Colombo Airport to Bentota
Colombo airport to Bentota: about 107 km and 1 h 31 min with no traffic, the airport taxi counter's fixed fare card, bus 187 plus a Galle Road bus, the expressway route and what to ask the driver. Checked 27 October 2026.

How far is Colombo airport from Bentota?
Quick answer: Bentota is about 107 km from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). With no traffic that is around 1 hour 31 minutes by car, mostly on expressways. The airport's own taxi counter lists a fixed fare to Bentota, and the cheapest way is route 187 to Colombo Fort, then a Galle Road bus.
"Colombo airport" means BIA at Katunayake, north of Colombo, so you cross or skirt the whole capital before the south coast starts. Bentota is on the coast in Galle district (see our Bentota guide), and the airport arrival guide covers what happens before you reach the taxi counter.
| Road sample, checked 27 Oct 2026 | Distance | Time, no traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Bentota | 107.3 km | 1 h 31 min |
| Airport to Hikkaduwa, for comparison | 141.3 km | 1 h 57 min |
| Airport to Galle, for comparison | 152.8 km | 2 h 2 min |
Our day trips from Colombo guide lists Colombo itself to Bentota at 81 km and 1 hour 20 minutes, so the airport adds a long first leg on top.
What does the airport taxi to Bentota cost?
The airport's own counter publishes a fixed fare, and Bentota is on it. Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited, which supervises the airport taxi service, runs counters in the arrival lobby and at the arrival porch. Its taxi page lists a fare card by destination.
We have not sampled any ride-app or private driver price, so we do not quote one. If you book a driver by message, ask for the same three answers in writing and compare. Our getting around Sri Lanka guide explains why we do not publish a "standard" private price.
Which place name should you give the taxi counter?
Give the name of the town your hotel is in. The card prices each town separately, and the towns near Bentota do not follow a simple north to south order. These are the lines for the nearby coast, from the same card read on 27 October 2026, sorted from the lowest rate.
| Name on the card | Code | Air Conditioned Rate (SLR) |
|---|---|---|
| KALUTARA | K013 | Rs 16,740 |
| BERUWALA | B017 | Rs 19,872 |
| ALUTHGAMA | A008 | Rs 20,088 |
| BENTOTA | B016 | Rs 20,520 |
| KOSGODA | K039 | Rs 20,844 |
| BALAPITIYA | B005 | Rs 20,844 |
| INDURUWA | I002 | Rs 21,384 |
| AMBALANGODA | A009 | Rs 21,600 |
Two things stand out. First, Induruwa (Rs 21,384) costs more than Kosgoda (Rs 20,844) on the card, yet our Kosgoda guide places Induruwa between Bentota and Kosgoda, about 5 km from each. So do not assume that a town further along the road costs more, and read the line for your own stop. Second, Beruwala to Ambalangoda span only Rs 1,728 on this list (Rs 19,872 to Rs 21,600), so if your hotel is between two names, ask which one the counter will enter.
If your hotel's village is not on the card, tell the counter the nearest town and agree where the drop is, because the card adds Rs 130 for each extra kilometre.
Which road does the drive to Bentota take?
Mostly expressways. The OSRM sample route runs as follows. Road names and references are as OpenStreetMap labels them, and the exit sign is from the same map data, so confirm it with your driver.
| Leg of the OSRM route | Road | Approx. distance |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to the expressway | Local roads | 2 km |
| Colombo to Katunayake Expressway | E003 | 17 km |
| Outer Circular Highway | E002 | 27 km |
| Southern Expressway | E001 | 46 km |
| Off ramp signed for Aluthgama, then the last stretch to Bentota | B157 | 11 km |
The remaining kilometres are short links at the ends. Traffic on the Colombo links is not in this sample, so treat the time as a floor.
Who pays the toll? The fixed-fare card does not mention tolls. The RDA's expressway site says toll fees can be paid in cash at all expressways, card payment is offered to cardholders of Sri Lankan banks, and LankaQR apps also work. Visitors with foreign cards should carry rupees in cash in case the driver asks you to cover it. The expressway hotline printed on the RDA site is 1969.
We did not read the toll schedule itself, because the RDA's tariff is not published in text on the page we opened. Do not quote a toll amount to a driver as fact; ask for the figure.
Is there a bus from Colombo airport to Bentota?
Not a single bus that we could find, but two published fares add up to a usable plan. The NTC Inter Provincial list does have route 2/187 between Matara and Katunayake, the airport's town, at Rs 810 on a normal bus. It gives only the two end points, so we cannot confirm that it stops at Bentota, and we give no Bentota fare for it. The plan we can price is airport bus, then Galle Road bus.
| Leg | Fare | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Colombo Fort, route 187, air-conditioned, 24 hours a day, about 50 minutes | Rs 325 a person | airport.lk, 27 Oct 2026 |
