Galle is the classic day trip. The road is about 126 km, and most of it is on the Southern Expressway, which is why it takes about the same time as Kandy despite being further.

  • Bus: NTC route 2-1 Colombo to Galle is Rs 496 on a normal bus and Rs 970 air-conditioned. The expressway bus EX 1 from Makumbura to Galle is Rs 930.
  • What to pay: walking the walls of Galle Fort is free. The CCF lists the Galle museum at USD 6 (LKR 2,016).
  • Train: our Colombo to Galle train guide has fares checked on 23 October 2026. Check times at the station, as the railway site was down on 24 October 2026.

Stop at Bentota or Hikkaduwa on the way back if you want a swim. Both are on the same coast road.

Can I see Kandy in a day from Colombo?

You can see the main sights: the Temple of the Tooth and the lake. The CCF tickets page lists the Temple of the Tooth as open from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. The temple's own website did not load on 24 October 2026, so we have not given its ticket price.

  • Bus: NTC route 1 is Rs 521 on a normal bus and Rs 1,018 air-conditioned. The expressway service (EX03/EX04/602) is Rs 1,230.
  • Road: about 115 km, 2 hours 12 minutes with no traffic.
  • Combine with Pinnawala: Kandy to Pinnawala is about 40 km, 48 minutes. Doing both in one day means about 5 hours of driving.

If you have more time, stay a night. Our Kandy guide has the rest of the city.

Which day trips are too far?

Some places are sold as day trips but spend most of the day on the road:

PlaceRoad from Colombo FortWhy not as a day trip
Sigiriya168 km, 3 h 01 min6 hours of driving for one climb
EllaOver 200 kmMountain roads, plan 2 nights
Jaffna399 km, 7 h 15 minNeeds at least 2 nights

For Sigiriya, see our Colombo airport to Sigiriya guide. For a short trip from Colombo with a night away, our 3-day itinerary is a good fit.

What about Sinharaja and Kitulgala?

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is one of Sri Lanka's eight UNESCO World Heritage properties. The Kudawa side is about 122 km and 2 hours 20 minutes from Colombo Fort with no traffic. That makes a long day with a short forest walk. Go with a licensed guide and start early.

Kitulgala is about 87 km and 1 hour 45 minutes away on the road towards the hill country. It is known for river rafting. We did not find official bus fares for these two on 24 October 2026, so a car and driver is the simpler option.

What is the weather like for day trips?

Colombo's wettest months are October and November, with 359 mm and 346 mm of rain on average, on World Meteorological Organization normals for 1991 to 2020. January and February are the driest, with about 80 mm. Rain usually comes in the afternoon, so start early and plan indoor stops, such as the Galle museum or the Temple of the Tooth.

Tips for a smooth day trip

  • Leave Colombo before 7.00 am to beat the morning traffic.
  • Carry rupees. CCF and Pinnawala prices are in dollars but paid in rupees.
  • Check closing times. CCF counters close at 5.00 pm.
  • Use our getting around Sri Lanka guide to compare car, bus and train.
  • See all entry prices on our Sri Lanka entry ticket prices page.

Two zoo day trips, checked 26 October 2026: Dehiwala Zoo is about 11 km from Colombo Fort, and the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is about 88 km. Short city hops are by tuk-tuk; see the tuk-tuk fares guide.
