Bentota

A river-mouth beach town about 61 km south of Colombo Fort by rail, ranked 9th in Condé Nast Traveller's 2026 best beaches in Asia. Train fares, the Lunuganga garden tour price and when to go, checked 17 October 2026.

Is Bentota worth visiting?

Yes, if you want an easy, quiet beach close to the airport. Bentota sits where the Bentota river meets the sea, about 61 km south of Colombo Fort by rail. In Condé Nast Traveller's 2026 Readers' Choice Awards it was voted the 9th best beach in Asia, with a score of 88.33 (Condé Nast Traveller, best beaches 2026). Go from December to March, and pick it for a first or last beach night rather than for surf or whales.

Bentota is the closest south coast beach to Colombo; the south coast region guide helps you choose between the towns further down the coast. Further south, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Ahangama and Mirissa follow on the same railway line.

How do you get from Colombo to Bentota?

The train is the cheapest way. Coast line trains from Colombo Fort stop at Aluthgama and Bentota. Sri Lanka Railways' fare table, checked on 17 October 2026, lists these fares from Colombo Fort (Sri Lanka Railways fare PDF). The PDF has no printed effective date, so check at the counter.

Not every train stops at every station, so check that your train stops at Bentota or at Aluthgama, the next station north (1.3 km closer to Colombo on the fare table). From either station, use a ride app or agree the tuk-tuk price before you get in.

From the airport, most visitors take a car with a driver along the Southern Expressway. The Colombo airport to Galle and Mirissa guide explains the expressway route, the rail option via Colombo Fort, and how to compare driver quotes. Bentota is on the way, so the same advice applies.

Flying in? The direct flights to Sri Lanka guide lists nonstop routes to Colombo. Sort your ETA with the Sri Lanka visa guide and your data with the Sri Lanka eSIM guide before you land.

When is the best time to visit Bentota?

December to March. Sri Lanka Tourism calls December to February the peak season on the south-west coast, with clear skies and calm seas (Sri Lanka Tourism weather page). There is no Met Department station in Bentota itself, so the table uses the two nearest coastal stations either side of it.

What is there to do in Bentota?

Bentota is a slow place. The best days mix the beach, the river and one garden visit.

Visit Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's garden

Lunuganga was the country garden of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's best-known architect. The Trust describes about twenty-five acres surrounded by lakes, and the name means "Salt River" in Sinhala. It can be seen only on a guided tour. The Geoffrey Bawa Trust's own page, checked on 17 October 2026, lists (Geoffrey Bawa Trust, Lunuganga):

TourTimesPriceNotes
Public garden tourDaily 11:00, 14:00, 15:00USD 20 foreign; LKR 3,500 resident; LKR 750 local studentAbout 90 minutes; no booking needed; under 7s free
Private guided tourBy appointmentUSD 50 nett per person (max 10)Book about two weeks ahead
Trust curatorial tourBy appointmentUSD 325 for up to 4 peopleExtra people USD 35 each, up to 25

Payment is by cash or card, in USD or LKR. At the Central Bank's buying rate on 16 October 2026, USD 20 is about LKR 6,533, GBP 15.10, EUR 17.90 or JPY 3,170. The Trust says third-party guides may not run tours, so book with the Trust, not a tout.

Plan for the access road and the slopes. The Trust says the garden is "tucked away behind a steep dirt road" and has steps, steep inclines, uneven surfaces and very few handrails. Wear good shoes and arrive a little before the tour time.

Spend time on the river

The photo on this page shows the Bentota estuary, where the river meets the sea. Boat trips are offered on the river, but we found no operator with a published, dated price on its own site. Agree the length of the trip and the price before you board, and ask for life jackets.

Use Bentota as a first or last beach stop

Because Bentota is close to Colombo, it works well for the first night after a long flight or the last night before one. A typical route: land, drive to Bentota, rest for a day, then head inland to Dambulla and Sigiriya, or continue south to Galle and Mirissa. The two-week Sri Lanka itinerary and the 10-day classic itinerary both list Bentota as an optional first or last night.

The two beaches that top the award list are on opposite coasts with opposite seasons. You cannot do both well on one trip unless you travel in a shoulder month. In January, pick Bentota; in July, pick Arugam Bay.

Is Bentota safe for swimming?

It can be calm in the dry season, but it is open sea, and conditions change by day and by stretch of beach. Swim where lifeguards are on duty, follow the flags, and stay out of the water from May to September, when the south-west monsoon makes the sea rough. Never swim at the river mouth. For wider safety advice, including scams and road safety, see is Sri Lanka safe.

Where should you stay in Bentota?

Bentota has large resort hotels along the beach, smaller villas along the river and guesthouses near the station. We did not sample room prices for this page, because the hotels we checked on 17 October 2026 showed prices only after you enter dates in a booking engine, not as a fixed rate on their own page. We will add dated samples when we can read them on a property's own site.

What to check before you book:

  1. Beach side or river side. Beach-side rooms are for swimming; river-side stays are quieter.
  2. Distance to the station if you plan to use the train.
  3. Christmas and New Year rules. Some resorts add a compulsory gala dinner for 24 or 31 December. See the December guide for real examples.
  4. Cancellation terms in case of rain or flight changes.

How long should you stay in Bentota?

One or two nights suits most trips. Stay one night if Bentota is your first stop after landing. Stay two if you want a full beach day and the Lunuganga tour. If you want surf lessons, move on to Ahangama or Weligama, where lessons run from about LKR 5,000 in a group.
