There is no single best beach in Sri Lanka for every date and activity. Choose the coast that fits your route, then check the Department of Meteorology's current marine information and local conditions for the exact beach before swimming or booking a water activity.

Start with the trip, not a universal season slogan
Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology describes four broad rainfall periods and substantial regional variation. That supports route-by-date planning, but rainfall season alone does not prove calm water, safe swimming, surf quality or boat operation at a specific beach.
Compare the south coast, east coast, and Colombo and west coast by the places and activities you want. Then verify the actual conditions close to travel. Named bases serve different purposes: Arugam Bay as an east-coast surf base, Mirissa, Hiriketiya and Tangalle as south-coast stays, and Hikkaduwa for reef and surf on the south-west coast.
Match the beach to the activity
- Swimming: look for current lifeguard or local safety information, flags, currents and designated areas.
- Surfing: match the specific break and conditions to the surfer's real ability; use the surfing guide for the decision checklist.
- Snorkelling or diving: verify operator credentials, marine access, visibility and sea state; see diving and snorkelling.
- Whale watching: treat it as a regulated boat activity, not a beach add-on; use the whale-watching guide.
- A quiet coastal stay: choose a real town and accommodation area rather than assuming a whole coast has one atmosphere.
Check before entering the water
The Department of Meteorology provides marine and sea-weather information. Also follow warnings, flags and instructions at the beach. A clear morning, an old seasonal chart or another traveller's experience cannot guarantee safe conditions now.

A south-east coast surf bay beside Pottuvil in Ampara District. Surf season runs roughly April to October, and the area's dry season falls in the south-west monsoon, May to September.

Bentota

Galle
A south-coast city anchored by the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications, distinct from a wider beach-route stop.
Hambantota
A deep-south transport and service centre that can support coastal, wetland or safari routing when the exact access points fit.
Hikkaduwa
A south-coast beach town known for its reef and surf breaks, on the west side of the South Coast region closer to Galle than to Mirissa.
Hiriketiya
A small horseshoe surf bay at Dikwella in Matara District on Sri Lanka's south coast. Beginner beach break and left reef in one bay, with Dickwella folded into the same stay.
Kalpitiya
A peninsula between Puttalam Lagoon and the Indian Ocean, about 150 km north of Colombo, with two kitesurfing seasons, dolphin pods offshore and bar reefs. Wind, not beach weather, sets the calendar here.
Mirissa

Negombo
An airport-adjacent west-coast town where a stopover can focus on the lagoon, fishing context, town heritage or beach time.
Tangalle
A south-coast town serving several distinct bays, best chosen by exact beach, current sea conditions and onward route.
Trincomalee
An east-coast harbour city combining beaches, protected marine access and active sacred or heritage places.
Unawatuna
A reef-sheltered, semi-circular bay about 5 km south-east of Galle, with Rumassala hill, Jungle Beach and wreck dives next door. Best from December to March on the long-term rain record.
Weligama
A wide, sandy bay on the south coast between Galle and Mirissa, known for beginner surf lessons, stilt fishermen and Taprobane Island. Surf season runs November to March.
