Colombo airport to Hikkaduwa: about 141 km and 1 h 57 min with no traffic, the airport taxi counter's fixed fare card, bus 187 plus a Galle Road bus, the expressway exit and how Hikkaduwa compares with Galle as a first night. Checked 27 October 2026.

How far is Colombo airport from Hikkaduwa?

Quick answer: Hikkaduwa is about 141 km from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), around 1 hour 57 minutes by car with no traffic. The airport's own taxi counter lists a fixed fare to Hikkaduwa. The cheapest plan is route 187 to Colombo Fort, then a normal Galle Road bus, which adds up to Rs 746 on two published fares.

"Colombo airport" means BIA at Katunayake, north of Colombo, so the whole drive runs the length of the west coast. Hikkaduwa is a south coast town associated with reef and surf activities, and our south coast region guide shows where it sits among the other beach towns.

What does the airport taxi to Hikkaduwa cost?

The airport's own counter publishes a fixed fare, and Hikkaduwa is on it. Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited supervises the airport taxi service and runs counters in the arrival lobby and at the arrival porch. Its taxi page lists a fare card by destination.

We did not sample ride-app or private driver prices, so we do not quote one. If you arrange a driver in advance, ask for the same three answers in writing. Our getting around Sri Lanka guide explains how to compare quotes without a standard price.

Is Hikkaduwa or Galle the better first night?

On price and drive time they are close, so choose by what you want to do. The card and the OSRM sample give a direct comparison with the next stops on the coast.

Hikkaduwa suits one particular kind of plan: choose the activity first. Our guide says dry weather alone does not prove safe swimming, surf or visibility, so read the Hikkaduwa Beach page, the surfing guide and the diving and snorkelling guide before you commit to a booking.

Which road does the drive to Hikkaduwa take?

Almost entirely expressways, then about 13 km on local roads. The OSRM sample route is below. Road names and references are as OpenStreetMap labels them, and the exit sign comes from the same map data, so confirm it with your driver.

Southern ExpresswayE00180 km

That is about 125 of the 141 km on expressways. Our airport to Galle and Mirissa guide says that, for getting to Hikkaduwa without a car, the coast line or coast road from Colombo is usually more direct than the expressway. A car is a different question, because a driver can stay on the expressway all the way to the exit. Ask the driver which exit they plan to use.

Who pays the toll? The fixed-fare card does not mention tolls. The RDA's expressway site says toll fees can be paid in cash at all expressways, card payment is offered to cardholders of Sri Lankan banks, and LankaQR apps also work. Carry rupees in cash in case you are asked to pay. The RDA's tariff is not published as text on the page we opened, so we quote no toll amount. The expressway hotline printed on the RDA site is 1969.

Is there a bus from Colombo airport to Hikkaduwa?

Not a single bus that we could find, but two published fares add up to a usable plan. The NTC Inter Provincial list does have route 2/187 between Matara and Katunayake, the airport's town, at Rs 810 on a normal bus. It gives only the two end points, so we cannot confirm that it stops at Hikkaduwa, and we give no Hikkaduwa fare for it. The plan we can price is airport bus, then Galle Road bus.

Route 187 boards at the Departure Terminal Outer Porch, and baggage over 23 kg costs another Rs 325. The route 2 stage table counts from Colombo: Ambalangoda is stage 42 (Rs 376), Seenigama is stage 47 (Rs 413), Hikkaduwa is stage 48 (Rs 421) and Narigama is stage 49 (Rs 428). The stages next to Hikkaduwa cost only Rs 7 to Rs 8 apart, so ask the conductor which stop is nearest your hotel and tell them early. These are normal-service fares. Air-conditioned and semi-luxury buses use other tables that we did not read for this page.

The NTC's expressway list has no Hikkaduwa end point. The nearest named ones are Ambalangoda to Colombo (route EX 1-41, Rs 890) and Galle to Makumbura (route EX 1, Rs 930), and the list gives no stops or times. The airport also runs a Makumbura bus from the arrival outer porch at Rs 410. We did not price Hikkaduwa that way, because Galle is past Hikkaduwa and we cannot confirm a drop at the Hikkaduwa exit. We found no published time for the Galle Road leg, so check at Colombo Fort where route 2 buses leave from.

What if you want to stop in Ambalangoda?

It is an easy add-on if you plan it at the counter. Our Ambalangoda guide puts the town about 13 km north of Hikkaduwa, around 14 minutes by road with no traffic, and calls it the place to see carved wooden masks. For a taxi, this is an extra drop on the airport card, at Rs 300 for each extra drop within the agreed journey. Agree the stop, the waiting time and the total before you get in, and write it down.

What should you do in your first hour at the airport?

  1. Clear immigration and baggage, using our arrival guide for the order of steps. We cannot say how long the queues take, so do not tie a driver or check-in to the minute.
  2. In the arrival lobby, buy a SIM or confirm your eSIM works so you can call the hotel or driver.
  3. At the taxi counter, say "Hikkaduwa", then ask: how many passengers, which vehicle, tolls included or not.
  4. Keep the receipt. If you plan a stop, say so now.
  5. If you are taking the bus, walk to the Departure Terminal Outer Porch for route 187 and keep small rupee notes for the Galle Road conductor.

Add the 1 hour 57 minutes from the OSRM sample to your own airport time.

On the airport's own fixed-fare card as we read it on 27 October 2026, Hikkaduwa (code H015) was listed at Rs 22,788 on the Air Conditioned Rate (SLR) column. The card does not say how many passengers or what vehicle the rate covers, or whether tolls are included, so ask at the counter.

Not a direct one that we could find. The airport's route 187 bus goes to Colombo Fort for Rs 325 a person. The National Transport Commission lists Hikkaduwa as stage 48 on route 2 (Colombo to Matara) at Rs 421 on a normal bus, so the two fares add up to Rs 746 with a change in Colombo.

On the OSRM route we checked, the car leaves the Southern Expressway at a ramp the map data signs for Hikkaduwa and Baddegama, then drives about 13 km on local roads. This comes from map data, not from an official RDA list, so confirm the exit with your driver.

Should I stay in Hikkaduwa or Galle for my first night?

The card puts Galle only Rs 540 above Hikkaduwa, and the OSRM sample adds about 11.5 km and 5 minutes. So price is not the deciding factor. Choose Hikkaduwa for reef or surf plans and Galle for the fort and its heritage, then check marine conditions first.

Yes. Ambalangoda is about 13 km north of Hikkaduwa on the coast road, according to our Ambalangoda guide. The airport's fare card adds Rs 300 for each extra drop, so agree the stop and what it costs before you leave the counter.

The fare card does not say whether tolls are included, so ask when you book. The Road Development Authority says manual toll booths take cash, and card payment is offered to cardholders of Sri Lankan banks.
