- Day 3
Mirissa

7 and 10 day routes. Two nights at the horseshoe surf bay at Dickwella.
- Day 8
Tangalle
10 day route only. Two nights on the quieter bays further east, the base for a Yala day.

How many days do you need on the south coast? (Checked 15 October 2026)
Quick answer: five days covers Galle and Mirissa, seven adds Weligama and Hiriketiya, and ten lets you continue east to Tangalle and a Yala safari. For 5 days, stay in Galle and Mirissa. For 7 days, add a Weligama surf day and two nights in Hiriketiya. For 10 days, keep going to Tangalle. Travel east along the coast so you never backtrack.
| 5 days | 7 days | 10 days | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bases | Galle, Mirissa | Galle, Mirissa, Hiriketiya | Galle, Mirissa, Hiriketiya, Tangalle |
| Nights | 2 + 2 | 2 + 2 + 2 | 2 + 3 + 2 + 2 |
| Highlights | Galle Fort, Mirissa beach, Weligama surf lesson | Adds the Hiriketiya surf bay | Adds quiet Tangalle bays and a Yala safari day |
| Hotel moves | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| Best for | A beach add-on to a longer trip | A full beach week | A slow coast trip with wildlife |
Day counts include your arrival and departure days. Each route starts with the drive or bus from Colombo or the airport. Weligama has no separate base on this page: it is a short ride from Mirissa, so most people visit it as a day trip.
What is the best 5-day south coast route?
Galle for two nights, then Mirissa for two. This is the classic short loop and needs only one hotel move.
| Day | Base | What to do | Travel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Galle | Arrive, walk the fort walls at sunset | Colombo or airport to Galle on the expressway |
| 2 | Galle | Galle Fort streets, lighthouse, a swim at Unawatuna | Short tuk-tuk to Unawatuna |
| 3 | Mirissa | Move east, beach afternoon | Galle to Mirissa on the coast road |
| 4 | Mirissa | Weligama surf lesson in the morning, Mirissa sunset | Short ride to Weligama and back |
| 5 | Leave | Whale boat at dawn if in season, then head back | Expressway back to Colombo or the airport |
Galle Fort is the anchor. UNESCO lists the Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications as "the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia" (UNESCO). Stay inside the walls if you want to walk them at dawn and dusk; stay at Unawatuna if swimming matters more. Our Galle and Galle Fort pages cover what to see.
Mirissa is the beach and boat stop. On day 5, a dawn whale trip only works between November and April, and only if your boat is sailing. Keep the trip on a day without a long transfer after it, or move it to day 4. Our Mirissa page compares boats and prices.
What does a 7-day south coast route look like?
Galle, Mirissa and Hiriketiya, two nights each. You get the fort, a whale or surf day, and a small surf bay further east.
| Day | Base | What to do | Travel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Galle | Arrive, fort walls at sunset | Colombo or airport to Galle |
| 2 | Galle | Fort, Unawatuna beach | Local tuk-tuk |
| 3 | Mirissa | Move east, stop at Weligama bay on the way | Coast road |
| 4 | Mirissa | Whale boat (November to April) or a Weligama surf lesson | Harbour or short ride |
| 5 | Hiriketiya | Move east past Matara to Dickwella, beach afternoon | Coast road |
| 6 | Hiriketiya | Surf lesson in the bay, or a lazy beach day | Walk |
| 7 | Leave | Head back to Colombo or the airport | Expressway from Matara |
Weligama is the easy place to learn. The Southern Province's tourist bureau says Weligama is "located just 10-15 minutes from Mirissa", that its soft, long waves suit beginners, and that its best surf season is November to April (Southern Sri Lanka, surfing). Base yourself in Mirissa and ride over for the lesson.
Hiriketiya is a compact horseshoe bay at Dickwella, between Mirissa and Tangalle. Hiri Surf School says its beginner lessons stay in "waist-deep, safe sandy areas of Hiriketiya Bay" (Hiri Surf School). Our Hiriketiya page covers the bay, lessons and where to stay. The surfing guide has the safety checks that apply to every break.
What can you add with 10 days?
