| Item | Private | Group | About (LKR, private) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lesson, per hour | €50 | €35 | 18,300 |
| 3-hour refresher | €160 | €120 | 58,400 |
| 6-hour course | €300 | €210 | 109,500 |
| 9-hour course | €390 | Not listed | 142,400 |
| Kite and stay package, 3 nights | From €245 per person (2 sharing, 6-hour group course) | 89,400 | |
| Room only | From €18 per person per night | 6,600 |
Valampuri says its lesson packages include half board, boat transfers to the kite area, walkie-talkie coaching, rescue boat cover and IKO certification. Other schools may charge more or less, and we did not check them all.
How many hours do beginners need? Schools sell beginner courses in 6- and 9-hour blocks. On Valampuri's prices, the step from a 6-hour to a 9-hour private course costs €90 more.
Can you see dolphins and whales from Kalpitiya?
Yes, mainly between November and April. The sources differ slightly on dates:
| Source | Dolphins | Whales |
|---|---|---|
| Kalpitiya Diving Center | Large pods between November and mid-April; spinner dolphins along the "Dolphin Line", humpback dolphins seen regularly | Not dated |
| International Whaling Commission handbook | Spinner dolphins October to March | Sperm whale aggregations in March |
| Sri Lanka Tourism | Spinner dolphins within an hour's boat ride of the harbour; Risso's, bottlenose and striped dolphins less often | Sperm, blue, pygmy sperm and pilot whales in pods of 50 to 100, many around the Dutch reef; season "in full swing by January" |
Sources: Kalpitiya Diving Center, IWC handbook and Sri Lanka Tourism, whale and dolphin watching, all read 17 October 2026.
Dated price sample: Kalpitiya Diving Center listed US$90 per boat for up to 6 people, with life jackets and water, plus a Department of Wildlife Conservation ticket of US$10 per foreign person. For a full boat of 6, that is US$15 each for the boat plus US$10 each for the ticket, about US$25 (about LKR 8,200) per person. With 2 people, it is US$55 each (about LKR 18,000). LKR figures use the Central Bank's buying rate for 16 October 2026 (LKR 326.67 per US dollar).
Sri Lanka's rules on approaching whales and dolphins apply here too: boats must slow down as they approach and keep their distance, and no one may enter the water with the animals. The whale watching in Sri Lanka page sets out the legal distances and red flags, and the Mirissa destination page has the three-harbour table.
What else is there to do in Kalpitiya?
- Bar reefs and diving: SLTDA lists bar reefs among the peninsula's habitats, and Kalpitiya Diving Center runs dive trips. Check sea conditions, which change with the monsoon.
- Lagoon, mangroves and saltpans: SLTDA lists mangrove swamps, salt marshes and saltpans along the lagoon side.
- Wilpattu National Park: the national park on this north-western side of the island pairs well with a Kalpitiya stay. See Wilpattu National Park for entry and safari planning.
- Combine with the Cultural Triangle: Anuradhapura is inland to the north-east, so Kalpitiya can sit between Negombo and the ancient cities on a longer trip.
How do you get to Kalpitiya?
By road for the last part, whatever you choose. SLTDA puts Kalpitiya about 150 km north of Colombo. The Puttalam railway line runs up the coast from Colombo, but the peninsula itself has no station.
| From Colombo Fort to | Distance by rail | 1st (LKR) | 2nd (LKR) | 3rd (LKR) |
