Sri Lanka's Award-Winning Beaches 2026

Four Sri Lankan beaches made Condé Nast Traveller's 2026 Best beaches in Asia top 20: Arugam Bay (1st), Bentota (9th), Tangalle (14th) and Negombo (19th). Scores, best months for each and how to fit them into a trip from the UK, checked 16 October 2026.

Which Sri Lankan beaches are the best in Asia for 2026?

Quick answer: Arugam Bay was voted the best beach in Asia for 2026 by Condé Nast Traveller readers. Bentota came 9th, Tangalle 14th and Negombo 19th, so Sri Lanka has four beaches in the Asia top 20. Visit Bentota, Tangalle and Negombo from November to March. Visit Arugam Bay from April to October.

The Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards are in their 29th edition. The magazine says the 2026 results are based only on votes from its UK readers. That makes this list a good guide to what British travellers enjoyed. It is not a weather forecast or a safety rating, so match each beach to the right month before you book.

9Bentota88.33South-westNovember to March; peak December to February
14Tangalle83.33SouthNovember to March; peak December to February
19Negombo78.92WestNovember to March; peak December to February

For context, Railay Beach in Thailand was second in Asia (94.44) and Coral Beach on Pangkor Island, Malaysia, was third (93.33).

Why do the best months differ between these beaches?

Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit opposite sides of the island. Sri Lanka Tourism says the north-east winds make the south-western coast sunny with a calm sea from November to March, and that December to February is the peak season there. During the south-west monsoon, May to September, it points travellers to the dry zone, which includes Arugam Bay. Sri Lanka Tourism gives Arugam Bay's surf season as April to October.

So the four winners split into two groups:

  • West and south coasts (Bentota, Tangalle, Negombo): best in the UK winter, November to March.
  • East coast (Arugam Bay): best in the UK spring and summer, April to October.

The best time to visit guide explains both monsoons month by month, and the east coast vs south coast guide helps you choose a side.

How wet is each beach's district at the end of the year?

These are the Department of Meteorology's average rainfall figures (1991 to 2020) for the district each beach is in. They show why Arugam Bay is an off-season choice in late autumn while the west and south get drier.

TangalleHambantota188.7 mm275.3 mm167.2 mm
NegomboGampaha359.8 mm308.7 mm138.2 mm

By December, Negombo's district and Tangalle's district are much drier than Arugam Bay's. The Met Department's October to December 2026 outlook, issued on 2 October 2026, also expects slightly above-normal rain in most of the country this December, so keep a spare day in your plan.

What is Arugam Bay like, and when should you go?

Arugam Bay is a surf bay beside the town of Pottuvil on the east coast. Sri Lanka Tourism describes a wide white beach, clear water and a fishing community, and names four main surf points. It is the top-ranked beach in Asia on this year's list, with 98.84.

Go between April and October. The driest months are May to September. From November to March it is the off season, and December to February brings the north-east monsoon rain. Our Arugam Bay page has a full section on the off season, with where to surf instead. If you are a surfer, the surfing guide matches breaks to your level.

What is Bentota like, and when should you go?

Bentota is on the south-west coast, in Galle District. It ranked 9th in Asia with 88.33. We do not have a separate Bentota page yet, so this guide sticks to the facts we have checked. It sits on the stretch of coast that Sri Lanka Tourism calls sunny and calm from November to March, with the peak from December to February. That makes it a natural fit for a UK winter trip. Combine it with the rest of the south coast or the Colombo and west coast region.

What is Tangalle like, and when should you go?

Tangalle is a set of quiet bays on the south coast, about 195 km from Colombo, according to Sri Lanka Tourism. It came 14th with 83.33. Sri Lanka Tourism names Goyambokka and Pallikkudawa south of the town, and Medaketiya and Medilla beyond the harbour. Go from November to March. Tangalle can also be a base on the way to the deep south's safari parks, and our south coast itinerary ends there.

What is Negombo like, and when should you go?

Negombo is a beach and lagoon town close to Bandaranaike International Airport, Sri Lanka's main international airport. It came 19th with 78.92. It works well for the first or last night of a trip. Go from November to March, when the west coast is sunniest. In Gampaha District, where Negombo is, average December rain falls to 138.2 mm.

Can you see more than one winner on a single trip?

Yes, but plan by season.

  • A UK winter trip (November to March): fly into Colombo, rest in Negombo, then head down to Bentota and on to Tangalle. Add Mirissa or Hiriketiya between them. See Sri Lanka in December for Christmas and New Year planning.
  • A UK summer trip (May to September): spend your beach days at Arugam Bay. Negombo still works for your airport night.
  • April and October: these are in-between months. Arugam Bay's surf season is open, and the south and west coasts are outside their main season. Check the forecast close to your dates.

Can you go whale watching from these beaches?

The Sri Lanka Navy's southern whale-watching season runs from November to April, sailing from Galle. That overlaps with the best months for Bentota and Tangalle. On 16 October 2026 the Navy said its cruises were paused for routine ship maintenance with no restart date, so check the Navy whale-watching site before you book. Our whale watching guide covers the island-wide picture. Sightings are never guaranteed.

How should UK travellers use this list?

Treat the ranking as a shortlist, then choose by month. Readers voted for these beaches, but a vote does not tell you whether the sea is calm on your dates. Before you swim, check the Department of Meteorology's marine information and any local warnings for the exact beach. Our beaches and coastal travel guide explains those checks.