Slow down in Mirissa, then continue east to Tangalle and give Yala a day.
| Day | Base | What to do | Travel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Galle | Arrive; fort and Unawatuna | Colombo or airport to Galle |
| 3 to 5 | Mirissa | Beach, Weligama surf lesson, whale boat in season | Coast road |
| 6 to 7 | Hiriketiya | Surf bay, Dickwella | Coast road |
| 8 | Tangalle | Move east, quiet bay afternoon | Short road transfer |
| 9 | Tangalle | Yala safari day | Early start by road to the park |
| 10 | Leave | Head back to Colombo or the airport | Long road day; leave early |
Tangalle has several quieter bays and sits closer to the safari parks. See our Tangalle page and pick the exact bay, not just the town.
Yala is the add-on most people ask about. The park has been closed since 14 September 2026 for dry weather and reopens from 6 am on 16 October 2026. Reports of which visitor areas reopen do not use the same names: Newswire (13 October) reports Zones 1 and 2; the Daily Mirror (12 October) reports Zones 1 and 1A. Bungalow and campsite reservations open from 1 November. Our Yala National Park page has the permit steps. If you would rather see elephants with fewer jeeps, the Udawalawe vs Yala guide compares the two.
Want Hikkaduwa too? It is north-west of Galle on the coast line, so add it as the first night, before Galle, rather than doubling back. See Hikkaduwa.
How do you get from Colombo airport to the south coast?
By car on the expressways, or by expressway bus. The NTC table does not list a bus from the airport terminal, but it has buses from Negombo, the nearest town on its list, and from Colombo and Makumbura.
| Route (NTC number) | From | To | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| EX 1-33/270 | Negombo | Galle | Rs 1,370 |
| EX01/EX03 | Negombo | Matara | Rs 1,590 |
| EX 1 | Makumbura | Galle | Rs 930 |
| EX 1-1 | Makumbura | Matara | Rs 1,170 |
| EX 1-18 | Colombo | Matara | Rs 1,320 |
| EX 1-12/32 | Colombo | Kataragama | Rs 2,340 |
Source: NTC Expressway Full Fare table, effective 6 July 2026, re-checked 15 October 2026. Fares are full adult fares for luxury expressway buses. Timings are not in the table. We include Kataragama, near Yala, for anyone ending the 10 day route on the safari side.
For Mirissa and Weligama, take a Matara bus and finish with a short local ride back west. For Hiriketiya and Tangalle, continue east from Matara by road. The step-by-step version, with a taxi checklist, is in our Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide.
By train: the Coast Line runs from Colombo Fort along the sea via Galle and Matara to Beliatta. Sri Lanka Railways lists Colombo Fort to Beliatta among the routes you can reserve online (reservation FAQ). We did not verify train times or fares today, so check the official site for your date. The getting around guide explains how booking works.
When is the south coast in season?
The main season is December to February, with whale boats from November to April. October and November are the shoulder months.
| What | When | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Peak season on the south-west coast | December to February: clear skies, calm seas | Sri Lanka Tourism weather page |
| Sunny with a calm sea | November to March | Sri Lanka Tourism beach page |
| Navy whale cruises from Galle | November to April | Sri Lanka Navy |
| Best surf season at Weligama | November to April | Southern Sri Lanka, surfing |
| Second inter-monsoon | October to November: occasional heavy showers anywhere | Sri Lanka Tourism weather page |
| South-west monsoon | May to September: heavy rain on the south-west coast | Sri Lanka Tourism weather page |
Rain falls fast between October and December. The Department of Meteorology's 1991 to 2020 averages put October rain at 396.8 mm in Galle District, 339.1 mm in Matara and 188.7 mm in Hambantota (Tangalle's district). In December, they fall to 209.5 mm, 200.3 mm and 167.2 mm (Annex 1, October to December 2026 forecast). Travelling in October? Read Sri Lanka in October first.
How much does a south coast trip cost?
We list only prices we could read on an official or operator page on 15 October 2026. We did not sample hotels, so there are no room rates here.