| Colombo to Bentota, NTC route 2 (Colombo to Matara), stage 31, normal bus | Rs 292 | NTC normal fares, effective 6 July 2026 |
| Two fares added together | Rs 617 | Our sum, not a through ticket |
Route 187 boards at the Departure Terminal Outer Porch, and baggage over 23 kg costs another Rs 325. The airport also runs a Makumbura bus from the arrival outer porch at Rs 410, but we did not price Bentota that way because the NTC expressway list we read names no Bentota stop.
The NTC stage table for route 2 lists Bentota as stage 31, Aluthgama as stage 30 and Ambalangoda as stage 42. The fare for each stage is counted from Colombo, so 31 stages costs Rs 292. That is a normal-service fare. Air-conditioned and semi-luxury buses use other tables that we did not read for this page. The NTC lists no times and no stands, so we do not give a journey time for the Galle Road leg. A table with 31 fare stages before Bentota suggests many stops, so allow extra time and check at Colombo Fort where route 2 buses leave from.
What should you do in your first hour at the airport?
Fix the three taxi details first, then decide how to get moving. This is a short routine for a Bentota arrival, built from the airport's own pages.
- Clear immigration and baggage, using our arrival guide for the order of steps. We cannot say how long the queues take, so do not book a hotel check-in or a driver pickup to the minute.
- In the arrival lobby, buy a SIM or confirm your eSIM works so you can call the hotel or driver.
- At the taxi counter, give the town name, then ask: how many passengers, which vehicle, tolls included or not.
- Photograph the receipt or printed fare. If the driver proposes a stop, remember the card adds Rs 300 per extra drop.
- If you are taking the bus, walk to the Departure Terminal Outer Porch for route 187, and keep rupees for the Galle Road conductor.
Add the 1 hour 31 minutes from the OSRM sample to your own airport time. If you land after dark, think about whether you want a bus change at Colombo Fort at all.
Which option suits you?
| If you | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Land tired, travel with children, or carry heavy bags | Airport taxi to Bentota | One fixed-fare line on the card, no change in Colombo |
| Travel light and want the lowest cost | Route 187 then Galle Road bus | Rs 617 in two published fares, but a change in Colombo |
| Have a hotel outside Bentota town | Taxi, with the exact village named | The card lists separate rates for nearby towns |
| Want to stop on the way | Private driver, agreed in advance | The card charges Rs 300 per extra drop |
What is the weather like when you land?
Bentota's dry season runs from December to March, as our Bentota guide explains. For October and November arrivals, it cites WMO normals of 359.3 mm of rain in October and 345.8 mm in November for Colombo, the nearest station with data. Pack for rain, and ask your driver about road conditions on the day. Our south coast region guide shows how Bentota compares with the towns further down the coast.
What next after you arrive?
If you want a longer coast drive, Hikkaduwa and Galle continue on the same expressway, and our airport to Galle and Mirissa guide compares fares beyond Bentota. Stopping near Kalutara on the way is another option. Ambalangoda is about 24 km south of Bentota by road and is known for its carved masks.
Going further down the coast? Our Colombo airport to Hikkaduwa guide has the card fare and road sample for the next stop south.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Colombo airport from Bentota?
About 107 km by road, around 1 hour 31 minutes with no traffic, on the OpenStreetMap (OSRM) route we checked on 27 October 2026. Real journeys take longer in traffic, and the time does not include getting through the airport.
How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Bentota?
On the airport's own fixed-fare card as we read it on 27 October 2026, Bentota (code B016) was listed at Rs 20,520 on the Air Conditioned Rate (SLR) column. The card does not say how many passengers or what vehicle the rate covers, so confirm both at the counter. Extra kilometres were listed at Rs 130 each.

Not a direct one that we could find. The airport's route 187 bus goes to Colombo Fort for Rs 325 a person, and the National Transport Commission lists Bentota as stage 31 on route 2 (Colombo to Matara) at Rs 292 on a normal bus. That makes Rs 617 for the two fares added together, with a change in Colombo.

On the OSRM route we checked, about 91 of the 107 km are on expressways, leaving at the exit signed for Aluthgama and finishing on a local road. Which route your driver takes is the driver's call, so ask before you set off.
Which name should I give the airport taxi counter for Bentota?
Bentota is its own line on the card. Nearby towns such as Aluthgama, Beruwala, Induruwa and Kosgoda have separate lines with different rates, so give the counter the town your hotel is in.