| Item | Price | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Expressway bus, Colombo to Matara | Rs 1,320 | NTC table, effective 6 July 2026, checked 15 Oct 2026 |
| Navy whale cruise, foreign adult | US$80 (US$60 plus US$20 tax) | Navy schedule page, 15 Oct 2026; not sailing that day |
| Raja and the Whales, Mirissa | LKR 20,000 adult (12+), LKR 10,000 child (6 to 11) | Operator booking page, 15 Oct 2026 |
| Hiri Surf School group lesson, Hiriketiya | LKR 5,000 per guest (1 hour 15 minutes) | Operator site, 15 Oct 2026 |
| Weligama surf lesson | About US$15 to US$25 per 1 to 2 hour session | Southern Province tourist bureau page, undated, so treat it as a rough guide |
| Yala entry, foreign adult, daytime | US$25 in the tourist season, US$20 at other times, plus vehicle charges and taxes | Wildlife regulations (FAOLEX copy); we do not add a total |
For Yala, the regulations say all charges are "subject to the taxes and charges imposed" by law, and the DWC does not publish a single price list. Confirm the amount for your date in its ePermit portal or with your operator. Whale and surf trips depend on the sea; ask about refunds before you pay. For a wider budget, see the Sri Lanka trip cost guide.
Where should you stay in each town?
No hotel on this page is paid for or recommended. This is general area advice:
| Town | Stay if | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Galle | You want the walls and restaurants | Inside the fort, or Unawatuna for the beach. One night in the fort is the usual pick if you only have one. See the south coast guide for the town-by-town chooser. |
| Unawatuna | You want a reef-sheltered swim about 5 km from Galle Fort | Compare Unawatuna, Weligama and Mirissa in the table on the Unawatuna page. |
| Weligama | You will take beginner surf lessons every day | Dated lesson prices are on the Weligama page. |
| Mirissa | You want the beach town and the harbour for boats | Prices and the three-harbour table are on the Mirissa page. |
| Hiriketiya | You want to walk to a compact surf bay | Around the bay, or in Dickwella town for more space and shops. |
| Tangalle | You want quieter bays further east | Choose the exact bay, not just the town name, and check the swimming conditions for that bay. |
Swim only where locals do, follow flags and lifeguards, and treat each beach day as a fresh decision. The beaches guide explains what to check.
How does this fit a longer trip?
The south coast works as the beach end of a bigger route. Add it after the hill country, or after the Cultural Triangle in the one-week first-visit itinerary if you have more days. The how many days in Sri Lanka guide helps you decide how much time to give it. If you are torn between coasts, read east coast vs south coast, and check the whale watching guide before you lock in a boat day.
For more on individual stops, see Unawatuna, Weligama and Mirissa. For a slower week in one base, use the 7-day wellness itinerary.
Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for the south coast of Sri Lanka?
Yes. Seven days is enough for three bases: two nights in Galle, two in Mirissa with a Weligama surf day, and two in Hiriketiya. Add three more days if you also want Tangalle and a Yala safari.
What is the best order to visit the south coast towns?
Travel from west to east: Galle, then Weligama and Mirissa, then Hiriketiya at Dickwella, then Tangalle. The towns sit along one coast road, so going in one direction means you never backtrack.
Should you travel the south coast by train or car?
Both work. The Coast Line train from Colombo Fort runs via Galle and Matara to Beliatta, and Sri Lanka Railways lets you reserve Colombo Fort to Beliatta seats online. A car or tuk-tuk is easier between beach towns and for the bays the train does not reach.
When is whale watching season on the south coast?
The Sri Lanka Navy schedules its southern whale cruises from Galle from November to April. On 17 October 2026, whalewatching.navy.lk listed that seasonal calendar and did not state a maintenance pause; confirm sailings there before you book.
Is Hiriketiya good for beginner surfers?
Yes, on the right day. Hiri Surf School says all its beginner lessons stay in waist-deep, sandy parts of Hiriketiya Bay, with the coach next to you. Leave the reef to experienced surfers, and ask a coach about the day's swell before you paddle out.
Can you add Yala to a south coast itinerary?
Yes. On the 10 day route, stay in Tangalle and give Yala a full day. Visitor areas reopen from 6 am on 16 October 2026 after a dry-weather closure. Newswire reports Zones 1 and 2; the Daily Mirror reports Zones 1 and 1A. Confirm the entrance with your operator and the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
How do you get from Colombo airport to the south coast?
By car on the expressways, or by expressway bus. The National Transport Commission lists Negombo to Galle (EX 1-33/270) at Rs 1,370 and Negombo to Matara (EX01/EX03) at Rs 1,590, fares effective 6 July 2026 and re-checked on 15 October 2026.
Which town is the best base for a short south coast trip?
For two or three nights, pick one base. Galle suits heritage and food, Mirissa suits a busy beach and whale boats, and Hiriketiya suits a small surf bay. For five days, split the time between Galle and Mirissa.
